"John McCown - 1970" | Sparta Georgia Hancock County GA YouTube Channel | 01/10/15

BACKGROUND: John McCown was a black civil rights worker who achieved great political power . In 1968, Georgia’s Hancock County became the first county in the United States since Reconstruction to come under black political control, in large part because of the charismatic leadership of McCown, who secured millions in grants from the Office of Economic Opportunity and the Ford Foundation.

In the early 1970's, Hancock County's high unemployment rate and lack of skilled labor had many striving for help in creating a new standard of living. The East Central Committee for Opportunity (E.C.C.O.), under the direction and leadership of John McCown, acquired millions of dollars of funding to boost economic development for the under-privileged in Hancock County. His economic vision included the
training of unskilled workers through various businesses that included the operation of a concrete block plant and the crown jewel, the Mayfield Catfish Farm. During construction in 1971 it was said to be “one of
the largest and most scientific catfish farms in the world” as reported by Time magazine.

Facilities were constructed using concrete block created in the E.C.C.O. plant by unskilled black laborers after being trained to operate construction equipment as required by E.C.C.O.'s McCown. In the
1971 Time magazine article referenced above, McCown is quoted as saying "We're going to reverse the pattern of rural migration. . . . . You've got to decide whether you want someone else telling you what to do, or whether you want to grab a corner of the land and make a piece of history for yourself."

John McCown’s vision was growing jobs and improving a weak economy, however his untimely death in an airplane crash in 1976 brought an end to the funds and dreams of economic prosperity for Mayfield and Hancock County, Georgia.

Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

......My Godfather, Dr. K. Z. Chavis, was one of the Ford Foundation Officials that worked with Mr. McCown.  On one of our trips from North Carolina to Atlanta, GA, I remember stopping i Hancock County.   Over the past 25 years, I have reconnected with many of the people from earlier Movement and continued the economic empowerment work in Hancock.

Explanation: This is the mess that is left when a star explodes. The Crab Nebula, the result of a supernova seen in 1054 AD, is filled with mysterious filaments. The filaments are not only tremendously complex, but appear to have less mass than expelled in the original supernova and a higher speed than expected from a free explosion. The featured image, taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, is presented in three colors chosen for scientific interest. The Crab Nebula spans about 10 light-years. In the nebula's very center lies a pulsar: a neutron star as massive as the Sun but with only the size of a small town. The Crab Pulsar rotates about 30 times each second.

Explanation: Dusty debris from periodic Comet Swift-Tuttle was swept up by planet Earth this week. Vaporized by their passage through the dense atmosphere at 59 kilometers per second, the tiny grains produced a stream of Perseid meteors. A bright, colorful Perseid meteor flash was captured during this 20 second exposure. It made its ephemeral appearance after midnight on August 12, in the moonless skies over the broad granite dome of Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, central Texas, USA. Below the Perseid meteor, trees stand in silhouette against scattered lights along the horizon and the faint Milky Way, itself cut by dark clouds of interstellar dust.

Explanation: Have you ever seen a halo around the Moon? Such 22 degree rings around the Moon -- caused by ice crystals falling in the Earth's atmosphere -- are somewhat rare. OK, but have you ever seen a blue moon? Given the modern definition of blue moon -- the second full moon occurring in a calendar month -- these are also rare. What is featured above might therefore be considered doubly rare -- a halo surrounding a blue moon. The featured image was taken late last month near Zhongshan Station in Antarctica. Visible in the foreground are a power generating house and a snowmobile. What might seem to be stars in the background are actually illuminated snowflakes near the camera.

"The Murders Not Deemed Newsworthy" | Politico Magazine | 08/09/15 | FDW's Daily Scoops | Scoop.it

"When Michael Brown was killed in Ferguson a year ago, journalists from around the world beat a path to that troubled, rioting community to report on a deep, enduring racial divide in America.

If only they’d been paying attention all along.

It is a no-brainer for the media to step inside the black community to cover a shocking event like Ferguson. Harder to tell are the stories of the kids gunned down on the streets of our cities, where murder has become too mundane to be deemed newsworthy—but is no less heartbreaking than police brutality, and just as worthy of our understanding."

