Marissa Mayer Can Report Growth at Yahoo, but Strategy Is No Clearer | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

Marissa Mayerfinally has something, however modest, to crow about.

Yahoo reported strong third-quarter financial performance on Tuesday, breaking a pattern of revenue declines and posting profits from its core operations that far exceeded Wall Street’s expectations.

And mobile, long a bête noire for the company, for the first time contributed meaningfully to its results. Ms. Mayer, Yahoo’s chief executive, told investors that mobile revenue exceeded $200 million in the quarter and she expected it to top $1.2 billion for the full year. Yahoo and its Tumblr unit together had 550 million monthly users on mobile devices during the quarter, up 17 percent from a year ago.

The politicians battling over outer space

The politicians battling over outer space | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

The US was the first country to land its astronauts on the moon in 1969

As Democrats and Republicans vie for domination of the US Senate come November's mid-term elections, two Florida politicians are vying to demonstrate who cares most about the solar system.

Gabriel Rothblatt wants to live on another planet.

The 32-year-old Democratic candidate is the son of a satellite radio pioneer, so Rothblatt grew up surrounded by cutting-edge theorists exploring possibilities at the edges of the cosmos. And he longed to be a part of it.

"I wanted to be one of the founders of human civilisation in space," he tells the BBC.

But colonies on the moon or Mars simply haven't transpired yet. And until then, Rothblatt aims to remove any political red tape stopping humans from making them a reality.

To that end, he has launched an aggressive campaign for a US House of Representatives seat in Florida's Eighth District against Republican Congressman Bill Posey - himself a former space industry employee who has spent much of his political career calling for greater extra-terrestrial investment.

The district - stretching along Florida's east coast - is home to Kennedy Space Center, which saw the launch of the first successful manned mission to the moon in 1969.

As a result, both candidates are keen to highlight their commitment to reaching for the stars.

Related Group unveils purchase of 1400 Biscayne Blvd. | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

Miami-based Related Group, expanding its ambitious development portfolio in Miami, closed on the acquisition of 1400 Biscayne Boulevard for $57.3 million.

Related plans to develop a mixed-use project with three towers, spanning nearly two million square feet of “luxury residential and prime retail” space on the 2.8-acre site that sits in front of the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.

“This location is a prime opportunity to be part of a strategic location between Brickell [and] the Design District, next to Museum Park,” Matt Allen, Related’s chief operating officer, said in a statement. “With the Arsht Center directly across the street and Pérez Art Museum Miami and the Frost Science Museum nearby, our future residents will be in the very heart of Miami’s thriving arts and culture scene.’’

The seller was Espacio USA, the U.S. arm of Immobiliaria Espacio, a Spanish real estate firm, which purchased 1400 Biscayne Center in 2010 for more than $32 million. The site currently has a low-rise office and retail building. Espacio had itself been planning a major development on the site.

Related has led the charge in Miami’s latest condo construction boom. Its SLS Brickell project began construction this year and is set to be completed in 2016. Related expects to break ground on Hyde Midtown and SLS Lux this fall, and One Paraiso, the second of four planned towers in a cluster in Edgewater, is expected to break ground in November.

In Hollywood, Related broke ground last week at Hyde Resort & Residences Hollywood.

Related said it also closed this week on the second phase of Doral View, a 360-unit apartment project, which it is doing with a joint venture partner, Rockpoint Group.

This week, The Related Group also closed on the second phase of Doral View with JV partner Rockpoint Group to develop 360 luxury residential apartment units.

The Related Group is currently developing a number of fast-selling properties between the downtown and midtown corridors, led by Carlos Rosso, President of The Related Group Condominium. SLS Brickell broke ground earlier this year and has a 2016 completion date; Hyde Midtown and SLS Lux both start construction this fall, and ONE Paraiso, the second of four planned towers within the Paraiso community, breaks ground this November. Further north, Hyde Resort & Residences Hollywood broke ground last week.

The new retirement splurge: Plastic surgery

The new retirement splurge: Plastic surgery | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

Some boomers undergo cosmetic procedures to stay competitive on the job. Plenty of others wait until the rat race is over, and view a nip and a tuck as the ultimate reward in retirement. But does it make sense, financially or medically, to get some work done after you’re done with work?

