Seven Horrible Job-Search Tips To Ignore

Seven Horrible Job-Search Tips To Ignore | Outplacement Skills | Scoop.it
Not all job-search advice is good advice. Liz Ryan rips seven of the worst job-search tips she's heard. These are seven job-search tips to ignore!
Irene Southern's insight:

The key thing to remember here is to be yourself and to value yourself. After all you want to be contented in your job, so why try to fit yourself into a position that is so far from who you really are that you'll just be longing to get out as soon as you start. It wouldn't be good for you and it wouldn't be good for the employer.

Irene Southern's insight:

The impression this research gives me is that people are not serious about the job search, and that if they throw enough darts (applications) one of them will hit the mark. It may work for people already in work just playing the field, but if you are out of work or know that you will be made redundant then I think a different mindset is called for.

Berks man loses thousands in online search for job
WFMZ Allentown
Job seekers beware. One Berks County man was job hunting online and ended up falling victim to a scam.
Irene Southern's insight:

This sort of thing could have happened to me a few years ago when I was being enticed into what seemed to be one of those 'too good to be true jobs' in the Kenyan Oil Industry. I  had emails and phone calls and all sorts but checked out the names and places on the Internet and found a number of other people who were suspicious so left it all well alone.  Better unemployed than scammed!

When Life gives you Lemons, Make Lemonade! That's a very interesting thought, let's see why! Lemons, here, are experiences and opportunities. We have to make sure that we have got the lemons to start with.
Irene Southern's insight:

The importance of truth and honesty go without saying. In that stressful interview will you sound rehearsed or unsure of yourself because you cannot remember your fabricated CV backwards? Mistakes, failures and bad moves all add up to who we are. Don't over emphasize them, but don't be afraid to show how you learned from your mistakes. Actually, one of the most difficult things in an interview is talking about these things because we practise all the positives about ourselves and our careers before the big day, but forget our negatives and mistakes and then struggle to recount them and turn them into positives in that all important interview. So, follow the advice in this article, and don't forget the lemons.

boomer men take the Botox plunge - MarketWatch

boomer men take the Botox plunge

“Appearance matters in a job search,” said John Challenger, CEO of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, a Chicago-based global outplacement firm.
Irene Southern's insight:

As a 'boomer' woman I guess the assumption among folks in the US at least, is that women are already and quite naturally having botox. As a Brit I can honestly tell you that I don't know anyone among my friends who would consider having any kind of treatment. We take a more healthy approach to how we look and present ourselves - by having a suitable and fashionable hairstyle, dressing in a classy or stylish way using colour where appropriate, a modest amount of makeup, being healthy and not overeating or drinking too much and taking appropriate exercise to keep active. If you follow these rules then you don't need to waste money having poison pumped into your face.  Age is an attitude of mind - but you have to apply this attitude to every aspect of how you present yourself.

A really useful video on Vimeo here that will help job seekers to create a really great 'shop window' CV.  Remember to include your contact details at the start. Miss out 'objectives'. Add a skills summary. Use facts and figures. Use bullets. Don't use cliches and slang. Use only language that resonates with the industry you're applying for.  Try to find out about the person who is in a position to make hiring decisions so that you are able to connect with them.

7 Must Haves To Make Facebook Work For Your Job Search

It's Facebook's graph search -- the ability to look for people who represent a certain set of characteristics -- that makes it a potentially powerful tool for companies seeking workers.
Irene Southern's insight:

My only reason for using these networking sites is for work purposes. I prefer other ways of communicating with my friends and family, so I'm not in danger of scaring away potential employers (unless of course they consider that not being on Facebook is a disqualification in itself). However, if you're one of the millions using Facebook perhaps this is one to take note of when on the hunt for a job.
