Barnes & Noble steers towards Nook Business And away from traditional “Dead Tree” Publishing Company | Industry shift: Cross-sector ventures & alliances | Scoop.it

First, Barnes&Noble has reportedly put their publishing arm, Sterling Publishing, up for sale, a company it bought in 2009 for $115 million. The Nook generated most of B&N’s online sales for a total of $327 million in revenue, an increase of 43%.“This increase was driven by continued growth of the NOOK business, offset by a decline in online physical product sales.” All nook sales brought the company $448 million, with an increased potion of that coming through third-party retailers – a point that doesn’t look good for the actual book stores.

In all, they sold 70% more Nook devices over last year. The real money makers – cookbooks and crossword puzzles –

What's Hollywood fear of embracing transmedia?- Entertainment News, Technology News, Media - Variety | Industry shift: Cross-sector ventures & alliances | Scoop.it

"These changes require a shift in attitude and a new understanding of the technology that's currently coming out and in development. Transmedia & Advertising: Unilever's Keith Weed: We Must 'Get to the Future First' | | Industry shift: Cross-sector ventures & alliances | Scoop.it

The megatrend that Mr. Weed is watching closely: the move to an on-demand world of content and what it will mean for the billions Unilever spends on TV advertising worldwide.

"The cloud is important to us because now people can select what they want to view when they want to view it, and as an advertiser there are consequences for that," Mr. Weed said. "There might be an opportunity for the brand to be a filter; using Axe, say, to get male programming, or with a beauty brand or food."

Unilever is also forming what it calls a Digital Advisory Board and filling it with outside execs to help the packaged-goods giant navigate the future.

Books & social sharing: Rethink Books Gives Us A Glimpse At Social Books (Video Demo) | Industry shift: Cross-sector ventures & alliances | Scoop.it

Nobody has really turbocharged sharing for electronic books yet.

Rethink Books isn’t necessarily going to solve the problem, but at least they are approaching it in the right way. The Rethink Books startup wants to incorporate sharing features into every electronic book and turn them into social books. The company is approaching publishers who want to put out electronic book titles as individual apps, and Rethink is hoping to power the social sharing features of those books. If Apple and Amazon decide to open up their electronic book marketplaces, they could create a book reader for the their digital books as well.

Apple Butting Heads With Content Producers Over iTV

Apple Butting Heads With Content Producers Over iTV | Industry shift: Cross-sector ventures & alliances | Scoop.it

Problem with itv. Several sources describe difficulties on Apple’s part securing the content that would be necessary to make their device worthwhile. After all, people using a next-generation content consumption device don’t want to be told that Fox shows are available but not Universal ones. We’re supposed to be leaving all that 20th-century dross behind.

That’s not to say network & cable executives don’t recognize an opportunity. They smell money, but they’re not willing to bite until they can be sure they aren’t falling into a trap.

5 Steps To Measure The ROI Of Digital Media Channels | Fast Company | Industry shift: Cross-sector ventures & alliances | Scoop.it
Many marketers have worked hard in 2011 to develop appropriately customized ROI measures for social media.

Most marketers are starting to understand that the most effective digital communication plans seamlessly integrate content across paid, earned, and owned media channels. As a quick reminder, paid media includes display ads, sponsorships, and paid search. Earned media is largely social in nature. Owned media is represented by content such as your brand website and native apps.

Unified interactive media platform to overcome mobile fragmentation & cater to emerging countries

In other words, Cinemacraft wants to enable even owners of low-end phones in mobile markets with weak bandwith and latency issues to consume content such as movies, TV programs, music, games, comics, or interactive video ads on their handsets. (Again, smartphones like the iPhone or iPad, Android, Windows Phones, or Blackberry are supported, too.) The ultimate goal is a unified interactive media platform that overcomes the fragmentation problem observed in the mobile world today.

Apps Are Media | Industry shift: Cross-sector ventures & alliances | Scoop.it

Except there already is a global market for digital media. They are called apps, and they represent the future of media in many ways. Apps are media. Not only are they a form of media in the way that consumer software and games have always been considered media (they compete with TV, books, and music for consumers’ time and attention). But increasingly, they are also subsuming other forms of media.

Why Would a Newspaper Company Launch a Startup Incubator?

Why Would a Newspaper Company Launch a Startup Incubator? | Industry shift: Cross-sector ventures & alliances | Scoop.it

For most print publishers, the transition from ink to pixels has been at least somewhat painful. Over the last few years, the industry has seen widespread layoffs, furloughs, bankruptcies and newspaper closures. PMN's experiment may be the first of its kind at a big city daily newspaper, but its not the first time that any publisher has tried incubating startups. Hearst and Conde Nast have both launched digital products built by in-house startups, some of which have nothing to do with the publishers' traditional businesses.
