Indonesia Earthquake: Strong Temblor In Aceh Province Kills 22 And Destroys 1,500 Buildings

Indonesia Earthquake: Strong Temblor In Aceh Province Kills 22 And Destroys 1,500 Buildings | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia -- Soldiers, police and volunteers fanned out across an earthquake-damaged region of western Indonesia on Wednesday, scouring the debris of fallen homes and landslides for possible victims of a temblor that killed at least 22 people and injured hundreds.

The magnitude-6.1 quake struck Tuesday afternoon at a depth of just 10 kilometers (6 miles) and was centered on the far western tip of Sumatra island in Aceh province.

Twelve people were killed and 70 others were injured by a landslide or collapsing buildings in Bener Meriah district, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency. He added Wednesday that the number of houses and buildings damaged in the district is still being counted.

In neighboring Central Aceh district, 10 people were killed, 140 were injured and about 1,500 houses and buildings were damaged, Nugroho said. The quake also triggered landslides and caused hundreds of people to be evacuated to 10 temporary shelters.

Where Are the Hardest Places to Live in the U.S.? - NYTimes.com | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it
Annie Lowrey writes in the Times Magazine this week about the troubles of Clay County, Ky., which by several measures is the hardest place in America to live. The Upshot came to this conclusion by looking at six data points for each county in the United States: education (percentage of residents with at least a bachelor’s degree), median household income, unemployment rate, disability rate, life expectancy and obesity. We then averaged each county’s relative rank in these categories to create an overall ranking. (We tried to include other factors, including income mobility and measures of environmental quality, but we were not able to find data sets covering all counties in the United States.)

Ferguson Seeks Rapid Repairs to Avoid Fate of Riot-Torn Cities - Bloomberg

Ferguson Seeks Rapid Repairs to Avoid Fate of Riot-Torn Cities - Bloomberg | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it
Commercial districts in Detroit, Newark and Washington were ravaged by civil unrest in the 1960s, leading to decades of economic stagnation. In Ferguson, Missouri, business owners are seeking to avert a similar fate. Even as law enforcement struggles to restore order, merchants still assessing damage from arson and looting said they’re growing anxious over how long it will take to rebuild from unrest that followed a grand jury’s decision not to charge a white police officer who shot an unarmed black 18-year-old. A volunteer group, STL Forward, recognizing the danger of inaction, has started an advertising campaign promoting commerce that features a figure personally linked to the killing. “I do not want my son’s death to be in vain,” Michael Brown Sr., father of the victim, said in a video. “I want it to lead to incredible change. Positive change. Change that makes the St. Louis region better for everyone.” Among the first steps are repairing the physical damage. Officials of the Missouri Department of Insurance met with business owners at the Ferguson Public Library yesterday to help merchants file claims. “We’ve been working off a list of businesses that we believed to have been affected and reaching out to them,” said Chris Cline, a spokesman. Localized Destruction At least a dozen buildings were burned to the ground on Nov. 24 and scores of windows were broken in the hours after a St. Louis County prosecutor announced Officer Darren Wilson wouldn’t be charged in the death of Michael Brown. While the violence has subsided, Ferguson remains on edge. Missouri Governor Jay Nixon said the police presence will be maintained through the Thanksgiving holidays. “The ramped up presence and action of the Missouri National Guard has been helpful,” Nixon said yesterday in a statement. “I will continue to monitor the situation closely to determine whether additional resources are necessary to protect public safety.” In 1967, riots in Detroit left 43 dead, 1,200 injured and more than 2,000 buildings destroyed. The violence hastened the decline of the former auto-building capital, which last year filed the largest municipal bankruptcy case in U.S. history. Civil unrest the same year in Newark, New Jersey, killed 26. And Washington riots in 1968 resulted in 12 fatalities and the burning of more than 900 stores, crippling the inner-city economy of the nation’s capital.

Supreme Court Will Hear New Challenge to Obamacare

Supreme Court Will Hear New Challenge to Obamacare | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear a high-stakes challenge to a provision of Obamacare that helps 5 million Americans pay for health insurance.

The law says that low-income Americans people who buy insurance through state exchanges qualify for a federal subsidy. But it is ambiguous about whether subsides are available for insurance purchased through the federal exchange.

An estimated 5 million Americans have insurance that way. The average premium is $80 per month and would jump to $345 per month without the subsidy.

Shooters Waterfront Revamps With All-New Look and Menu

Shooters Waterfront Revamps With All-New Look and Menu | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

Shooters Waterfrontis, in a way, a tale of Fort Lauderdale.

Forever etched into the city's inebriated memory as the place to enjoy a fantastic happy hour, a scenic dock, and poolside swimsuit contests, Shooters has decided to shed the party life and mature considerably. The restaurant, one of the Intracoastal Waterway's most popular, has turned a new leaf under the ownership of the Grateful Palate's William McIntyre and is now helmed by Meghan Leckey and her team.

