Performance reviews at troubled VA showed no bad senior managers
Russell Schumacher's insight:

MBO programs are typically designed to reward performance “above and beyond.”  The 14-day waiting period performance target was never exceeded, let alone met – 2 month waiting periods were the norm.  New data shows the numbers are worse than previously thought: the earlier figure of 13,000 grew to 43,000 vets who waited more than 120 days for an appointment.   Serving the veterans became secondary to swizzling the numbers in order to qualify for bonus payments.  Senior management set the culture – all 470 senior managers received ratings of fully successful or better, and 78% of them qualified for incentive pay as delays increased.  A standout example of leadership gone bad.

For BYOD Best Practices, Secure Data, Not Devices

For BYOD Best Practices, Secure Data, Not Devices | Business Leadership | Scoop.it
IT organizations are justifiably concerned about the security risks inherent in bringing your own device (BYOD). Many are turning to mobile device management (MDM) products and services to address the problem. But a number of mobile security vendors believe organizations are focusing the device when they should be focusing on the data.
Russell Schumacher's insight:

The BYOD mobile dilemma rages on in IT departments, and more sleep is lost over potential breaches. As the author points out – trying to restrict user choices is a no-win game, so you have to learn to adapt, protect the data, and apply the KISS principle if you hope to keep users happy.  MAM is an approach that fits that model – and still allows users freedom to use their device as they expect they should be able to use their device.

How To Say “This Is Crap” In Different Cultures | Business Leadership | Scoop.it
Different cultures qualify feedback differently.
Russell Schumacher's insight:

A good, quick read for anyone who has worked with, or for, foreign enterprises.  As was often joked when I worked for an overseas telecommunications firm: improving communications is our business – and we prove every business day how much we need improved communications.   The world may be flat, as the popular book title says, when it comes to integrated business ecosystems.  However, the subtleties of culture run deep, and it is no easy task to remember all the various differences when attempting to clearly state our intentions or opinions along with the underlying facts.

How to Recover From an Epic Fail

How to Recover From an Epic Fail | Business Leadership | Scoop.it
A step-by-step method for dealing with--and overcoming--a huge failure in your life or career.
Russell Schumacher's insight:

A nicely done, concise reminder for how to come back from the brink of an epic failure.  The key item, from my perspective:  recommitting to an epic success in your next at-bat.  If you have doubt and negative feelings – it’s a cause for pause.  Regroup, re-swizzle that “next big idea,” and rethink everything before you charge ahead.  Keep in mind that walking away from the current idea and starting in on another – that is always an option.
