How to Perform a Social Audit [Infographic] | Social Media Today | Building a Web Presence | Scoop.it

When thinking about social media strategy creation, where should a marketer start? One important component to be included should be a social media audit, where you survey the social landscape to find your customers, industry thought leaders and competitors on social spaces.

Through some analysis, a marketer is able to glean what works and what doesn’t based on the performance of competitor’s pages. By understanding how the audience responds to different types of content and calls-to-action, you can set your own channels up for success at the outsight....

Panda 4.0: Good news for content, bad news for link-stuffing

Panda 4.0: Good news for content, bad news for link-stuffing | Building a Web Presence | Scoop.it

Google’s latest Panda algorithm will not spell the death of press releases. Rather, it will ensure they contain higher-quality content that consumers and members of the media are looking for, say major wire services.

Google rolled out Panda 4.0, an algorithm designed to prevent sites with poor-quality content from ranking high in its search results. While the company has updated Panda several times throughout the years, a recent report by Search Engine Land claimed wire sites lost "significant rankings" on Google, between 60% and 85%, after the most recent update....

wanderingsalsero's insight:

I'm sure I'm not the only person who asks this question, but, "What about what 'we the people' think is 'good content'?"

In this article, I read the phrase (something about), 'what Google considers good content'.  Actually I think this is another case where Google is stacking the deck and putting this business of internet marketing more out-of-reach or normal people.

It's not their right to determine what's 'normal'.  What are they going to do next, start penalizing us for spelling and punctuation?

How to Write Great Headlines That Go Viral | Sendible

How to Write Great Headlines That Go Viral | Sendible | Building a Web Presence | Scoop.it

Wanna know a secret? The headline of this post alone, with proper placement and sharing of the article of course, might take this viral.

The good people over at KISSmetrics did some research a few years back about what makes a good headline, and the results were very helpful. The interesting thing about writing is that while verbiage and colloquialisms will change over time and distance, the basics of communication always remain the same.

All that to say that a quality formula for developing a headline will stay pretty evergreen, as true a decade or two from now as it is today. The method the author developed became SHINE, and I personally found it very helpful. So why not share it?...

wanderingsalsero's insight:

They're right.  Headlines the the single most important part of the article/post process.  The liberating thing about that realization is that it's so easy to practice writing good headlines.  If people realized the infinite possibilities for good content, they'd feel more comfortable with practicing writing good headlines.  Just like anything else, practice is the key.

Neil Patel: "Whether you like or hate Google Plus, you have no choice but to leverage it. Why? Because Google owns it!

You know... I REALLY have a hard time feeling friendly toward Google.  Or YouTube, for that matter.  They're both arrogant as the day is long.  I mean, where else would any sane person do business with somebody where you couldn't even talk directly to a manger...let alone the 'owner'.

They get all pissy and and toss people off of their platforms with virtually zero recourse at all while at the same time giving the government any and all information they want while ALSO taking our information and using it either (a) for their own purposes and/or (b) against us.

That's good service?

I recall hearing that Google+ is changing into another animal now that the original founder has departed.  That's the way these guys do it.  They're digital 'pushers'.... get you hooked and then raise the price.

Museums curate works of art. We digital marketers curate blog posts.

Though our link shares may not be artistic contributions, the idea of curation is at least the same at museums and online: We’re all seeking only the best material to pass along to our patrons, customers, fans, or followers.

Finding and sharing exquisite content  has never had more value than it does today.People love being told what’s good to read or essential to see. With that in mind, we’ve collected some ways to get started with curation and to do so as efficiently and expertly as possible....

Escape Google With These 12 Search Engine Alternatives

Escape Google With These 12 Search Engine Alternatives | Building a Web Presence | Scoop.it

Google isn't the only game in town and isn't even the best alternative for many specific search tasks and needs. Here's how to escape Google's grip with Bing, Blekko, BuzzSumo, DuckDuckGo, SocialMention, Quantcast, Topsy, Wolfram|Alpha, and more.

As concerns over the de facto monopoly status of Google continue to grow, I'm reminded of the great philosopher Herman Cain and his infamous line  "blame yourself". As long as "Google" is a generic phrase for Internet search, their dominant position is assured. That said, you can do something about it.There are plenty of Google alternatives and many of these players offer a bettersearch experience, depending on your needs. Here are 12 alternatives to escape your reliance on Google for all things search...

Computer Repair Services - Hart's PC Repair - Computer Repair and IT Services - YouTube

wanderingsalsero's insight:

I've always believed that it was good karma to give thanks where thanks is due and that certainly applies to Paul Hart and his trusty iMac expert Chris Carruthers. They helped over a major hurdle tonight and undoubtedly saved me a lot of further frustration.

