Google to buy more wind power for Finnish data center | GigaOM Clean Tech

Google to buy more wind power for Finnish data center | GigaOM Clean Tech | Business News | Scoop.it

Google announced on Wednesday that it plans to buy wind power from four new wind farms that will be built near its data center in Hamina, Finland. The new wind farms will be built by developer Eolus Vind in Southern Sweden starting in 2015.

The additional wind power comes on top of what Google announced last year, that it planned to buy wind power from one large (72 MW) wind farm in Northern Sweden, to be built and operated by Swedish wind farm developer O2 in 2015. The new wind capacity announced today would add another 59 MW, and use 29 wind turbines.

Google’s Finnish data center was already interesting in that it uses the cold seas for cooling. Google built the data center out of a former paper mill in 2009 and the building’s massive quarter-mile long seawater tunnels push water up into the building to cool the data center.

Google has aggressively been buying and investing in clean power across the globe to power its energy-hungry data centers.
