Australia: Losing 'know-how' economy?

Australia: Losing 'know-how' economy? | Business Updates | Scoop.it

"For the workers at Ford and their families absorbing this difficult news today, we will make sure that you are not left behind."

So tweeted the Australian premier Julia Gillard, as Ford Australia, the local subsidiary of the U.S. giant, this week confirmed the worst kept secret in Australian manufacturing.

More than 1,000 workers will lose their jobs when Ford closes two production facilities in the state of Victoria by October 2016.

15 Startups Leading The Hardware Revolution

15 Startups Leading The Hardware Revolution | Business Updates | Scoop.it

New hardware companies are one of the hottest trends in the startup world. Instead of building apps and Web services, companies are building real physical hardware that you can buy and use.

A lot of these find life on the crowdfunding site Kickstarter, where the community votes with its wallet on what gadget they want to use. Most notably, there's Pebble, a company that makes smartwatches, and Ouya, a company that makes an Android-based video console. Both companies have raised millions in regular VC money after seeing success on Kickstarter.

Yahoo's Mayer: we're committed to monetizing Tumblr | Business Updates | Scoop.it

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer held a press conference today to flesh out more details about its $1.1 billion acquisition of blog platform Tumblr, which was confirmed yesterday after days of rumors.

But the biggest thing Mayer touched on was Yahoo’s commitment to monetizing Tumblr, which is something the blog platform struggled with as it grew. Mayer highlighted that she would bring the company’s newly launched streaming ads product to the site, which are now featured on both Yahoo’s homepage and its newsfeed. Not only that but Yahoo’s commitment means hiring new engineers and ad sales people to boost revenue from Tumblr.

Is Gamification Just a Fad?

Is Gamification Just a Fad? | Business Updates | Scoop.it
For those unfamiliar, gamification has little to do with game design.

A term called gamification has taken UX by storm over the past few years, a trend likely spurred by Foursquare's success with badges. Whether they understand it or not, app designers desire to create a gamified experience, a supposedly sure route to the elusive engagement that makes free apps valuable. Even in the news business there is a hunger for gamification.

How to Erase Your Data From an Old Computer or Phone

How to Erase Your Data From an Old Computer or Phone | Business Updates | Scoop.it

If you're disposing of old documents such as bank statements and tax forms, security experts recommend shredding the paperwork so it can't be used by identity thieves.

It's a practice everyone should be familiar with, since it may be the top recommendation for preventing identity theft.

However, many consumers and organizations are turning to a paperless world, and records once held in filing cabinets are now stored on computer hard drives.

But computers eventually get replaced, and old computers are donated, recycled, handed down or refurbished — often with personally identifiable information (PII) still on the machine.
