"JFK’s Rural Development Legacy" | Daily Yonder - Keep It Rural | 11/13/13 | FDW's Daily Scoops | Scoop.it

On the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy's death, Americans are more likely to associate JFK with top hats and "Camelot" than with rural development. But during his short term in office, Kennedy proposed new approaches to rural policy that had domestic and international implications.

Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

.....and now we know how Rural Development got into the Department of Agriculture and why us rural folk love these three Presidents.  It was Ike initiated, Jack championed and LBJ implemented  change for Rural America!

The Complex Ion Tail of Comet Lovejoy
Image Credit & Copyright: Velimir Popov & Emil Ivanov (IRIDA Observatory)

Explanation: What causes the structure in Comet Lovejoy's tail? Comet C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy), which is currently at naked-eye brightness and near its brightest, has been showing an exquisitely detailed ion tail. As the name implies, the ion tail is made of ionized gas -- gas energized by ultraviolet light from the Sun and pushed outward by the solar wind. The solar wind is quite structured and sculpted by the Sun's complex and ever changing magnetic field. The effect of the variable solar wind combined with different gas jets venting from the comet's nucleus accounts for the tail's complex structure. Following the wind, structure in Comet Lovejoy's tail can be seen to move outward from the Sun even alter its wavy appearance over time. The blue color of the ion tail is dominated by recombining carbon monoxide molecules, while the green color of the coma surrounding the head of the comet is created mostly by a slight amount of recombining diatomic carbon molecules. The featured three-panel mosaic image was taken nine days ago from the IRIDA Observatory in Bulgaria. Comet Lovejoy made it closest pass to the Earth two weeks ago and will be at its closest to the Sun in about ten days. After that, the comet will fade as it heads back into the outer Solar System, to return only in about 8,000 years.

Published on Jan 15, 2015

This year marks the 30th Anniversary and celebration of the birthday of Dr, Martin Luther King, Jr. as a National Holiday (and 15 years since it was recognized nationally by all the States). In these current times of political unrest, social injustice and senseless violence throughout the world, we felt impelled to offer something special to honor his incredible life. His many poignant messages have touched and inspired us as artists, none which are more timely than his staunch beliefs in the power of love and non-violent civil protest. We dedicate our song and video, "Give Love" to his legacy and our belief in love of self, family, children, country, culture, history, truth, freedom, justice, equality, nature and most importantly, love of God and all things spiritual. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, "I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear." Amen. -SWEET HONEY IN THE ROCK

"11 Black American Icons You Won't Hear About On MLK Jr. Day — But Should" | Mic | 01/18/15 | FDW's Daily Scoops | Scoop.it
  • They all deserve their own holiday.  One day, just like one month, isn't nearly enough.  If the Black Lives Matter movement has taught us anything these past couple of months, it's that every black life matters. But more than that, it's proven that a single voice can never truly be representative of an entire moment. One federal holiday and one month celebrating black heritage, culture and activism is pithy at best, insulting at worst..

President Obama: End discriminatory, violent policing & its unjust consequences | Color Of Change | 01/17/15

President Obama: End discriminatory, violent policing & its unjust consequences | Color Of Change | 01/17/15 | FDW's Daily Scoops | Scoop.it

There is an epidemic of racial bias, police violence, and a lack of accountability in our country's police forces.Thousands have been killed. Millions more have been sucked into the criminal justice system by racially-biased practices — stripped of their rights and unable to gain employment because of discrimination.

The federal government could, at the direction of President Obama, completely change these conditions — but it's not happening yet and won't happen unless we raise our voices.

Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

...We are in a historic time — amidst the rise of a new and growing civil rights movement. And in the long and noble tradition of civil disobedience, Black youth and their allies are once again rising up and demanding an end to police killings. In the words of the incredible Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., "This is no time for apathy and complacency, this is a time for vigorous and positive action."

"Infrared Orion from WISE" | Astronomy Picture of the Day | 2015 January 19 | FDW's Daily Scoops | Scoop.it
Infrared Orion from WISE
Image Credit: WISE, IRSA, NASA; Processing & Copyright : Francesco Antonucci

Explanation: The Great Nebula in Orion is an intriguing place. Visible to the unaided eye, it appears as a small fuzzy patch in the constellation of Orion. But this image, an illusory-color four-panel mosaic taken in different bands of infrared light with the Earth orbiting WISE observatory, shows the Orion Nebula to be a bustling neighborhood or recently formed stars, hot gas, and dark dust. The power behind much of the Orion Nebula (M42) is the stars of the Trapezium star cluster, seen near the center of the above wide field image. The orange glow surrounding the bright stars pictured here is their own starlight reflected by intricate dust filaments that cover much of the region. The current Orion Nebula cloud complex, which includes the Horsehead Nebula, will slowly disperse over the next 100,000 years.

Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

.....it will only take a mere 100,000 years for the dust clouds to disperse.  We humans are such an insignificant part of the Universe and the natural order of things!
