Google Chairman Eric Schmidt and super-investor Peter Thiel took aim at each other over the seemingly benign topic of the role of technology in society on the opening night of the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference, with moderator Adam Lashinsky of Fortune attempting to moderate, often in vain.
Schmidt opened the dialogue with a predictably optimistic take on how technology and access to information has increased productivity and quality of life worldwide. Thiel responded by commending Schmidt for “doing a fantastic job” as “minister of propaganda” for Google.

Tech Salaries Take Biggest Jump in a Decade | Business Updates | Scoop.it

Working in the technology sector is paying off more than ever, new research shows.

A study by the online career site Dice.com revealed that technology salaries in the U.S. saw their biggest jump in more than a decade. Specifically, tech professionals earned a greater than 5% increase in average annual wages to $85,619, up from $81,327 in 2011.

Natalie Stewart's insight:

Overall, average salaries for tech professionals with at least 15 years of experience topped six figures for the first time, growing 4% from a year ago to $103,012. Those with less than two years of experience also saw an increase from last year, up 8% to $46,315.

Sony is planning to close its optical drive division Optiarc, Japan's Asahi Shimbun reports.

The move is a part of Sony’s global restructuring effort, in which the company plans to cut some 10,000 jobs. Just last week, Sony announced it would cut 1,000 jobs in an effort to revamp its mobile division.
