Women Generally Make Better Investors than Men. Embrace Your Fem Side!

Women Generally Make Better Investors than Men. Embrace Your Fem Side! | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

Easy boys … It’s not what you are thinking!

What I mean is that women are generally more level headed, calculating and conservative that men are when it comes to money.

Not to mention, they can deal with stress a lot better that we can. Just look around and see if you can juggle as many things (Successfully that is!) at once that your Mom or your wife can.

I got inspired to write about this after I bumped into this post:  “Why you should invest like a girl”

As it turns out, it’s not. A growing body of research shows that men are more emotional than women in ways that can be detrimental to their success as investors — and women generally make better money managers, even in the highest-risk folds of the industry.

In 2001, researchers at the University of California, Davis analyzed the stock investments of 35,000 households and found that men traded 45 percent more than women, racking up more transaction costs and netting returns that were 1.4 percent lower. The numbers were even more pronounced for single men and women: 67 percent more trading and 2.3 percent less in returns.

In many ways, our overconfidence hurts our bottom line when it comes to investing. I know that’s a hard pill to swallow but keep reading boys!

The latest data comes from Vanguard, the mutual fund company. Among 2.7 million people with I.R.A.’s at the company, it found that during the financial crisis of 2008 and 2009, men were much more likely than women to sell their shares at stock market lows. Those sales presumably meant big losses — and missing the start of the market rally that began a year ago.

Male investors, as a group, appear to be overconfident, said John Ameriks, head of Vanguard Investment Counseling and Research and a co-author of the study. “There’s been a lot of academic research suggesting that men think they know what they’re doing, even when they really don’t know what they’re doing,” he said.

Women, on the other hand, appear more likely to acknowledge when they don’t know something — like the direction of the stock market or of the price of a stock or a bond. (read more)

Women put safety first. They are also more inclined than men to wear seat belts, avoid cigarette smoking, floss and brush their teeth and get their blood pressure checked. They even have been shown to be 40% less prone than men to run yellow traffic lights. Not to mention their innate ability to deal with stress and pressure.

In general they are also less prone to attribute success or failure to event outside of themselves like fate or luck.

When Women Come Together – The Power of the SASSY Revolution! « DR Elizabeth King

When Women Come Together – The Power of the SASSY Revolution! « DR Elizabeth King | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

Women have always been a powerful driving force across the globe. When we are able to put aside our differences and embrace
intersectionality, we become a force to be reckoned with! The concept of women standing up for and with other women isn’t new. History is full of fearless, determined, compassionate women who reached out to others around them to accomplish mighty things.

Women have power in solidarity. While the Amazons may be only a story, there’s a reason why the idea is so appealing – women as self-sufficient and powerful beings, relying on each other in order to live fulfilled, independent lives. While certainly much of the mythos surrounding the “tribe of warrior women” is fictitious, the ideal of being stronger together lives on.

However, verifiable ancient and recent history has plenty of women who bonded together to achieve great things:

  • Harriet Tubman engineered the escape of hundreds of slaves (many of them women) by – working in conjunction with others (many also women) on the Underground Railroad.
  • The “iron jawed angels” of the women’s suffrage movement ultimately gained women the right to vote.
  • 40 years ago women in Iceland banded together and went on strike to fight gender inequality – the country ground to a halt and the gender pay gap in Iceland is now one of the smallest in the word.
  • The famous actress Tippi Hedren (well known for her role in Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds”) changed the face of Hollywood’s nail salon industry by empowering female Vietnamese refugees to learn the trade and open their own businesses.
  • Malala Yousafzai became one of the strongest global advocates for the education of young girls in the third world – even after being shot in the head.
  • Women dairy farmers in Missouri and Pennsylvania are banding together to make each other’s lives easier and find support in a traditional male field.
  • Six lawyers banded together to create an all-woman firm that makes sure all of the women’s needs are met, and that they can balance family and work.

