2016 Presidential Election Polls Analysis | Business Intelligence Insights | Scoop.it

Perhaps inevitable, there's just too much interesting data out there around the U.S. 2016 Presidential Election. One of the key narratives coming out of this year's U.S. Presidential Election is that "the polls were wrong". As with any generally accepted narrative, let's see what the data says. Were all of the polls wrong? A majority wrong? How wrong were the polls? Were different types of polls more accurate than others? Fear not, this data story answers those questions and many more! Find out the poll "winners" and "losers". Filter slice and dice by state or general election polls or by individual polling organizations. Find out if all polls are created equal. An Analysis of Ohio's Primary and Secondary Education

An Analysis of Ohio's Primary and Secondary Education | Business Intelligence Insights | Scoop.it

About a month ago, I was at a wedding reception for my niece, Wendy; the last of the triplets to get married. Wendy is the daughter of my oldest sister Laurie, who recently became a superintendent of a school district in Ohio. While I was catching up with my family, I mentioned the work I have been doing with Microsoft's Power BI and made the offer that if anyone had some data that they wanted me to wrangle and analyze that they should ship it my way. One of the most interesting parts of my job is getting to analyze new sets of data and try to derive insights from them. Well, my sister Laurie actually took me up on the offer, she always was the smart one. I just recently published my analysis here on the Power BI Community website. This is the story of how that report came together and some interesting things I observed along the way.

Balancing Professionalism, Community Involvement and Social Responsibility

Balancing Professionalism, Community Involvement and Social Responsibility | Business Intelligence Insights | Scoop.it

From the very beginning of becoming a working professional, I was indoctrinated into the following mantra:

"Don't talk about religion and politics at work."

Good, solid advice that has been pretty easy to follow...until relatively recently. The problem I have found is that as one grows in expertise and begins to become involved in more professional communities and online social interactions, it becomes harder and harder to distinguish work from one's personal, "social" life.

Why the Ohio Department of Education is Failing Schools

Why the Ohio Department of Education is Failing Schools | Business Intelligence Insights | Scoop.it

The Ohio Department of Education is failing schools. I mean this both literally and figuratively. In a literal sense, one only needs to look at the first page of my report on Ohio Primary and Secondary Education Performance and see that, as a whole, school districts in Ohio have five “D's” on their report card. However, a deeper look into these numbers indicates that, figuratively, the Ohio Department of Education is failing schools by using essentially worthless and misleading metrics, leading to the misallocation of efforts and funds for educational improvement. And by failing schools in this way, the Ohio Department of Education is also failing the tax payers of Ohio and, ultimately, those tax payers’ children.

Greg Deckler's insight:

This article is a continuation of my analysis of the Ohio Department of Education's Report Card system. My original article on this topic can be found here.

The longer it takes to create complete and useful reports, the older the data in them becomes and the greater the chance it is invalid.
