The Government

The Government | Burned Alive | Scoop.it
stefania's insight:

This is a Symbol of the Palestian Government. I chose this picture because in my story the government plays a big role. They site back and let woman get degraded and killed, and do nothing about it.

stefania's insight:

In the Article "The Law,Afgan 'Honor Killings' of Women Continue" they describe the story of a 8-year-old runaway named Amina. She had ran away to avoid marrying a man her family had forcibly betrothed her to, and agreed to return only after her family had signed guarantees that she would not be harmed. When he family picked her up, she never made it home because her family car was ambushed. She was dragged out of her car and gun down by the gunmen. She was one of many who were killed by a honor killing. The authorities are suspicion that, Amina killing was staged by her own family. Amina mother was worried enough that she called Amina several times during her long car trip home. She last reached her at 8 p.m. on April 21. ''She told me she was all right and they were still driving,'' Ms. Atifi said. Around 10 p.m. her cellphone no longer answered. The next day, called by Ms. Atifi, the young woman's brother said that nine masked men had stopped the car, dragged his sister away and shot her to death. Her family did not seem concerned enough to report the crime, until the women's ministry did.

My story Burned Alive is much like the article I have just read. In Burned Alive, Souad is a victim of attempted Honor Killing by her brother. Even tho my story takes place in Palestine and this article take place in Afganistain, they are very alike. Both women betrayed by love, with no control of there life. These two culture are very much alike when it comes to the "unwritten" laws of the people. You find that love, family, and the persue of happiness means nothing if you dont follow the unwriitten laws. You can see that the men are the more dominant people.

stefania's insight:

Burned alive is the story of a girl named Souad, who was born and raised in Palestine. She is a innocent girl who was looking for love, like any other girl in this culture. Most Palestinens get married at a young age, and that's what Souad hope for. There is a tradition that girls can only raise there head fully straight up and make eye contact, when they get married. So Souad aspiration is to aspire to be married and have a family. She find a guy who she hears wants to marry her. She allows herself to have sex with him before she marries him because she thinks he loves her but then later find out he does not. He disappears after she becomes pregnet with his baby. Now Souad is alone and forced to take on all the disappointed from her family with a baby on the way. Her brother was the most disgusted because sex before marriage is wrong in her culture so he burns her face.

The Scope of this story would be the men vs. woman because the men at this time are looked at as more important and highly ranked compared to woman. When men feel disrespected by woman, many times this can lead to abuse or killings. Another scope would be the abuse that woman under go in this culture, for example when Souad brother burns her just because she had sex. "This is what it was like in our village. It was the law of men. The girls and the woman were certainly beaten every day in the other houses, too"(Souad 13).
