Consumer confidence rises to 4-year high

Consumer confidence rises to 4-year high | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

Consumer confidence in October rose to its highest level in four years, boosted by improvements in the job market.
The closely watched index, which measures how Americans feel about the economy, edged higher to a reading of 72.2 from a downwardly revised 68.4 in September, according to The Conference Board, a business research firm.

It marks the highest level since February 2008, when the country was at the early stages of a long and deep recession.
The reading came in slightly higher than what economists were expecting, according to a Briefing.com consensus.
A key factor behind Americans' optimism, was the improving employment picture. The number of workers reporting that jobs were "plentiful" increased more than 2%. People who are expecting more jobs in the coming months increased to 19.2% from 18.1%.

There’s A New Café In Switzerland Where You Can Get Oral Sex With Your Coffee

There’s A New Café In Switzerland Where You Can Get Oral Sex With Your Coffee | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it
Step aside, Starbucks.

You’ve heard of happy endings at seedy underground massage parlors—now get ready for blowjobs at coffee shops. Yeah, it's a real thing.

At the end of this year, a new coffee shop, Fellatio Café, will open up in Geneva, Switzerland, where you can get a hot cup of joe, with a side of blowjob. Seriously.

The firm behind the Swiss café, Facegirl, says customers will be able to order coffee, then select a sex worker of their choice from an iPad to give them a blowjob. You sure as hell can’t do that at Starbucks.

And just how much will this sexual service set you back? 60 Swiss francs, or about $50. Plus five francs for the coffee, of course. This is a business after all. But still, not bad for a caffeinated afternoon (or morning) delight.

Facegirl's Bradley Chavet told Swiss newspaperLe Matin, that the idea for the café, which is based on similar establishments in Thailand, has been in the works for several months, and that coffee buffs can get their "orders filled" faster than they can say “large iced coffee, please."

"In five or ten minutes, it's all over,” he said, implying the ‘service’ at Fellatio Café is impeccable.

As always, critics blasted the proposal, claiming only developers would benefit from the business, but alas, prostitution is legal in Switzerland as long as the sex workers have permits, so why wouldn’t they open a café where you can get a cup of coffee with an almond croissant and an orgasm?

While there’s no exact date for the opening of the café, Chavet says it will be open for business by the end of this year. So it's something to look forward to.

Geneva sounds like a good place to warm up with a cup of coffee this winter, so you might as well start booking your tickets now.

KING: Seattle-area officers killed man wielding pen for no reason

KING: Seattle-area officers killed man wielding pen for no reason | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

Tommy Le was less than a day away from his high school graduation in Seattle when he was shot and killed there by a local deputy on the night of June 13.

If you Google his name — and read the stories about his death — you will see that the next day the local news stories spoke of a dangerous, “knife-wielding man” who police seemingly had no choice but to shoot and kill after they claimed he refused to put down his weapon.

Except Tommy Le wasn’t wielding a knife. It was an ink pen. That didn’t stop a King Country Sheriff’s Deputy from firing three shots straight into the chestand abdomen of Tommy Le.

No knife was found on his body or anywhere on the scene. He had no criminal record and no history of violence. I’d like to see that ink pen. Where I come from, ink pens and knives don’t look a whole lot alike.

Wash. state man fatally shot by deputy hours before graduation

The spokesperson for the department has said that they won’t be releasing any photos of the pen the officers claimed looked like a knife. They also won’t be releasing any body camera or dash camera footage — not because they have it and are holding it — but because their department doesn’t even have those cameras installed.

And so here we are — stuck in a position where Tommy Le can’t speak for himself and the only story we’re left with is the police narrative, which predictably perpetuates the “I feared for my life” trope.