Those 55 and over accounted for a quarter of all cosmetic-procedure patients in 2013, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The total number of cosmetic procedures performed on this group—including minimally invasive treatments such as facial fillers as well as more involved surgeries—rose 4% from 2012 to 2013, to 3.8 million.

The five most common cosmetic surgical procedures in the 55-plus demographic, in descending order, were: face-lift, forehead lift, ear reshaping, hair transplantation and pectoral implants. (Among all ages, nose reshaping was the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in 2013.)

People over 50 go under the knife for all sorts of reasons, plastic surgeons report. While some are seeking a boost before re-entering the dating scene, some happily married or happily single patients want their looks to better reflect the way they feel, while others want their clothes to fit better. The common thread? “They finally have some time to focus on themselves,” especially if they’ve retired, said Dr. Larry Fan, the founder of 77 Plastic Surgery in San Francisco.

Click here to support Expenses to lead rally for science! by Peter Caramico

Click here to support Expenses to lead rally for science! by Peter Caramico | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

I'm travelling to CA to lead a rally on 10/29 for sustainable health. The group and I are advocating for higher science budgets for organizations like the National Institute of Aging (part of the NIH).

If you'd like to get involved in person. Please fill out this questionnaire . We're aiming to be everywhere.

If you'd like to get an idea of what our rallies look like. Please go here . See below to see how the money will be spent.

Recently we've seen companies like Google investing in moonshots like the California Life Company, or CaLiCo in an effort to extend the human lifespan to around 170. The reality is that by itself, this won't be enough and will place a burden on our healthcare system. With additional support from government we can work with companies like this to achieve sustainable health, or what some might refer to as indefinite lifespans/immortality. There are scientists who've trained and are training for exactly this as we speak and companies who are standing by to develop technologies and therapies to achieve affordable, sustainable health.

A Wells Fargo Employee Emailed The CEO Asking For A $10,000 Raise And He CC'd 200,000 Other Employees

A Wells Fargo Employee Emailed The CEO Asking For A $10,000 Raise And He CC'd 200,000 Other Employees | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

Portland, Oregon-based Wells Fargo branch employee Tyrel Oates emailed the bank's CEO asking for a $10,000 raise for himself and his colleagues, the Charlotte Observer reported.

He also CC'd 200,000 other Wells Fargo employees on the email to CEO John Stumpf. Talk about some chutzpah!

Oates confirmed to The Oregonian that a copy of the letter posted on Reddit was authentic.

In the letter, Oates brought up the issue of income inequality. He pointed out that Stumpf took home $19 million in compensation for 2013.

He also made a request that the company raise every employee's salary by $10,000 to "show the rest of the United States, if not the world that, yes big corporations can have a heart other than philanthropic endeavors."

"My proposal is take $3 billion dollars, just a small fraction of what Wells Fargo pulls in annually, and raise every employees annual salary by $10,000 dollars. This equates to an hourly raise about $4.71 per hour. Think, as well, of the positive publicity in a time of extreme consumer skepticism towards banks," Oates wrote.

Oates told the Charlotte Observer that he had been with Wells Fargo for about seven years. He started out making $13 per hour. Now his hourly rate is $15, the report said.

Stumpf, 60, actually comes from humble beginnings, too. He grew up on a dairy farm in Minnesota. He didn't make good grades in high school and didn't have much money, so he ended up working as a bread maker after graduation. Eventually, he got into St. Cloud University and landed a job at First Bank in St. Paul as a repossession agent. He ultimately ended up getting his MBA from the University of Minnesota.

Here's the letter [via Reddit]

The tech powering the billion-dollar camgirl industry

The tech powering the billion-dollar camgirl industry | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it
With hundreds of thousands of performers plying their wares on websites like My Free Cams and LiveJasmin, interactive webcamming is one of the most popular, not to mention lucrative, sectors of the online adult industry. As a whole, it rakes in an estimated $1 billion per year. But how easy is it to actually build a successful career as a cam model? While you might imagine that all it requires is a wireless connection, an empty bedroom, and a willingness to flash strangers online, most cam performers will tell you that the reality of the industry is a lot more complicated—and a lot more expensive—than that. - See more at: http://kernelmag.dailydot.com/issue-sections/features-issue-sections/10444/camgirl-tech-logitech-hp/#sthash.in3F36m4.dpuf
