Management - Do you run your business or does it run you?

Management - Do you run your business or does it run you? | Business Updates | Scoop.it
One of the risks of running a business, especially as a soloist, is that it will take over your life. Here are four key ways to mitigate the risks.

John Wade: Coach; consultant; mentor's curator insight, September 12, 2013 8:08 AM

Good advice. I know many small and micro business owners who are prepared to sacrifice that which is outside their business, for the sake of what should be happening inside their business.

Following any (all?) of thse will help mitigate what might otherwise be costly...

Greg Lustig's curator insight, September 12, 2013 10:50 AM

Many if not most small business leaders are too busy creating business to effectively manage their business.Others simply are not good managers which is not a prerequisite for owning a business. In either case ,this results in a reactive management style as opposed to a proactive approach based on planning.Even in large corporations where actual management is delegated to the various members of the executive team, leadership can fall prey to the same challenges as they become too focused on producing projected results for their shareholders rather than actually managing the business. In such cases, the  business seems to take on a life of  its own In which its leaders are forced to react rather than manage. This can be avoided with foresight and careful planing for all foreseeable risks.

Phyllis Smith's curator insight, October 25, 2013 9:13 AM

No matter what anyone thinks about being a solo entrepreneur - you're still accountable for the productivity of your business and you will still wear the many hats it takes to have a successful business.  Don't think its a 9 to 5 job - as a business owner - you're always "on".

Hacker who exposed Facebook bug to get reward

Hacker who exposed Facebook bug to get reward | Business Updates | Scoop.it

A man who hacked into Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook page to expose a software bug is getting donations from hackers around the world after the company declined to pay him under a program that normally rewards people who report flaws.

Khalil Shreateh discovered and reported the flaw but was initially dismissed by the company's security team. He then posted a message on the billionaire's wall to prove the bug's existence.

Now, Marc Maiffret, chief technology officer of cybersecurity firm BeyondTrust, is trying to mobilise fellow hackers to raise a US$10,000 ($A11,081) reward for Shreateh after Facebook refused to compensate him.

Marissa Mayer to Rebuild Yahoo Labs With 50 New PhD Hires

Marissa Mayer to Rebuild Yahoo Labs With 50 New PhD Hires | Business Updates | Scoop.it

Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO)'s Marissa Mayer is boosting the company's research unit, which was downsized under her predecessor — betting on emerging technologies from big data to artificial intelligence.

Yahoo Labs has hired 30 researchers with PhDs in 2013 and plans to add another 20 by year end, Mayer said in an interview at the company's Sunnyvale, Calif. headquarters last week. The group is led by Chief Scientist Ron Brachman, a former scientist at the U.S. agency that helped invent the Internet.

How to Create a Meaningful Tumblr Campaign

How to Create a Meaningful Tumblr Campaign | Business Updates | Scoop.it

Since Tumblr's acquisition by Yahoo, users have been seeing an uptick in ads. This shouldn't come as a surprise, though; Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer said early and often that monetizing the microblogging platform "in a way that's meaningful and additive to the user experience" would be a priority.

When Mayer made these announcements, she couldn't have known exactly what she'd be getting in the way of campaigns. And yet, some brands have spent the past few months producing initiatives that fit her description well. Not only are they meaningful in the sense that they provide value to the user - whether in the form of visual interest or informational content - but they also enhance the Tumblr experience. Brands are creating pages, photos and animated GIFs that are worth reblogging and that users are happy to share — despite the fact that they bear the mark of the "sponsored post" dollar sign.

How Brands Use Twitter [INFOGRAPHIC]

How Brands Use Twitter [INFOGRAPHIC] | Business Updates | Scoop.it

Did you know that 97 percent of top brands are using Twitter in 2013, compared to just 62 percent in 2011?

Recent data that surveyed more than 250 leading brands in the U.S. and UK, shows that two-thirds had multiple accounts on Twitter. More than half (57 percent) had switched the tools they used to tweet in the last year, and firms in the States tweeted significantly more than their counterparts across the Atlantic...

Criminals use 3D-printed skimming devices on Sydney ATMs

Criminals use 3D-printed skimming devices on Sydney ATMs | Business Updates | Scoop.it

A gang of suspected Romanian criminals is using 3D printers and computer-aided design (CAD) to manufacture “sophisticated” ATM skimming devices used to fleece Sydney residents.

Commander of the NSW Fraud and Cybercrime Squad, Detective Superintendent Col Dyson, told iTnews the alleged gang focused on two types of ATM design, with one particularly “sophisticated” skimming device entirely self contained and accompanied by a tiny video camera.

Dyson declined to provide detail on how the devices were being manufactured, but said NSW Police were aware the gang was using 3D printers and CAD technology.

Zurker - a new social network with a difference

Zurker - a new social network with a difference | Business Updates | Scoop.it

Zurker - a new social network:

http://www.zurker.net/i-271732-iaxgtugifc

My first reaction - "do we need yet another social network?"

After reading about the philosophy of Zurker, my answer was "yes" - because it is one that is owned by the network members and responsive to needs of the network members, rather than being a centralized, corporate, profit-oriented, juggernaut.

Zurker is literally a member-owned application.  You actually get shares in the company and so can profit from its growth.

And Zurker is driven by democracy. It's new - and still developing. Instead of changes being introduced top-down (whether you wanted the change or not) Zurker seeks out your ideas and feedback, so that their development team can develop the social application most in tune with what users actually want.

And it's free, of course.  Check it out here:

5 Social Media Tactics to Increase ROI

5 Social Media Tactics to Increase ROI | Business Updates | Scoop.it

Social can be one of the most challenging platforms for brands to measure return on investment. Companies that grew up on traditional advertising and metrics often have trouble making sense of the value of the online ecosystem. But with 52% of U.S. consumers using the web as their primary purchase tool, it's an area brands can't afford to ignore.

Last week the commenting platform Livefyre hosted an evening chat with a handful of influential analysts, marketers and publishers, sharing thoughts on need-to-know ROI growth tools. It's a formula Forrester Senior Analyst Kim Celestre calls "social depth," a fancy phrase for discovering, exploring and engaging with online consumers, eventually leading those conversations back to brands' websites.

Read more about the social depth formula broken down into five, easy tips: http://mashable.com/2013/08/02/social-media-increase-roi/

Google Ranking Factors: Correlations Between Social Media Engagement and Rankings in the SERPs

Google Ranking Factors: Correlations Between Social Media Engagement and Rankings in the SERPs | Business Updates | Scoop.it

Recently, Search Metrics released a white paper on their findings for Google’s SEO Ranking Factors in 2013. It displays the correlation between particular metrics such as ‘Facebook Likes’ and ‘Backlinks’ and the rank ability of a page within Google.

Also available in the 70 page document are comparisons with 2012’s data, where that data is available. Not to many marketers surprise, a lot has changed. According to Search Metrics, it’s time to get social! In this article I graze upon some of the most important areas as well as my thoughts on what Google is playing it – for better and worse.

The data from search metrics is based on research and is not 100% factual. Nor are my opinions factual, but rather opinions and statements based on what I believe to be happening.
