15 Web Alternatives to Popular Desktop Software

15 Web Alternatives to Popular Desktop Software | BUSINESS and more | Scoop.it

Web applications have come a long way. They used to be amateur imitations of their desktop counterparts, with only one or two functions and not at all practical. But my, have these web apps grown. Web apps these days have become so powerful and useful that in some cases, they’ve begun to replace desktop software.

Desktop programs are great and all, but they don’t provide the same benefits as web apps that make use of cloud computing. With most web apps, you only need a browser and an internet connection to access all your data online. That beats having to install annoying programs any day. To give you a better sense of how useful web apps have become, I’ve compiled a list of web tools and apps that can very well replace some desktop programs. I hope you take the time to try them all out. You’ll be surprised how well they work.

Without further ado, here are some great web alternatives to the popular desktop programs we all love.

Build Your Own Mobile App With Appsbar

Build Your Own Mobile App With Appsbar | BUSINESS and more | Scoop.it
Everyone talks about how important it is to build an iPhone or Android app, but it doesn’t look inexpensive or easy. Until now. I’ve been testing appsbar, a free Web-based app that allows small business owners create their own iOS or Android application.

I found appsbar.com when researching the digital coupon phenomenon (think Groupon and Living Social) and discovered a post by appsbar founder Scott Hirsch, who built the tool, in part, as a do-it-yourself coupon service. From the merchant point of view, the pricing of coupons is expensive. Most business owners considering coupons could benefit from a tool that lets you build it yourself and keep the profit margins higher...

The Science and Results of Real-Time Content Optimization

The Science and Results of Real-Time Content Optimization | BUSINESS and more | Scoop.it

I’ve been writing Convince & Convert for more than three years, and I continue to be grateful and delighted that you choose to spend time here, when faced with a tsunami of blog options.

I continue to find it fascinating, however, that even though this blog is probably considered successful within its very small niche, approximately 70% of the visitors here are first-timers (according to Google Analytics). And approximately 35% of you came from a search engine.

You know what drives magazine subscriptions? Newsstand sales. Readers don’t start loyal. They sample the product first, and decide they want consistent consumption. Blogs work the exact same way, except Search is our newsstand...

Page Owners: Save your Discussions from Your Facebook Page Before it’s too Late!

Page Owners: Save your Discussions from Your Facebook Page Before it’s too Late! | BUSINESS and more | Scoop.it

Since the early days, Facebook page owners had the possibility to add a Discussions tab to their Facebook page. At some point, over 55 Million users were using this tab to talk, share their points of view, give feedback, and connect with each other. Then Facebook changed the layout of the pages, which lead to a drop in traffic, but the tab is still widely used today: 22 Million users per month use this tab.

Conscious of those issues, we have built a free Facebook Application called Forum for Pages in order to offer a solution for page owners to keep the discussions on their Facebook pages. The application is easy to use...

Why if you miss Siri you’ll miss the future of the Web

Why if you miss Siri you’ll miss the future of the Web | BUSINESS and more | Scoop.it

Siri is the most useful thing I’ve seen so far this year.

But after playing with it, getting an interview with its CEO (video here on building43) it’s even more important for you to pay attention to.

It is the best example of what the web will be.

Let’s go back.
Web 1994 was the “get me a domain and a page” era.
Web 2000 was the “make my page(s) interactive and put people on it” era.
Web 2010 is the “get rid of pages and glue APIs and people together” era.

Siri is the best example. First, it’s not a website. It’s an application you put on your phone (today iPhone, soon others like Android and Blackberry). Second, it isn’t a search engine, those are so 1998. It’s a system that assists you in your life.

Facebook users get a Flipboard-like magazine with NewsMix | BUSINESS and more | Scoop.it

NewsMix launched its Facebook app today, which will allow people to follow posts from their fan pages in one, consolidated digital magazine.

You know the saying “fall through the cracks?” Well, Facebook’s news feed is a content chasm. Interesting posts from your liked pages can fall to the bottom and are often ignored, even though the content might be good. NewsMix takes your liked pages, whether they are news-oriented or not, and forms them into your own curated magazine within Facebook.

“I really think Facebook should fix the problem of … the news feed,” Francois Bochatay, chief executive of NewsMix’s parent company Sobees, told VentureBeat. “What we tried to fix is getting the news in one place. There should be another place for the friends.”...

JamPot's new AppBuilder asks a series of questions and spits out a genuine, though limited-function, app. It could blow the market wide open.

With JamPot's AppBuilder, you can build a genuine iPhone or Android app in mere minutes for free--according to the company's own website. The young company, savvy to the ever-shifting smartphone market, says it will soon support Windows Phone 7 too, meaning it'll address the market that RIM seems to be losing its grip on very fast according to new surveys on smartphone use.

The idea behind AppBuilder, JamPot's VP of Sales Matthew David explained to Fast Company, is simple. By using its web interface, pretty much anyone, no matter their coding expertise, can create a smartphone app and have it running on their device within minutes.

Disconnect was created by three former Google employees who wanted to continue using Facebook but had concerns about their privacy policy. Their extension prevents sites and search engines such as Google, Facebook and Twitter from tracking your online activity while you surf the web.

Amazing set of features launched by Facebook since Google + launch | BUSINESS and more | Scoop.it

It’s just over 3 months since Google dropped the bombshell that it was launching their own social network and inevitably the attention immediately switched to Facebook to see what they would do in counter the launch. Facebook were initially quiet but they went in to their famous “Lockdown” phase and started rolling out a whole host of new features many of which were lightly “inspired” by Google +. If anything the launch by Google seems to have helped accelerate the development cycle at Facebook with the main beneficiaries being the end users who are getting an improved service. Whatever way you look at it and despite the fact that Facebook were working on some of this stuff before anyway you can’t but be impressed at the staggering response to the launch of Google + by Facebook…
