How Much Should You Save for Retirement? ~ via @Time

How Much Should You Save for Retirement? ~ via @Time | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

It’s one of the toughest financial questions to answer: How much do you need to save for retirement? Save too little and you might find yourself working at McDonald's during “retirement” — or living with your son-in-law. Save too much, though, and you’ll end up sacrificing the good life today for an uncertain tomorrow.

If you listen to many financial planners (or trust most online retirement calculators), you need to replace 70% or more of your pre-retirement income in order to maintain your current lifestyle. But basing your retirement needs on income is like basing your fuel needs on the size of your car’s gas tank. What really matters is how far you have to go and what kind of gas mileage you get.

To get a better idea of how much you should save, base your projections on your current spending patterns. Your spending reflects your lifestyle; your income doesn’t.

Trucking company catches fire in SW Miami-Dade | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) - A trucking company has caught on fire in Southwest Miami-Dade and crews are working to get the situation under control.

Flames and thick smoke could be seen shooting from the business, Wednesday evening.

According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials, several trucks were on fire near the scene at Southwest 187th Avenue and 192nd Street.

Crews rushed to put out the fire with water from a canal near the scene.

The fire was initially reported to be at a medical marijuana lab, but authorities say that the fire is at the trucking company close to the facility.

A 7News viewer sent in cellphone video of the fire, showing a thick, black smoke filling the air.

Investigators said as of 10 p.m. Wednesday, no one was injured.

Woman arrested in San Francisco Muni hate crime incident

Police arrested a woman Friday accused of shoving an 81-year-old Asian woman off a San Francisco Muni platform in the city's Bayview District, calling it a hate crime.

The woman was standing on an elevated Muni platform in the 4800 block of Third Street around 8:20 a.m. on Thursday when a woman named Jacqueline Miller, 51, approached her from behind and shoved her off the platform, according to police.

Witnesses told officers that the suspect pushed the victim from the platform causing her to fall onto the roadway, hitting her head on the pavement.

There was no exchange between the two before the younger woman allegedly pushed the woman, police said.

The elderly woman was taken to a hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening, according to police.

Miller was arrested on suspicion of assault and due to the fact that she made statements that she assaulted the victim because of her ethnicity, a hate crime enhancement was also charged.

Hedge funds & other alternative investment firms flood into South Florida

Hedge funds & other alternative investment firms flood into South Florida | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

South Florida is fast becoming hedge fund heaven—a new warm-weather home for alternative investment firms and their satellite offices.

The firms are providing South Florida institutions, family offices and government officials with new options for raising capital, generating contrarian investment returns and expanding the business landscape. The AI firms also are bringing more skilled financial professionals into the region, along with the purchasing power their compensation represents.

Michael Corcelli has seen the growth firsthand as founder and president of the Florida Alternative Investment Association, which he started in 2007. “The number of firms in our association has doubled in the last three years,” he says. “And so have assets under management.”

South Florida is home to more than 200 family offices, almost 20 private equity firms and more than 50 hedge funds, according to the Newlink Group in Miami. Palm Beach County’s Business Development Board puts the numbers even higher, with an estimate of more than 300 hedge funds and private equity firms in the three-county area. Only three major alternative investment firms have relocated their headquarters offices to South Florida, but the number of satellite offices continues to climb.

Deliveryman keeps working despite being beaten by teens in Bronx

Deliveryman keeps working despite being beaten by teens in Bronx | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

A Chinese food deliveryman beaten and robbed of $150 in the Bronx by three teens said he’s scared for his safety but has no choice but to keep on working.

The heartless teens attacked 46-year-old Dao Li in a building on Walton Ave. nearly Marcy Place in Highbridge about 9:45 p.m. on Aug. 24.

“I'm scared but I must do it,” Li said Friday as he continued to make deliveries for the restaurant he owns, Happy Dragon on Walton Ave. near E. 169th St. “This is my store. I can't close it, right? I have a wife and kids. They have to eat.”

Li said one of the three teens had been targeting him for some time but Li didn’t call the police because he doesn’t speak English very well.

“Two or three times he's tried to steal my food. I don't know why,” he said. “Maybe because I'm Chinese, because I'm skinny?”

Several months ago that teen threw a glass bottle at him as he walked down a sidewalk late at night with his wife, he said.

"He was across the street with a few people,” he said. “I think it was beer (bottle). It breaks on the sidewalk in front of me and I jump back. Then we ran home."

Cops released startling surveillance video showing the teens' cruel assault on Li and asked the public’s help identifying and tracking down his assailants.

The trio peeked up a flight of stairs as they picked their places for the ambush, the video shows.

As Li walked down the stairs, a teen sporting a backpack jumped behind a larger friend in a blue shirt.