I've recently been using an iMac for most of my work. Even though I don't really like Macs very much, I was using it primarily because of the bigger screen. But....

Today I started to have problems with my Adobe Flash.....as and the Firefox platform that I use it on---- it didn't work! So I'm thinking....'What to do?'

I recalled an outsourcing service I'd used before and had pretty good luck with so I went back there and picked out a listing that somehow just 'felt' kinda safe to me. I sent them and email and, even though they're in Georgia and I"m way over here in the UAE, I heart back from the owner, Paul, in just a few hours.

Anybody who's ever dealt with service issues online knows how tense it can be while you wait and wonder and hope that somebody will get back to you, right? That's how I felt.

Much to my relief, I got a skype call from Paul and we set up a time about an hour in the future where he and his Mac guy, Chris, would get back to me and we'd hook-up online and they'd try to solve my problem.

It was obvious that Chris knew what he was doing....i.e. he knew his way 'around' on a Mac but after about 15-20 (much more time than I had prepaid for, Chris began to suspect that it might be a deeper problem than just a configuration issue.

He did some snooping around on various forums and such, right there in 'real time' and...shur'nuff.... he discovered that lots of other people were having similar issue with Macs and Firefox and Flash.

Long-story-short.... we agreed that I should just use Chrome until Firefox got their act together and fixed their Flash plugin to work on Macs. Point is.....they really treated me nice. No bitching about the mystery or goobly-gook trying to 'mouse-up' the ticket. They did exactly what I wanted them to do....they found the answer to my problem.

It made perfect sense to me so....for now.....I'm going to be a Chrome-boy....for now :-) But I would highly recommend Paul and Chris and Hart's PC Repair for any kind of PC problems. Paul's got a real radio-announcer's voice and he and Chris are very easy to communicate with (i.e. they listen well). And last but not least, they're very economical too.

They tell me they do a lot of virus removals (easy to do remotely if you know what you're doing like they do!), remote support and tech support and, just to prove they're not a 'flash-in-the-pan' they've been in business for over 9 years.

Especially for anybody in the US., as cheap as long distance calls are nowadays, it's nice to know that PC frustration relief is just a phone call away .

What if Everything You Know About Social Media Marketing is Wrong? | Building a Web Presence | Scoop.it

...If you are employed in social media marketing, it is time for a healthy dose of reality followed by some serious soul searching and career planning. Some of you are lucky enough to work in the rare companies that create advocates with great products, service and mission and thus are equipped to leverage social media for marketing gain; most work at companies that have inflated their opportunities in the medium and are floundering with their social media marketing and content strategies.

Here's the way a large number of social media professionals today go about justifying their programs, along with some recent data that may (and should) scare the hell out of you if you work in social media marketing...

Via Jeff Domansky
wanderingsalsero's insight:

All I can say is that I never really did get 'on' this bandwagon in the sense of trying to milk it for money.  I've always thought that most of what I saw/see on FB and Twitter is extremely silly bullshit  Who has time for such stuff is hard for me to image...especially nowadays with the economy in the tank.

I've always thought that any kind of content should have some real value to the reader whether they're your customer or not.  And furthermore that it should be just as much a type of self expression as anything else.

People will make a decision about whether or not they want to 'like' or 'follow' you based on the perception they get of you as a person...or, in the case of companies, by their impression on what the companies really stands for and what they 'do' (and how it benefits people).

Find out how a major healthcare brand used social media and user-generated content to double the return on their social media investment.
wanderingsalsero's insight:

I was thinking about almost exactly the same thing two days ago!  My take on it was/is:  We all know people who would probably be glad to write something (over their own name/brand) on our blog.  I think it would be an obvious win/win/win to encourage that sort of thing.

In my case, I know two or three pastors, 4 dance instructors, two or three dance event promoters, at least one successful guy in internet marketing, one local real-estate guy, and probably several other people I can't think of right now.

What would happen if I sent them an email and just said, "Hey...<Name>, You've been on my contact list for a long time now and I'm pretty sure you know that I have a blog.  I'd be more than happy to have you do a guest-post sometime.  We can discuss the topic but as long as it's 'good' for my readers, I'm cool with whatever you might have in mind.  Please let me know if something like this would interest you.  I'm sure you've got a lot to offer and I suspect that I probably know some people you don't :-)"

I even wonder if somebody could come up with some sort of widget or script that would keep an 'offer' like that 'on the table' on my own web properties?  I would have no way of knowing who sees one of my posts and might be very open-minded to guest blogging on my properties.  So what if they're not a AAA+ brand?  Neither am I.  I think it would be a good way for 'us' to help each other 'along the internet road to fame'.

