The most valuable brands in the world, in one chart

The most valuable brands in the world, in one chart | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

Six years after it lost the crown to Apple Inc., Google Inc. has reclaimed the title of the most valuable brand in the world. For Android fans, the reversal of fortune is especially gratifying given that much of Apple’s luster was largely due to the success of its iPhone.

“Google won out mainly because Apple’s fall was even more dramatic. The iPhone company saw its value drop by 26%,” said HowMuch.Net.

As of 2017, Alphabet’s GOOGL, +0.07% GOOG, +0.17%  Google brand is worth $109.47 billion, and Apple AAPL, +0.46%  is valued at $107.14 billion.

See larger map

“The market is volatile and their survival is precarious. Huge, wealthy brands can stumble and shrink to a ghost of their former selves,” HowMuch said.

Brand value is more than just how much money companies are worth, according to the cost-estimating website. It also captures the abstract quality of how much confidence consumers have in the brand, as well as name recognition.

Following closely on Apple’s heels is Amazon.com Inc. AMZN, +0.48%  at $106.37 billion. AT&T Inc. T, +0.45%  comes in at fourth with $87.2 billion and Microsoft Corp.MSFT, +1.30%   rounds out the top five at $76.27 billion, underscoring the dominance and the prestige of U.S. brands across the globe.

Samsung 005930, +0.00% the Korean conglomerate that makes everything from Galaxy smartphones to apparel, was sixth with a brand value of $66.2 billion. The only other non-American brand to crack the top 10 list was Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, at $47.8 billion, Brand Finance data show.

Snap Inc, owner of the popular Snapchat app, said it expected to spend $1 billion over the next five years to use Amazon's cloud services, in addition to the $2 billion cloud contract it already has with Google.

Snap may eventually invest in building its own infrastructure, it said on Thursday, in an amendment to a filing related to its planned stock market debut in March.

The company, which filed its IPO registration statement a week earlier, is looking to raise $3 billion.

Snap could be valued at between $20 billion and $25 billion, giving the company the biggest valuation in a U.S. technology IPO since Facebook.

Venice, California-based Snap has said it relies on Google Cloud to host the vast majority of its computing, storage, and bandwidth.

Flogging and Eye-Gouging Are Among Iran’s Medieval Punishments for ‘Morality’ Violations

Flogging and Eye-Gouging Are Among Iran’s Medieval Punishments for ‘Morality’ Violations | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

Despite the many flaws in the nuclear deal with Iran, Tehran’s nuclear program has been curbed. Yet at what cost? As the new Trump administration realizes, the Islamic Republic is still a major violator of the human rights of its people.

The regime’s continued practice of “cruel and inhuman punishments, including floggings, amputations and forced blinding over the past year, exposes the authorities’ utterly brutal sense of justice,” Amnesty International reported, continuing to express concern over executions in Iran, all of which highlight how Iran’s so-called justice system, by legalizing such brutality, has no sense of humanity.

Well into the 21st century, such an aggressive approach vis-à-vis human dignity is quite appalling, to say the least, and deserves serious attention, as Iran continues to neglect, and violate, international prohibitions issued against torture and other abuse.

The fierce battles that continue to rage against US President Donald Trump and the new administration in Washington, DC that...

The regime’s so-called “laws” provide for flogging as punishment for 100 different “offences.” Many flogging victims are protesters under the age of 35, arrested for activities considered protected under internationally recognized rights for freedom of association, belief, expression and religion. Yet Iran is a signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), making it legally bound not to engage in “cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”

Nevertheless, its obligations have been completely ignored by Tehran, with its penalties for crimes regularly including stoning to death — under the ridiculous claim of “protecting religious morals.” Such a horrific practice proves this regime knows nothing of Islam, or of any other religion, for that matter.

Journalists and bloggers in Iran are also subject to flogging for practicing their freedom of speech rights. One member of the press was sentenced to a ruthless 459 lashes for what the regime’s ruling described as “publishing lies” and “creating unease in the public mind” through his work.

Even women have received lashings for attending mixed-gender parties – considered banned under the mullahs’ sick interpretation of Islam – after being caught at such gatherings by Iran’s so-called “morality police.” Indeed, authorities are known to storm parties and beat attendees prior to their being brought to police stations, where they are insulted, interrogated and tortured. Such individuals usually receive 74 lashes and spend three nights behind bars.

