The pink shirt theme was inspired by two Nova Scotia students who took a stand against bullies who picked on a 9-year-old student in their school.

According to published reports, the 9-year-old boy at Central Kings Rural School in the community of Cambridge wore a pink polo shirt on the first day of school. Bullies harassed the boy, called him a homosexual for wearing pink, and threatened to beat him up.
