Steven Mallach's curator insight, April 30, 2013 11:00 PM

Trend watching is not only fun, it's one of the areas that every copywriter should keep an eye on.

Trends are ideal topics to give your content some snap. Topical issues and interest areas are also shared more often (obvioulsy).

So if you create content either for yourself, or for a client make sure that you have weekly recommendations for inclusion in their owned channel (blog / website) and their shared channels (social media).

There are plenty of great trend tracking software applications on the web, many of them free. Make use of them.

Keep an eye out for trends which are directly and indirectly related to client services and products and leverage this knowledge. Remember the sign of a great copywriter is to be able to apply knowledge laterally. The topic may not be directly related to everyday client activities, but will the audience find the trend interesting?

Remember to keep your copy light, humor never hurt either.

Twitter still struggling to grow as rivals race ahead

Twitter still struggling to grow as rivals race ahead | Business Video Directory | Scoop.it
The 10-year-old company's second-quarter report, released Tuesday, provided another sobering snapshot of Twitter stuck on a treadmill, as other digital communications channels such as Facebook and Snapchat are racing ahead in the battle for people's attention and allegiance. Dorsey has tried to shake things up by rolling out a "Moments" feature that bundles messages about current events, loosening the 140-character on tweets and showing tweets in the order most likely to appeal to each person's perceived interests, rather than a chronological fashion. Industry analysts believe the prospect of a Twitter takeover is the main reason that the company's stock had climbed 34 percent from its all-time low of $13.73 leading into the second-quarter earnings report. Years of stagnation finally prodded internet pioneer Yahoo Inc. to conduct an auction that resulted in Monday's $4.8 billion deal to sell its online operation to phone company Verizon. By comparison, online social networking leader Facebook is expected to boast a 33 percent increase in its quarterly revenue when it releases its numbers Wednesday.