While flogging remains a highly practiced method by the mullahs, Amnesty International also reported on a case in which a man’s eyes were forcibly gouged out — in a punishment known as an “eye for an eye” retribution — a horrible fate many imprisoned individuals face.

Other of Iran’s medieval practices include “cross amputations” for thieves, whose fingers and toes are cut off unevenly on either side of their bodies.

It is worth noting here that all of the above atrocities were recorded in 2016, well into the tenure of President Hassan Rouhani, ironically dubbed as a “moderate” and/or “reformist.” Rouhani, in fact, has presided over nearly 3,000 executions, surpassing any recent records set by his predecessors, including firebrand Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Ahmed Shaheed, former United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in Iran, voiced his concerns in a report revealing that Iranian authorities in 2015 alone sent to the gallows 966-1,054 people, four of whom were under the age of 18.

Just over a month into the new year, the trend is in full swing.

“The execution of at least 57 prisoners, mostly youths, has been registered in Iran since the beginning of 2017. Twenty of the victims were hanged on January 14,” according to a statement issued by Iranian opposition National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), an umbrella group of dissidents, including the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).

NCRI President Maryam Rajavi has long called for a firm stance on  Iran’s long slate of human rights violations, most importantly referring Iran’s dossier to the U.N. Security Council.

“The Iranian Resistance declared years ago that it calls for abolition of the death penalty and an end to torture and all forms of rights abuses in Iran,” Rajavi says.

Security guard who killed 60-year-old Chesapeake man acted in self defense, attorney says

Security guard who killed 60-year-old Chesapeake man acted in self defense, attorney says | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

An attorney said Thursday a guard with Chesapeake-based Citywide Protection Services was acting in self defense last week when he shot and killed a 60-year-old man in the River Walk neighborhood.

The family of Jiansheng Chen has described the Chinese immigrant over the past week as a kindly grandfather who was playing "Pokemon Go"when he was shot in his minivan a half-mile from his home.

But an attorney for Citywide argued Chen wasn't as mild mannered as the family claims.

"There was a history of problems between the company and Mr. Chen," Andrew Sacks said without offering details. He said he would provide additional information Monday afternoon during a news conference at his office.

"We are going to have a very strong, hard hitting, very accurate, very credible and fully documented statement about what actually happened," Sacks said, stressing the company's desire to "set the record straight."

In announcing his news conference, however, Sacks did offer some new information about what happened between the guard and Chen. He said a second person was in the guard's vehicle at the time of the shooting, and that that person witnessed "relevant portions" of what led up to the shooting. He also said a vehicle can be used as a deadly weapon.

Police said Chen was sitting in his minivan outside the clubhouse in the 700 block of River Walk Pkwy. around 11 p.m. Thursday when he was confronted by a security guard. They argued and the guard fired. Bullets were shot through various windows of the van, police said.

Charges have not been filed and the guard's name has not been released.

Police have declined to provide the Pilot with the police report or 911 call audio from the incident, citing state code that exempts criminal investigative files from disclosure.

The River Walk Community Association has suspended its contract with Citywide, the board said in a statement emailed through a spokesman Thursday.

The community "did have a contract for unarmed roving patrol services for the community boat ramp and clubhouse" but immediately cut it off after the shooting.

The contract had been in place since 2010 and provided for guards to stop through the boat ramp and clubhouse area three times a night, said association spokesman Billy Rudolph. The association originally said the incident took place outside of its property, but Rudolph said that was an internal misunderstanding.

Community officials have gathered footage of that night from security cameras at the clubhouse. It does not contain audio and only captures cars driving into the parking lot, he said.

Rudolph said police have not asked for the footage.

Through an attorney, Chen's family has said he was a "kind, wise and caring family man" who was the first in his family to immigrate to America from China 28 years ago in search of a better life.

Chen spoke barely any English, according to his family.

Israeli Military Sees Spike in Number of Women Serving in Combat Units | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

The number of women serving in Israel’s combat units continues to rise, with about 2,800 slated to fill such roles this year, according to figures revealed in a special meeting of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.