Countless feminists, suffragettes, trailblazers and more have changed the face of the world. Kiva, one of the world’s fastest growing organizations, allows people to give loans to people in other countries – over 82% of them go to women, and the lenders are also a female majority. Women helping other women works!

It’s should be no surprise that an enormous part of being SASSY is about giving back and helping other women be stronger, happier, braver, healthier, and more fulfilled. When women join hands and goals with other women, they become an unstoppable force.

Ashley Madison Blasted Over Fake Security Award

Ashley Madison Blasted Over Fake Security Award | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

How not to do data security

If a company’s main product is discreet sexual services, it should probably lock down its customer data good and tight. Ashley Madison, a website for adultery, took a different approach: it employed terrible safeguards, and sought instead to reassure users by posting a fake icon called “trusted security award” on its website.

Those are the conclusions of a damning report from Canadian and Australian privacy regulators, who have been investigating Ashley Madison over a calamitous data breach that occurred last year. The breach saw hackers steal the names and emails of 36 million Ashley Madison members, and then post them publicly as part of an apparent blackmail campaign.

The privacy report, released on Tuesday, described a host of security failings, while pointing Ashley Madison knew exactly how important discretion and secrecy was to its users.

Specific security failings included leaving an important password on a shared Google Drive, and storing encryption keys and passwords in plain text. And then there’s the “award.”

“Finally, with respect to transparency, investigators found that at the time of the breach, the home page of the Ashley Madison website included various trustmarks suggesting a high level of security, including a medal icon labelled “trusted security award,” says a release related to the report.

A spokesperson for Ashley Madison pointed to a company blog post about the report. In the post, Ashley Madison’s new CEO explains the company is investing in new security measures as part of a process to rebuild consumer trust.

Two 'Survivor' castaways from South Florida | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

CBS's "Survivor" reality series returns Sept. 21 for its 33rd season with new twists and 20 adventurous castaways. And two of them are from South Florida.

They are Fort Lauderdale real estate agent Justin "Jay" Starrett, 27, and Sugarloaf Key boat mechanic Paul Wachter, 52.

As in recent years, the show will follow a theme this season: tribes based on generations.

Producers have cast 10 millennials and 10 Generation Xers who will have to outsmart one another to capture the top prize: $1 million and bragging rights of being the ultimate survivor. Millennials are described as the largest living generational group today by the Pew Research Center and these young adults are generally defined as being between ages 18 to 34.

US to end federal use of private prisons

US to end federal use of private prisons | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

In many ways, we have the global attention Bernie Sanders brought to the private prison industry to thank.  He pointed out the failings of allowing private companies to profit off of imprisonment, blatantly stating that "we cannot fix our criminal justice system if corporations are allowed to profit from mass incarceration".
He's right and the US Justice department agrees.  "They do not save substantially on costs and ... they do not maintain the same level of safety and security," Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates said explaining the decision.
Over the next five years, contracts with 13 private prisons will be reviewed and and allowed to expire.  Stock values of private prisons dropped sharply after the decision was made public, with one company, Corrections Corp of America, dropping almost 50%.

This comes after an Inspector General's report released this month found that private prisons saw higher rates of violent incidents and rule infractions compared to state-run prisons.
After the decision, Sanders made a public statement, referring to the move as "an important step in the right direction", and that it is "an international embarrassment that we put more people behind bars than any other country on Earth... due in large part to private prisons".
Things are changing, Bernie.

The Top 3 Reasons Businesses are Successful « DR Elizabeth King

The Top 3 Reasons Businesses are Successful « DR Elizabeth King | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

We are very clear that the key to our success is having the right tribe behind you. In every business, finding,
training and retaining the best people to be part of our team is essential.   I always say “you can teach a skill, but you can’t teach personality traits”.  This is why when we are looking to fill any position in our organization, we not only look for skills, we look for people that embrace our message of empowerment and leadership whole-heartedly. They must be altruistic, positive-minded, creative, heart-centered and a team player.

