Sidestepping four common mistakes can help companies develop stronger and more capable leaders, save time and money, and boost morale. A McKinsey Quarterly article.

Via Marty Koenig
Marie Clement's insight:

Point 3 is one I've come across when working in a marketing capacity for numerous companies over the years.  People who are involved in any type of development programme have to buy into it and more importantly be willing to implement the material they learn.

Marie Clement's insight:

Speaking in “I” statements — placing the focus or blame on yourself (e.g., “What can I do to help you accomplish your tasks on time?” versus “You’re always late on deadlines.”) is less confrontrational and won't put people on the defensive as easily.  Really like this approach

How to Succeed in Business Without Knowing a Thing | Switch and Shift

How to Succeed in Business Without Knowing a Thing | Switch and Shift | Business | Scoop.it
I hate business. Perhaps not the ideal, but what it has come to embody and represent. Though, my dislike doesn’t stem from the pursuit of profit. I don’t believe that money is the root of all evil. No, my dislike, and even sometimes disgust, comes from the all too common pursuit of profit over doing what’s right. My conviction that I would never partake in this practice has led me down what some would consider an unusual path.
Marie Clement's insight:

I think this is a little misleading as "without knowing a thing" implies you get up, decide on an idea then off you go!  The author obviously knows his specialist areas and how to do a great job with customers.  Interesting article anyway and I love this Steve Jobs quote he used: “When you’re a carpenter making a beautiful chest of drawers, you’re not going to use a piece of plywood on the back, even though it faces the wall and nobody will ever see it. You’ll know it’s there so you’re going to use a beautiful piece of wood on the back.”

Why You Must Lie On Job Interviews And What You Must Lie About

Why You Must Lie On Job Interviews And What You Must Lie About | Business | Scoop.it
Marie Clement's insight:

This is so true on so many levels.  The traditional interview/selection process is set on measuring people against criteria, ticking boxes and being able to say this stacks up on paper.  Humans don't work like that and if you are too rigid you miss so many good "maybe"'s who would never get a chance to prove themselves to you.  When we are recruiting we always ask the final 2 to come in and work with us for a day and see how they get on - much easier to teach someone skills than attitude!

Taking Payments Online | Do You Care About Your Customers? | Veronica Pullen | Business | Scoop.it
I love the freedom of being able to sell information products and services remotely, and the ease of taking payments online. I equally love the ease of buying pretty much anything I need online too. But there is one aspect of taking payments online that a lot of expert businesses are falling short on – and that’s the nitty gritty of sending invoices. It is SO frustrating! Ok, so after having a l’il rant about this on Facebook (as you do *cough*!) I’ve come to realise that my frustration is proba
Marie Clement's insight:

The Top-10 Characteristics of Lousy Leaders

The Top-10 Characteristics of Lousy Leaders | Business | Scoop.it
If you look at the major news stories in business, politics, diplomacy, whatever, it’s pretty hard to miss that most of the crises we face are crises of leadership. Marie Clement's insight:

Often lousy leaders are so because they have never had the right type of training or role models themselves - apart from those on a power trip and that's a totally different story!  It's interesting when you read this article that all of these characteristics can be undone and re-learned if people are willing to invest the time.