"Full Earth, Full Moon" | Astronomy Picture of the Day | 2015 August 7 | FDW's Daily Scoops | Scoop.it
Full Moon, Full Earth

Explanation: The Moon was new on July 16. Its familiar nearside facing the surface of planet Earth was in shadow. But on that date a million miles away, the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) spacecraft's Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) captured this view of an apparently Full Moon crossing in front of a Full Earth. In fact, seen from the spacecraft's position beyond the Moon's orbit and between Earth and Sun, the fully illuminated lunar hemisphere is the less familiar farside. Only known since the dawn of the space age, the farside is mostly devoid of dark lunar maria that sprawl across the Moon's perpetual Earth-facing hemisphere. Only the small dark spot of the farside's Mare Moscoviense (Sea of Moscow) is clear, at the upper left. Planet Earth's north pole is near 11 o'clock, with the North America visited by Hurricane Dolores near center. Slight color shifts are visible around the lunar edge, an artifact of the Moon's motion through the field caused by combining the camera's separate exposures taken in quick succession through different color filters. While monitoring the Earth and solar wind for space weather forcasts, about twice a year DSCOVR can capture similar images of Moon and Earth together as it crosses the orbital plane of the Moon.

Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

.....a great way to see the Earth and Moon in proportion to each other.

Statement by the President on the Passing of Louis Stokes

Michelle and I were saddened to learn of the passing of former Congressman Louis Stokes. As a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus and the first African-American to represent the state of Ohio in Congress, Lou believed deeply in fairness and the idea that every American should have the same opportunity to succeed.  Growing up in Depression-era Cleveland with his mother and brother Carl, Lou triumphed over hardship to become a passionate voice for those less fortunate. He fought to expand access to quality healthcare in struggling communities and worked tirelessly on behalf of hardworking Ohioans. Lou leaves behind an indelible legacy in the countless generations of young leaders that he inspired, and he will be sorely missed. Michelle and I send our condolences to his wife Jay and the family and friends who loved him so dearly.

Explanation: Tonight the Perseid Meteor Shower reaches its maximum. Grains of icy rock will streak across the sky as they evaporate during entry into Earth's atmosphere. These grains were shed from Comet Swift-Tuttle. The Perseids result from the annual crossing of the Earth through Comet Swift-Tuttle's orbit, and are typically the most active meteor shower of the year. Although it is hard to predict the level of activity in any meteor shower, in a clear dark sky an observer might see a meteor a minute. This year's Perseids occur just before a new Moon and so the relatively dark sky should make even faint meteors visible. Meteor showers in general are best be seen from a relaxing position, away from lights. Featured here is a meteor caught exploding two weeks ago above Austria next to the central band of our Milky Way Galaxy.

A Sagittarius Triplet

Explanation: These three bright nebulae are often featured in telescopic tours of the constellation Sagittarius and the crowded starfields of the central Milky Way. In fact, 18th century cosmic tourist Charles Messier cataloged two of them; M8, the large nebula left of center, and colorful M20 on the right. The third, NGC 6559, is above M8, separated from the larger nebula by a dark dust lane. All three are stellar nurseries about five thousand light-years or so distant. The expansive M8, over a hundred light-years across, is also known as the Lagoon Nebula. M20's popular moniker is the Trifid. Glowing hydrogen gas creates the dominant red color of the emission nebulae, with contrasting blue hues, most striking in the Trifid, due to dust reflected starlight. The colorful skyscape recorded with telescope and digital camera also includes one of Messier's open star clusters, M21, just above the Trifid.

HCG 87: A Small Group of Galaxies
Image Credit: GMOS-S Commissioning Team, Gemini Observatory

Explanation: Sometimes galaxies form groups. For example, our own Milky Way Galaxy is part of the Local Group of Galaxies. Small, compact groups, like Hickson Compact Group 87 (HCG 87) shown above, are interesting partly because they slowly self-destruct. Indeed, the galaxies of HCG 87 are gravitationally stretching each other during their 100-million year orbits around a common center. The pulling creates colliding gas that causes bright bursts of star formation and feeds matter into their active galaxy centers. HCG 87 is composed of a large edge-on spiral galaxy visible near the image center, an elliptical galaxy visible to its right, and a spiral galaxy visible near the top. The small spiral near the center might be far in the distance. Several stars from our Galaxy are also visible in the foreground. Studying groups like HCG 87 allows insight into how all galaxies form and evolve.