After you recruit the right people, then the next step is to teach and mentor them so they can be part of the culture that makes your organization unique.  In SSL, we are sticklers about this because we need to ensure that our message and member experience is consistent in every SASSY community across the globe. Whether you are a paid staff, a volunteer or a member of SSL, everyone understands that it is their responsibility for creating a sense of belonging for all. This is paramount to our success and a true testimony to the type of people we attract.

Product

Our product is to provide first-class, supportive, effective and unique experiences that teach women the tools for self-growth.  Our message is for women to put their oxygen mask on first, by nurturing their body, mind and spirit. We are in the business of empowering and inspiring women to be their authentic self and go after their dreams.

 Process

We take our mission to empower women to live a healthy, happy, balanced and purposeful life very seriously. The key factors to making sure that you are delivering the product that you promise to your customer is having a blue print, accountability and the right team in place.

As the Chief Inspiration Officer, I spend a lot of time designing and creating the vision for the different events, but it takes a lot of people working together to make it happen.  There are so many moving parts that go on behind the scene. Every event that we produce is a collaborative effort. The old saying “it takes a village” could not be more true here.

I leave all ego aside when it comes to developing the process.  I rely on the experts in different fields to help me bring my vision to life.  I think this is one of the hardest things to do for most entrepreneurs.  I get it.  It may feel like you are turning over your baby to a stranger.  But here is the deal, one day your baby is not going to be a baby any more.  They grow up and go out on their own.  What you hope you have done as a parent, is teach them how to be independent so they are successful. It is the same thing with your business.  After you have put together the people that believe in your mission, and if your product is quality, it’s time to let go and let others complete the process.  That’s how you scale and grow.

Putting it All Together

I am absolutely convinced that the growth that SSL is experiencing is because of the people, product and process.  We work hard every day to make sure that we are ALL in alignment with our mission and vision.  Please don’t get me wrong, we have our share of growing pains, but at the end of the day, what counts is what women walk away with after attending our events.  The surveys continue to reaffirm that we are living up to our company promise. That to me is priceless.

Why Coach will Be Stocked In Fewer Department Stores

Why Coach will Be Stocked In Fewer Department Stores | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

About 250 department stores no longer will be selling Coach purses, handbags.

Coach will soon pull the company’s handbags and leather goods out of about 250 department stores across North America, a move away from discounting that has hurt the fashion brand’s luxury perception with shoppers.

On Tuesday, Coach  COH -0.13%  executives said that in the current fiscal year 2017, the handbag, accessories and leather-goods maker would remove its products from about 25% of the roughly 1,000 wholesale locations where it currently sells its goods across the U.S. and Canada. The company also intends to reduce the markdowns that Coach will allow department stores to take in that channel, citing the high level of promotions currently embraced by that segment of retail.

“While we understand that customers may use department stores for trial and shopping across brands, the high level of promotional impressions created negatively impacts our long-term brand health,” Chief Executive Victor Luis told analysts during a presentation.

Mylan CEO on EpiPens: The system rewards higher prices

Mylan CEO on EpiPens: The system rewards higher prices | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

Price increases on lifesaving EpiPens have parents outraged — but the CEO of the company that makes them said no one's more frustrated than she, pointing to other players in an "outdated" health-care system.

"The system incentivizes higher prices," Mylan CEO Heather Bresch told CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Thursday.

The price of EpiPens, a lifesaving medication and delivery system for people with severe allergies, has increased more than 400 percent in the past decade.

The price hikes have gotten national scrutiny. Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton called the increases "outrageous," saying they put "profits ahead of patients." Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has written Mylan asking how EpiPen's prices were determined.

"No one's more frustrated than me," Bresch said. "My frustration is, the list price is $608. There is a system. I laid out that there are four or five hands that the product touches, and companies that it goes through before it ever gets to that patient at the counter. Everyone should be frustrated. I'm hoping that this is an inflection point for this country."

