Manufacturing Case Study: Global Manufacturer Goes the Extra Mile to Reshore

Manufacturing Case Study: Global Manufacturer Goes the Extra Mile to Reshore | A Potpourri of Technology, Manufacturing and Personal Interests | Scoop.it
Reshoring, or bringing production operations back to the United States, has been a growing trend in manufacturing in recent years. Engineering Specialties Inc. (ESI) experienced this movement firsthand when Ametek, a global electronics manufacturer, decided to contact ESI after outsourcing its metal stamping operations to Mexico. Ametek had originally selected ESI as the metal stamper for its solenoid switch for trucks, designed to switch loads in DC motor circuits. The steel, zinc-plated part required tolerances as tight as .005” and Ametek required quantities of 100,000 per . . .

Are you taking into consideration all the factors? Or just the "PRICE" ??   YOUR TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP MAY BE MORE THAN YOU THINK.

Larry Heuser's insight:

Total Cost of Ownership Estimator®

Most companies make sourcing decisions based solely on price, oftentimes resulting in a 20 to 30 percent miscalculation of actual offshoring costs. The Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Estimator is a free online tool that helps companies account for all relevant factors — overhead, balance sheet, risks, corporate strategy and other external and internal business considerations — to determine the true total cost of ownership. Using this information, companies can better evaluate sourcing, identify alternatives and even make a case when selling against offshore competitors.

Maths anxiety is creating a shortage of young scientists ... here's a solution | A Potpourri of Technology, Manufacturing and Personal Interests | Scoop.it
Does the thought of doing long division, or solving a bit of algebra give you the shivers? You’re likely to have maths anxiety. In our recent research, my colleagues and I found that in 80% of countries, girls have more negative feelings towards maths than boys.

But this higher level of maths anxiety in girls is not justified by their actual level of performance and may put them off continuing a career in maths-related subjects, such as physics and computer science.

High school students given leg up on careers in landscaping

High school students given leg up on careers in landscaping | A Potpourri of Technology, Manufacturing and Personal Interests | Scoop.it
How many students grow up wanting to be landscapers? Probably not that many, but thanks to programs like Portage Lakes Career Center (PLCC), this lack of interest is starting to change. PLCC is a vocational school in Uniontown, Ohio, that offers a number of programs to high school students, including its Plant, Landscape and Turf […]
Larry Heuser's insight:

Looking Outside the Box: For the landscaping industry, the search for young workers has – and continues to be – a challenge for most companies. Inaccurate perceptions about the industry – for example, that it is a field that requires little knowledge and lots of manual labor – prevents many students from seeing its value.

Let Tinkerbell Tinker - Craftsmanship Magazine

Let Tinkerbell Tinker - Craftsmanship Magazine | A Potpourri of Technology, Manufacturing and Personal Interests | Scoop.it
As the economy’s reliance on innovation grows, the commercial offerings of toys for girls remains, well, somewhat less than innovative. Fortunately, a few women who are educators, engineers, and entrepreneurs are starting to figure this problem out by reviving the time-honored principles of tinkering. But how could we have gotten so off track? One writer goes searching for the answer.
Larry Heuser's insight:

Given the crisis in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) education for girls, the paucity of women in technical fields, and an innovation economy that needs 1.7 million new engineers and computer scientists in the next decade just to stay competitive, you’d think that some sort of Tinkerbell Tool Belt would be sweeping the nation.

Fixing The Manufacturing Skills Gap All Comes Down To Training | A Potpourri of Technology, Manufacturing and Personal Interests | Scoop.it
Larry Heuser's insight:

Fostering a culture of learning with strong on-the-job education and training will help:

  • ensure proper use of equipment in warehouses and factories;
  • increase company productivity by accelerating the ability to gain and share knowledge and skills;
  • retain top talent.

Ignore investing in skills-building and run the risk of driving top performers to move on, leaving you with underperformers who hurt company goals.

Nearly 53 percent of employees surveyed in the Bridge study indicated they would be likely or very likely to leave their job due to insufficient or ineffective opportunities for growth and learning.

The Manufacturing Rebirth

The Manufacturing Rebirth | A Potpourri of Technology, Manufacturing and Personal Interests | Scoop.it

Reshoring is more than a buzzword as it continues to gain momentum through 2016, counterbalancing the trade deficit.

Larry Heuser's insight:

The reshoring phenomenon seems to have stemmed from a multiplicity of factors, right from soaring labor costs in China and other places to the upgrading of the high-tech manufacturing base. It also includes reattaining a competitive edge and boosting innovation. It’s not just low skill jobs that are coming back, but also those where advanced manufacturing technical skills are required. It includes aerospace, automobiles and medical devices and industrial and energy equipments industries.

Today, Chinese laborers get $4 to $5 an hour. Added to the troubles with doing business overseas — constant miscommunications, difficulty supervising production, cultural resistance to innovation,  frequent labor turnover, poor results, t returns, long-distance shipping costs (and the carbon emissions that result), delayed deliveries to an ever-changing market, downside of minimal regulation overseas, political instability, and the negative publicity that offshoring generates — a new local factory starts to look pretty good.