Gone is the famed pool and its debauchery (moment of silence...), and in its place is a new alfresco dining deck with 300 seats that is poised to take full advantage of the skyline and waterway with its "panoramic views of the water in a distinguished, beachy-chic setting," according to a news release. Aside from the aesthetic renovations, the restaurant has hired Chef Chi Chan, a Le Cordon Bleu graduate, to remodel their lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch menus as well as luxury resort veteran interior designer Deborah Frustino to oversee the restaurant's new decor.

High-Cost Generic Drugs — Implications for Patients and Policymakers — NEJM

High-Cost Generic Drugs — Implications for Patients and Policymakers — NEJM | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

It is well known that new brand-name drugs are often expensive, but U.S. health care is also witnessing a lesser-known but growing and seemingly paradoxical phenomenon: certain older drugs, many of which are generic and not protected by patents or market exclusivity, are now also extremely expensive. Take the case of albendazole, a broad-spectrum antiparasitic medication. Albendazole was first marketed by a corporate predecessor to GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) outside the United States in 1982 and was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1996. Its patents have long since expired, but no manufacturer ever sought FDA approval for a generic version. One reason may be that the primary indications for the drug — intestinal parasites, neurocysticercosis, and hydatid disease — occur relatively rarely in the United States and usually only in disadvantaged populations such as immigrants and refugees. In late 2010, the listed average wholesale price (AWP) for albendazole was $5.92 per typical daily dose in the United States and less than $1 per typical daily dose overseas.

EIGHT YEAR OLD DEDICATES HER BIRTHDAY PARTY TO SAVING FRIENDS' WILDLIFE REHABILITATION AND EDUCATION CENTER IN THE MIAMI AREA

EIGHT YEAR OLD DEDICATES HER BIRTHDAY PARTY TO SAVING FRIENDS' WILDLIFE REHABILITATION AND EDUCATION CENTER IN THE MIAMI AREA | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

November 6, 2014 -- For 38 years Safari Edventure (www.safariedventure.com) has provided a safe-haven for wildlife brought in as rescues, were rehomed or rehabilitated. But this non-profit organization is in danger of losing its property, which is called "Farmony". They need your help to stay on the lush five acre "Farmony" they developed over the years for plants, animals and all of us to enjoy.

Seven-year old Michaela Scarano wants to celebrate her 8th birthday by helping save this local animal rehabilitation and education center. She hopes that raising awareness and money for the center will help preserve it for future generations. She, her dad Chris, and the directors of Safari Edventure, Glenn and Nicki Fried, are asking for your attendance at an all-day public event to raise awareness and money to save their animals and the haven they have provided for them.

Glenn Fried commented: "I feel honored and privileged to have the support of such a caring a compassionate child who has a true love in her heart for animals. Nicki added: "It has always been a pleasure to have had Michaela in our camp and her visits. She is an inspiration to us all."

Please do not bring a gift to the event but rather a tax deductible donation (cash, credit cards or checks made payable to Farmony, Inc.) for which a receipt will be provided. When was the last time you went to a birthday party and received a tax deduction for it? Cool, huh?

Mention Michaela's name for free admission and finger food with your donation for the event. Items will be freshly prepared by Miami Organic Specialties www.miamiorganicspecialties.com. Feel free to bring a picnic basket, pot luck food, a birthday cake or marshmallows for the evening bonfire! A day at a zoo for a family can cost anywhere between $100 to $200 but the up-close, hands-on experience you will get at Safari Edventure is unlike anything a zoo can provide!

DATE: Saturday, November 22nd from 10:00am to 10:00pm (Michaela's birthday party officially begins at 3:00pm but she will be there all day so come when convenient for you).

LOCATION: 23700 SW 142nd Avenue, Homestead, FL 33032

CONTACT: 305.238.9453 / 305.255.9453 / email: info@safariedventure.com

Please RSVP for Michaela's birthday here or just show up: http://tinyurl.com/qgosygb

Michaela also made this video for the occasion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HirRKSR1jcQ&feature=em-upload_owner

DIRECTIONS: * From US1 turn West on SW 232 ST (Silver Palm). Then left on 142 Ave. (Look for yellow wooden butterfly on palm tree on your right side at this intersection. The street sign is hidden.) * From the FL Turnpike exit at Caribbean Blvd. Turn right. At US1 turn left and follow the above directions. It is strongly suggested that you print out the directions as your GPS may not easily find this address. Avoid using apple maps.

What Is A Tweetup And How Do I Start One?

What Is A Tweetup And How Do I Start One? | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

A tweetup is the actual face-to-face meeting of Twitter users for a specific objective.

Unlike a tweet chat or a Twitter list, tweetups necessitate the physical presence of users and may be held anywhere, from coffee shops, to hotel lobbies, to restaurants, to conference rooms, etc. Attendees of these events generally have not met in person and do not actually know each other, but have already been acquainted online through the various groups or lists they follow.

Tweetups are a chance for users to meet in real life and convert 140 character engagements or conversations into actual lengthy exchanges about various topics or a specific subject. A tweetup may be organized around a particular subject, or may be arranged just to socialize, make friends and establish contacts
