UK accused of rigging market against renewable energy

UK accused of rigging market against renewable energy | Business Energy | Scoop.it

Dale Vince, a pioneer of the UK renewable energy industry and founder of green energy company Ecotricity, has accused the British government of corrupting the market in an attempt to scupper green energy in favour of fossil fuels and nuclear power.

The criticism comes as RenewableUK, the industry’s trade association, announced that 25.3% of the country’s electricity was produced by green energy sources in the second quarter of this year – more than coal (20.5%) and nuclear power (21.5%).

Microsoft buys more green energy than Google and Apple combined | Business Energy | Scoop.it
Over the past few years the negative effects of CO2 in the atmosphere and global warming have become common topics of discussion, and so has the technology that plays a role in reducing emissions, such as electric vehicles and smart devices in homes and offices that reduce energy consumption. Solar power to thrive without subsidies in UK by 2020

Solar power to thrive without subsidies in UK by 2020 | Business Energy | Scoop.it
THEMA1, a think tank in Berlin, has announced that Britain will have a thriving solar power sector without the need for subsidies by 2020, based on the falling cost of parts and vast improvements in the supply chain in the industry.

Using evidence from the German market, such as price signals and business activity, the report found that within the next decade large scale solar farms, commercial rooftop systems, and even residential rooftop systems would be affordable without government help.

Last month, German energy giant E.ON announced that due to the falling cost of the technology it was switching out the fossil fuel half of its business and converting to solar and wind production instead.

The report claims that this move will have a significant effect on the German energy market and predicts a similar occurrence in the UK sometime soon.

Yesterdays Laptop Battery or Tomorrow’s Power Source

Yesterdays Laptop Battery or Tomorrow’s Power Source | Business Energy | Scoop.it
Anyone with a laptop more than a year old, knows that the battery in most units can barely run Microsoft Excel and a web browser for than 40 mins without demanding a charge – so it might come as a surprise to find out that most old laptop batteries could soon be powering communities in the developing world.

Computer hardware giants IBM have this week released a study that says old lithium-ion batteries such as those found in laptop computers could have enough life in them to power homes in rural slums.

The study found that 70% of laptop batteries tested were capable of keeping an LED light array on in a home for as much as 4 hours per day for an entire year.

Diesel farm boom and UK energy subsidies

Diesel farm boom and UK energy subsidies | Business Energy | Scoop.it
It has been discovered that subsidies being granted on household energy bills have caused a boom in polluting “diesel farms” across the UK so the grid can meet periods of high electricity demand. One programme for the National Grid has almost a quarter of Britain's back-up power provided by tiny fossil fuel power stations – some of which have been built on what was previously farmland by opportunistic entrepreneurs. When there is a surge in demand for power, for example during large sporting events such as the World Cup or Wimbledon, the mini-power stations are brought online by grid managers. In the next few weeks the grid is going to offer, through auction, a new lot of subsidies for diesel farms in order to ensure that the lights never go out across the country. However, the Department of Energy and Climate Change (Decc), the grid, and the many companies involved with the process have been reluctant to divulge any information about this shadowy new industry. Many experts admit