The Israeli Navy saw a 93 percent increase in females serving in combat positions and there were double the number of women serving in such roles with Israel’s Border Police. The IDF’s Homefront Command had 38% more women in its ranks this past year and the number of female soldiers in artillery units was up 19%.

Brig. Gen. Eran Shani, head of the Planning Brigade and Manpower Administration in the IDF Personnel Directorate, told the committee meeting, “As we are an army of the people, we aspire to integrate all population sectors and allow the greatest possible equality of opportunities. We have expanded the number of roles open to women, which now comprise 90 percent of all service positions in the IDF.”

Shani added that the military is working to establish its first-ever training base for mixed-gender battalions.

Watershed Facts: KER (Lake Kerr)

Watershed Facts: KER (Lake Kerr) | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

Basin characterization

184.835 km²

Location: latitude 29°21’05.905”, longitude 81°46’46.038”, GPS datum—WGS-1984 Station KER is located on Lake Kerr between Kauffmans Island and Point Pleasant.

Point sources: There are no wastewater treatment facilities within a five-mile radius or within the drainage basin of this water quality site.

Lake Kerr is a beautiful, clear water lake located just west of Salt Springs, Fla., in north-central Florida. It covers approximately 2,830 acres and is surrounded by the Ocala National Forest. There is a public boat ramp located at a county park off Forest Road 88 on the west side of Lake Kerr. There is not a lot of parking available for vehicles and boat trailers, so get there early if you are going for a day of boating or fishing.

Lake Kerr is a popular location for locals on a hot summer day and the clear waters are very inviting! An island has emerged in the center of the main part of the lake, so the lake now is shaped like a little letter “e.” Private residences surround the lake, but it is not overdeveloped. You can gain access to Little Lake Kerr to the east by way of a narrow canal, if the water level is high enough.

There is plenty to do in the area. The Ocala National Forest surrounds Lake Kerr and offers many opportunities for the outhoors enthusiast, from hunting, to camping, to riding all-terrain vehicles, and more. Salt Springs National Park is nearby and offers swimming and camping also.

Amazon’s Jeff Bezos was asked if he’ll run for president, and this is what he said

Amazon’s Jeff Bezos was asked if he’ll run for president, and this is what he said | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

Amazon boss Jeff Bezos recently paid a reported $23 million for the biggest home in Washington, D.C., a move that prompted Billboard’s Stephen Witt, in a recent interview, to ask the media-shy exec whether he has designs on the White House.

Here’s what the world’s 5th-richest man, according to Forbes, had to say:

‘Oh, no. I don’t think so… I love my life. I love being an inventor. I love Blue Origin, my space company. I love The Washington Post… basically I have a very full life. And I really like it.’Jeff Bezos

Witt then asked how he feels about President Donald Trump, whom Bezos once accused of “eroding our democracy.” But he didn’t bite.

“Well, I’m, you know...” he paused, looking down and remaining quiet for a moment. “I feel that this interview is about music.”

True. The interview was mostly about music and Amazon’s AMZN, +0.47%  role in ushering in what Steve Boom, VP of the company’s music division, calls “the Golden Age” of the music industry.

Boom and Bezos grabbed the 12th spot on Billboard’s “2017 Power 100” list of “visionary label bosses, tech gurus, artist managers and media moguls.” They earned that distinction primarily through the success of Alexa, Amazon’s digital assistant and gateway to its vast music library.

“At this point in the marriage of voice-activation technology with music, I can tell you it’s already working,” Bezos said. “The next gigantic growth area for the music industry is the home.”

Some may wonder if that home growth includes the White House.

The chaos has been compared to the 2014 thriller film The Purge, where people take advantage of the absence of law and order to carry out horrific crimes.

With officers staging a walk-out over conditions and wages, thugs are running riot, with people running rampant with guns and machetes, shops being robbed, buses set on fire and dead bodies are left lying in the street.

'Fear for his life' led security officer to shoot 60-Year-Old grandfather, attorney says | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

An attorney for a Virginia-based security company said the shooting of a 60-year-old man last month was "justifiable" after a security officer felt his life was in danger when the man tried to run the officer down with his van.

