Scotland’s century of lost wealth

Scotland’s century of lost wealth | Business Scotland | Scoop.it

Business for Scotland’s research on Scotland’s economy has delivered solid proof that Scotland subsidises the UK, not the other way around. Initially anti independence campaigners claimed we were wrong, we’ve since produced so much evidence they’ve since backed off. That evidence clearly demonstrates Scotland has paid £64bn in interest on debt incurred by the rest of the UK, not Scotland.

The Independence Dividend: Opportunities for the Property Sector

The Independence Dividend: Opportunities for the Property Sector | Business Scotland | Scoop.it

Scanning the economic horizon to target effective business development is a necessity in any sector. We in the business community will routinely use various tools e.g. a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats), business plans and visioning etc. Many of us have had to develop a capacity for critical thinking and to question populist statements that are presented as ‘facts’ (which are often not really at all, and quickly dissolve under the most basic scrutiny). Most importantly, we have to take a step back and look at the big picture.

Little cheer from pickup in new businesses - Scottish Economy Watch | Business Scotland | Scoop.it

The data for new businesses in the first quarter this year were released today by the Committee of Scottish Bankers. As I noted in earlier posts e.g. here, this series records new business start-ups based in Scotland that have opened accounts with any of the four Scottish Clearing Banks. It is a valuable series because it should be expected that the creation of new firms would move in line with overall economic performance and GDP in particular.

Bill Jamieson: Data shows why UK is truly divided

SO INWARD-looking has been the debate on Scottish independence that it is often assumed marked differences of wealth, output and performance are confined to comparisons between Scotland and the rest of the UK.

Peter A Bell's insight:

There's a somewhat distasteful smugness to Bill Jamieson's assumption that nobody else has noticed the fact that social and economic "imbalances" exist within Scotland as well as between Scotland and the rest of the UK (rUK).

And he is quite wrong to suggest that the independence debate ignores this issue. Is it not one of the central arguments of the pro-independence campaign that we need the powers associated with the normal constitutional status of a nation in order to adequately address these imbalances?

Why should we believe that anything will be done to correct these imbalances within the context of a British state for which they are a defining feature?