Vietnam: My Orange Pain. Devastating consequences of the use of Agent Orange in the Vietnam War

Vietnam: My Orange Pain. Devastating consequences of the use of Agent Orange in the Vietnam War | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

During the Vietnam War, the U.S Air Force used a defoliant known as “Agent Orange” to destroy forests where Vietcong guerrilla fighters were taking cover. Use of this toxic chemical not only severely harmed the health of those immediately exposed to it, but also led to birth defects in subsequent generations. Its impact is still being felt in Vietnam, where it is estimated that around 5 million people are suffering from its damaging effects. They call it their “orange pain”.
The RTD team interviews local people who are still living with the consequences of the Vietnam War long after it ended, and an American veteran who has dedicated his life to clearing the country of mines and shells

Hedge funds & other alternative investment firms flood into South Florida

Hedge funds & other alternative investment firms flood into South Florida | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

South Florida is fast becoming hedge fund heaven—a new warm-weather home for alternative investment firms and their satellite offices.

The firms are providing South Florida institutions, family offices and government officials with new options for raising capital, generating contrarian investment returns and expanding the business landscape. The AI firms also are bringing more skilled financial professionals into the region, along with the purchasing power their compensation represents.

Michael Corcelli has seen the growth firsthand as founder and president of the Florida Alternative Investment Association, which he started in 2007. “The number of firms in our association has doubled in the last three years,” he says. “And so have assets under management.”

South Florida is home to more than 200 family offices, almost 20 private equity firms and more than 50 hedge funds, according to the Newlink Group in Miami. Palm Beach County’s Business Development Board puts the numbers even higher, with an estimate of more than 300 hedge funds and private equity firms in the three-county area. Only three major alternative investment firms have relocated their headquarters offices to South Florida, but the number of satellite offices continues to climb.

Volunteers being recruited for Chinese Lantern Festival

Volunteers being recruited for Chinese Lantern Festival | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

Chipping in a little of your time and effort this fall could score you free access to one of the most unique attractions to come to Gaston County this year.

On Wednesday to Sunday evenings from Sept. 7 through Oct. 29, Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden will break new ground by featuring its Chinese Lantern Festival. It will be an awe-inspiring display of color and shapes, serving as the garden’s largest exhibition to date, as hundreds of lanterns will fill more than 12 acres at the property in southeast Gaston County.

Putting on such a gigantic production requires manpower, and since the botanical garden is a nonprofit, it often relies on the help of volunteers to host many of its events. So in exchange for area residents giving a helping hand, the garden will be offering two complimentary tickets per volunteer to experience the lantern festival for free.

Volunteer positions will include indoor and outdoor hosts, translators, activity assistants, advance ticket support and entrance directors. All volunteers will also receive a free Chinese Lantern Festival T-shirt.

To register, volunteers must fill out an application by logging on to dsbg.org/event, then scrolling to the green “Become a Volunteer” button. You must commit to attend one training session in August. Volunteer training sessions will be offered from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21; noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23; 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24; 1:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26; and 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31.

HK under ‘one country, two systems’ key part of Chinese dream, says Xi | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

Chinese President Xi Jinping tied Hong Kong’s future under “one country, two systems” to his vision of a rejuvenated China in a speech on Saturday marking the 20th anniversary of the city’s handover to Beijing.

On the last morning of his three-day visit – his first as president – Xi told Hongkongers that the city had “joined the remarkable journey towards the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation” since its return to China.

Xi opened his speech by making historical reference to the fall of Hong Kong to British rule after the first opium war in the mid 19th century – seen as the symbolic beginning of China’s 100 years of decline and humiliation.

This company works with immigrant chefs to deliver home-cooked meals | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

Noobtsaa Philip Vang was a hungry graduate student at Georgetown University when he came up with the idea for “Foodhini,” a food delivery service that works with immigrant chefs.

As the son of two Hmong refugees, Vang had grown up eating a variety of warm and fulfilling home cooking. His mother, in particular, is an amazing cook, Vang told NBC News, and within his first month at business school, he found himself hungry for something homemade.

“I just wanted to find like a grandma or an auntie in the neighborhood that made some type of Southeast Asian cooking,” Vang said. “I came from Minnesota to Georgetown for grad school, and I was just really missing some of my mom's home cooking.”
