Daniel Watson's insight:

A lot has been written in recent times on the subject of employee engagement, and business owners generally don't have the time to digest all the nuances embedded in the copious quantity of information available, so the essence of what is important is of more use to the average business owner.

Simply distilling  the information available relating to improving employee engagement levels, does not provide any form of guidance as to what to prioritise to make an earlier difference, therefore a different approach is needed.

This excellent article by a practicing global director of employee engagement, suggests that by connecting the brand and employees a business owner can make meaningful progress towards improving employee engagement levels, and it outlines the five areas of focus that are key steps to making this happen sooner rather than later.

Here's a comprehensive but palatable guide to writing a business plan. You will find links to examples and additional information. It's worth a read if you want to start a business. However, I wouldn't recommend developing a business plan in a vacuum, if you've never tried to do one before. Since this is one of the most important foundational steps you can take, it's worth investing the time in a coach that can challenge your thinking.

John Norman's curator insight, January 9, 8:06 PM

This must be quite a problem for some businesses who really have no IT knowledge within their organizations. I believe they should do a yearly risk review with respect their current IT setup and what the latest trends are. This is best done by someone who does not have a vested interest in the solution being offered. The assessment should aim to strike a pragmatic balance and  include assessment for disaster recovery scenarios, current data integrity practices and standardization of business processes ahead  having the most cutting edge technology. Getting those ducks lined up will dictate the direction the company should be heading. If you can answer the question "If we have to move out of these premises at short notice how long before we are back in business and serving our client?" with a positive response acceptable to your CEO, then you have taken the first steps towards "IT Independence". Think twice , act once.