Andrew Sacks, attorney for Citywide Protection Services, spoke to reporters Monday about the fatal shooting of Jiansheng Chen, who died after a Citywide officer discharged his firearm at Chen's van in the River Walk neighborhood of Chesapeake, Virginia.

"Our focus is on what happened that night," Sacks told NBC News following the press conference, adding that Citywide Protection Services was cooperating fully with ongoing investigations into the Jan. 26 incident, but wanted to counter any information out there that sought to misrepresent the company's actions.

'30 Under 30' honoree Amanda Nguyen is fighting for sexual assault survivors' rights

'30 Under 30' honoree Amanda Nguyen is fighting for sexual assault survivors' rights | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

In 2014, Amanda Nguyen set out to "rewrite the law" on protecting the civil rights of sexual assault and rape survivors through the founding of Rise, a nonprofit consisting of a coalition of sexual assault survivors and allies working to empower survivors. Two years later, in February 2016, legislation she helped draft was introduced in Congress; seven months later, former President Barack Obama signed the Sexual Assault Survivors' Rights Act into law.

No one can make us feel invisible when we demand to be seen.”

For Nguyen, the fight to keep survivors informed of their rights and to prevent rape kits from being destroyed has been an ongoing one. Nguyen was raped three years ago in the state of Massachusetts, and although she had a rape kit performed, she discovered it would be destroyed after six months if an extension request wasn't filed.

"Every 6 months, I have to save my rape kit from the trash by filing an extension request to make sure that it is saved. I live my life according to the date of my rape to ensure that my access to justice is preserved - 6 months from my rape, 1 year from my rape, 18 months from my rape. These are the dates that must swirl through my head so that I can one day seek justice," Nguyen wrote on her GoFundMe page in August.

Frustrated and re-traumatized by a broken justice system, Nguyen met with Sen. Jeanne Shaheen to brainstorm legislation that would protect survivor rights on the federal level — the same legislation that is now law.

The Sexual Assault Survivors' Bill of Rights protects the right to having the evidence of a rape kit preserved without charge for the duration of the statute of limitations; the right to be informed of rights, the right to a counselor, including the right to be informed no later than 60 days before the destruction of a rape kit, among other detailed rights.

Beer-tasting group SFLHops visits South Florida breweries, hosts bottle-share events

Beer-tasting group SFLHops visits South Florida breweries, hosts bottle-share events | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

Broward teacher Stuart Skopit started SFLHops, a South Florida beer tasting group, when he saw the need to educate his colleagues on beer and its many varieties.

“When we would hang out after work, my colleagues would always order wine,” Skopit said. “Most of them are women, so I wanted to show them that beer is just as good, if not better.”

For two years, Skopit has connected with beer lovers through meetup.com, Facebook, Instagram and Untappd, all under the name of SFLHops.

On Saturday, SFLHops will hold its second beer festival, this year at Craft Beer Cartel in Fort Lauderdale.

SFLHops Beer Festival will bring together 22 breweries, food trucks and live music.

“Unlike full-blown festivals, it will not nearly be as many people, so the festival will have a much more intimate feel, with little-to-no lines waiting for the beers,” Skopit said.

Festival goers will have the opportunity to participate in a VIP bottle share, as well. An attendee who purchases a VIP ticket will need to bring at least two “stellar bottles” of beer to share with others who are also VIPs. A portion of ticket sales will benefit Animal Aid, a no-kill animal shelter in Coconut Creek.

SFLHops holds events throughout South Florida. 305 Brews with SFLHops takes place Friday, Feb. 24, in Wynwood. Previous events have been held in Miami, Oakland Park, Doral, Miami Gardens and Wellington. The group visits different local breweries, other beer festivals and also does “bottle shares,” in which members bring their own beer bottles from across the country and get to share them.

Skopit works closely with the breweries to bring his group members deals such as a free flight (sampling) of beer, a free pint or discounts on food and beer.

“Attending events with us means not only having unique beer experiences, but also receiving wonderful deals that you wouldn’t have received on your own,” Skopit said.

Crystal Poon has been going to the group’s events since it began.

“Bottle shares are fantastic because I get to try beers that I otherwise would never have given a chance to,” Poon said, “also because I could never finish an entire bottle on my own.”
