Empower the young to empower the economy

Empower the young to empower the economy | Business Scotland | Scoop.it
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that when my generation is drawing their pensions that those pensions will have to be paid for by the economic activity of today’s young people. That means the best way to secure our economic future is to build a future for the young of today.

The Power of Supermarkets Over Scotland

The Power of Supermarkets Over Scotland | Business Scotland | Scoop.it
In February 2008, a written declaration was adopted by a majority of Members of the European Parliament requesting the European Commission to investigate and remedy “the abuse of power by large supermarkets operating in the European Union”. With yet more increased concentration of supermarket stores in a few retailer chains, the relationship between retailers and suppliers had been changing all over the EU, resulting in abuses of buyer power by supermarkets. What we will show here is how, seven years on, Westminster is failing to grapple adequately with these problems in the UK.

Business for Scotland welcomes new economic strategy

Business for Scotland welcomes new economic strategy | Business Scotland | Scoop.it
Business for Scotland welcomes the Scottish Government’s new economic strategy, announced today by FM Nicola Sturgeon.

The idea for targeted tax allowances to stimulate growth has been championed by Business for Scotland. Rather than a blanket corporation tax cut, companies could earn allowances with behaviours that match Scotland’s key priorities such as investing in R&D, boosting productivity or hitting targets on apprenticeships.  A Government with fewer economic levers than its international competitors has to be creative.

Osborne must include west coast oil survey in budget promise

Osborne must include west coast oil survey in budget promise   | Business Scotland | Scoop.it
Pre-election budgets are always more political theatre than economics and Wednesday’s was more punch and judy than Theatre Royal.  The first half hour was essentially a free party political broadcast, a line by line rebuttal on Labour’s election message’s.  To be fair to the Chancellor, this budget was a political success but economically its a mess. The joke about Miliband’s two kitchens was quite funny given the Labour leader’s call to take their election message to every kitchen table in the land.

Gordon Brown's oil fund - the ultimate contradiction

Gordon Brown's oil fund - the ultimate contradiction | Business Scotland | Scoop.it
Gordon Brown is the man who once promised us an end to boom and bust and then presided over the biggest bust in living memory.  He made a promise to the Scottish people on a timetable for new powers for Scotland if there was a No vote, and then championed a petition saying that Westminster hadn’t delivered to his own timetable. Brown, who as UK Chancellor and then Prime Minister refused steadfastly to invest in a sovereign oil fund to help deal with volatility in oil prices, has today called for an oil fund to be set up to deal with the current volatility in oil prices.

Paying the Living Wage makes good business sense

Paying the Living Wage makes good business sense | Business Scotland | Scoop.it
The UK economy is recovering slowly and, as the UK General Election looms, the main Westminster parties are trying to trump one another on budget cuts promises. The Tories are claiming they will reduce the deficit through cuts but without major tax rises. Labour has responded by voting with the Tories on budget cuts, but telling anyone that will listen “don’t worry it won’t affect the NHS”. So keen is Labour to convince the voters that they are not going to bust Britain (again) they even use rapid rebuttals to prove they will cut as deeply as the Tories. My favourite example was the Labour press team tweet “p.44 of Tory dossier says Labour will cancel cuts to the arts budget. We won’t.”  This sort of statement might go down well in the South East, but Labour emphasising its commitment to continued austerity is a gift to the SNP.