Mylan responded on Thursday by expanding already existing programsfor patients who are facing higher out-of-pocket costs.

Native American nations unite to protest proposed North Dakota pipeline

Native American nations unite to protest proposed North Dakota pipeline | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it
Between 200 and 400 Native Americans have continued to protest the Dakota Access pipeline, a $3.78 billion project that aims to see a pipeline constructed across four states in the central United States.
Members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe have had restraining orders filed against them and some were even arrested, including tribe chief, David Archambault II.  “We don't want this black snake within our Treaty boundaries," he reportedly told Indian Country Today.

Members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe believe that the proposed 1,100 mile long pipeline would endanger the environment, including the lakes and rivers it would pass under.

“They’re going under the river 500 yards from my son’s grave, my father’s grave, my aunt who I buried last week,” said Ladonna Allard, a member of the Standing Rock nation and the closest landowner to the proposed pipeline. “I really love my land, and if that pipeline breaks everything is gone.”
The pipeline is designed to carry 570,000 barrels of crude oil per day from the Bakken/Three Forks formations in North Dakota to a terminus near Patoka, Illinois, crossing the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Illinois.

The protest comes months after the Keystone XL pipeline, a similar pipeline in length, was shut down by public pressure. in November of 2015.

Meet Vietnam’s Google Map Makers

Meet Vietnam’s Google Map Makers | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

A group of Vietnamese travel enthusiasts, hailing from all walks of life, have joined together to help complete the Google Map of Vietnam, free of charge to the technology giant.

The 15-member Google Map Maker team in Vietnam is entrusted by Google to approve and deny requests for new locations in the Southeast Asian country, while consistently updating sites and improving the map’s quality.

The ‘mappers’ include an engineer, a doctor in physics, a project manager, a university lecturer, a director of a brewery business, a former soldier, a miner, and other citizens selected for their dedication to improving the map’s thoroughness in Vietnam.

“We all started off as mischievous spammers who made random requests to the Google Maps site just for fun,” Le Bach, a 36-year-old from Hanoi, the leader of the map making team, said.

“We later became aware that making accurate requests would help improve the service for anyone in Vietnam and make it easier for users to reach their destinations,” he continued.

After studying the English tutorial, Bach began requesting new sites be added to Vietnam’s map in 2010 and was authorized by Google, with the approval of local recommendations, five years later.

“The team members are trying to complete the map and have translated all guidance materials into Vietnamese to help locals make their own contributions by requesting that new locations be added,” the leader stated.

Pham Van Manh, a 26-year-old miner and one of the map makers, stated that he began using the mapping service in 2011 and was granted the privilege to verify requests in 2015.

“It has become a habit for me to log on to the site on a daily basis,” Manh affirmed.

The ice bucket challenge has funded a huge breakthrough in ALS research

The ice bucket challenge has funded a huge breakthrough in ALS research | Business News & Finance | Scoop.it

What started as an internet video, someone, somewhere, dumping ice water on their head to bring attention to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), quickly became a global phenomenon.  Once picked up by celebrities, the concept flourished and, in 2014, the ice bucket challenge went viral.
Two years later, we see the efforts begin to pay off.  A discovery has been made toward the prevention of a kind of ALS.
More than 80 researchers across 11 countries began to collaborate, thanks to the funds provided by the ice bucket challenges which almost always pointed people toward a donation.  The researchers were able to locate a risk gene associated with ALS called NEK1.  By locating this risk gene, they believe they can treat this for of ALS and even prevent it before it begins.
“Global collaboration among scientists, which was really made possible by ALS Ice Bucket Challenge donations, led to this important discovery,” John Landers, lead author of the study and member of the University of Massachusetts’ Medical School, said in a statement. “It is a prime example of the success that can come from the combined efforts of so many people, all dedicated to finding the causes of ALS.”
The ice bucket challenge was dismissed by many as a goof.  It turns out that we can have fun and still fix things.
