This SlideShare never mentions stories, but believe me -- the questions posed here will definitely spark stories in your prospects, and stories are exactly what you need. 


Why? Because they are the richest form for finding out your customer's pain points. As we all know, this is a critical ingredient for making a sale.


I particularly like how the first few slides make the point that most prospects are numb to their pain. As the author (Juliana Crispo) of this post shares, sales happen when that pain is felt. Hence the questions that will evoke stories.


Write these questions down and keep them handy for when you are chatting with potential customers. I think it will make a world of difference.

This is brilliant! And makes perfect sense. We think in stories. We talk in stories. We organize our lives as narratives. But I hadn't thought about how to apply what we know about narrative to managing business leads. But "Duh!" It's a no-brainer.


So Marketo.com came up with this fab infographic that brings lead nurturing into a narrative arc, and applies story elements to their lead tracking model to make it stick.


Thanks Marketo! I hope all you readers get a kick out of this, and apply this model to gain more business.

Well, that's a good point... if the leaders (or wannabes) are bad at something it is exactly the real listening... they have their vision, mission, drives, they run ahead and it's not sure that (informally, in the reality) there is still anybody behind them, following them... of course, there are other factors, en première lieux the monthly salary, the security and the difficulty to find another better place which help him forget to ask after whether the others following him are really on his intellectual, passionate bandwagon or in mind they are searching for the alternatives which undermines gravely him/her ambition to achieve the so well-pondered - and never really shared and confirmed - goals.... yeahhhh, listening of stories, it's perhaps even more important than telling them... ca va de soi that it worth something if  one understands the message, true story behind the story and can effectively use that for developing, bettering the cooperation, the alignment, the engagement and the trajectoire os the common pursuit of the goals...

However, in the Age of Now this model seems out of touch with the expectations of empowered consumers. Very interesting (and highly relevant to the helping professions such as coaching...) move from the original 4Ps of marketing (the right Product, in the right Place, at the right Price, supported by the right Promotion) to the new 4Ps:

Purpose (what your business stands for),

Passion (all about leveraging the power of your people to build your brand, see Empowerment...), 

Participation (companies are looking for partners with the same values whom they can work with to make a difference and further their reach)

Profit (self-explanatory...)

 

Now, this is not a gobbledygook, these are real elements and here also appears the unavoidable need for a passionate, involved, engaged, aligned and empowered staff... do you understand the importance of this? It is a free advertisement for the helping professions, guys...

Here in San Diego we are in the midst of Comic-Con and super-heroes abound. I've donned my super-girl costume and am happily immersed in X-men movies. 


And just in the nick of time, my Twitter buddy Os @ICGJ_IDEATION sent me this link to an article written by Maggie Patterson. I jumped up and now with joy, because despite my supergirl powers and love of action heroes, the hero's journey leaves a lot to be desired in business storytelling.


And this is exactly what Patterson is saying, too. I really like her twist on the hero's journey and how you can turn the stages of the journey into separate stories. I also like her take on why the hero's journey is so limiting.


I usually take a different path than Patterson does, though. For me, when we are stuck in the hero's journey, we miss other critical narratives businesses need to tell like community stories, origin stories, this is how it's done stories, etc.


Patterson also has a free guide to download, which I checked out. It's pretty good. My only quibble is that the questions posed in the document will mostly get you opinions and descriptions. You'll still have to dig for the stories.


Don't be anti-hero -- just augment your story list. Read the article for more insights and download the guide. 


OK -- this supergirl is heading back to my X-men marathon and watching all the Comic-Con fans running around downtown! Have fun...

This is a terrific 4.22 minute video by Beth Comstock at General Electric (GE) explaining how and why they do storytelling. GE does a masterful job at business storytelling and are a great example to follow.


GE has their heads on straight about what makes an effective business story, which Comstock goes over here. Watch this video and take notes on what they are doing. Then do the same for an awesome 2015.

Most CEOs are not inspiring. After years of working with leaders in business, it's hard to come to any other conclusion.

 

The 5 mistakes listed here are right on -- I experience them all the time when working with my coaching clients.

 

Number 4 is -- CEOs don't tell stories. That's for sure.

Number 5 is -- CEO's reading speeches instead of talking authentically with their audiences.

Number 3 is -- they are too stiff (that comes from not telling stories or not knowing how to tell stories)

Number 2 is -- they don't write their own material. No one can write your personal stories for you, BTW.

Number 1 is -- CEOs are not conveying a vision. Hey, we want to be inspired!

 

Well, for sure many business people of all types suffer from the same mistakes. So what to do? Find the stories you are passionate about telling, learn to tell them well and authentically, leave the notes at home, and please -- don't practice in front of a mirror! That's the kiss of death.