P.S.  For 'local business' I think it would be a great way to Joint Venture locally.

Leafit -- Easily Monetize Your Social Content | Building a Web Presence | Scoop.it
wanderingsalsero's insight:

Imagine if social networks allowed you to get paid for just posting a picture of a good product, at a guaranteed lowest price, on their social site?

That's basically what's happening.  Soon to be launched is Leafit, the new social network that allows you to monetize pictures.  Facebook and Pinterest and other social sites just use your content to attract viewers who are exposed to ads that those platforms sell.  But now you can turn the tables and monetize your own 'stuff'.

Think about it.  How many times do you think you've put a picture on a social post that somebody somewhere, depending on how viral the post content and the picture was, decided they liked that item and went out and bought it somewhere?

It's probably happened at least a few times..... but it won't happen ever again to people who use the soon to be released free ItApp.  Just post a picture, tag it and get paid.  Get more information here:

You can join for free as an affiliate or take advantage of some extended income options by joining as an associate for a small monthly fee.  Either way, it's the direction that social media is going.

Read the internet like a newspaper with PaperLater | Building a Web Presence | Scoop.it

...Tom Taylor, co-founder of Newspaper Club tells The Verge that tests of the service have so far been positive. PaperLater appears to be a love or hate service, says Taylor. "The reaction [has been] divided between 'OMG I've wanted this all my life' and 'Why on earth would you print out the internet?'"

PaperLater will never take the place of services like Pocket — even Taylor admits to using it alongside a similar app. Short articles suitable for a commute go to the app, longer articles get pushed to the weekend for reading with PaperLater. "It's about giving people the choice to take something offline, and making it really easy to do that." As odd a service as it may seem, PaperLater's existence isn't without precedent.

Newspaper Club was founded with similar principles, and has been successfully running for years. Rather than offering an automated service like PaperLater, the site provides simple tools to create custom newspapers, and it's printed over four million newspapers since its formation in 2009....

A Scientific Guide to Hashtags: How Many, Which Ones, and Where to Use Them | Social Media Today | Building a Web Presence | Scoop.it

Internet language has evolved considerably over the past few years as social media has taken off. Hashtags are a huge part of this evolution. What once was a telephone button is now a social media phenomenon.  No wonder people are curious.

When they ask, I tell them that hashtags are a pound sign immediately followed by a keyword. They're used for categorization on social media. Yes, they can be annoying if overused. And yes, I've seen the hashtag video of Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake.

Hashtags also have the potential to be truly valuable. The stats and info below make a pretty clear case that we should be understanding, using, and appreciating hashtags....

Videos may make up 84 percent of internet traffic by 2018: Cisco | Building a Web Presence | Scoop.it
By Marina Lopes WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Video consumption of the World Cup alone will generate nearly as much Internet traffic as occurred in all of Australia in 2013, according to a new Cisco Systems Inc report that shows growth in Internet traffic is fueled by video. The report, which says video is expected to grow to 84 percent of Internet traffic in the United States by 2018 from 78 percent currently, raises questions about whether Internet service providers should prioritize traffic, which has become a controversial issue. "In the future at some point every month is going to look like the world cup month because the consumption just keeps getting bigger and bigger," said Robert Pepper, Cisco's vice president of global technology policy. Cisco, one of the leading makers of networking equipment, studies the use and speed of devices, connections and data for an annual forecast of Internet traffic growth.

In other words..."OK.  More information.  So what?!"  But of course some people already pointed out that curation IS about more than just the raw information itself, right?  I've always said that a few wise words, well spoken softly and slowly, are worth a lot more than gigs of info 'dumped' on somebody's head.

Why LinkedIn is morphing from a social network into an online newspaper

Why LinkedIn is morphing from a social network into an online newspaper | Building a Web Presence | Scoop.it

On May 5th, LinkedIn will celebrate its 11th birthday. It announced last month that 300 million people had signed up for the professional social network. This evening, LinkedIn will report earnings for first quarter of this year, which analysts expect to surpass the company’s own guidance.

Despite all these positive signs, there is one question that has dogged the network for the majority of its history: What is LinkedIn actually for?Establishing a clearer identity is crucial to LinkedIn’s future.

While more than 300 million people have joined, LinkedIn’s most recent filings suggest that the number of people who log in at least once a month is probably closer to 200 million. Growth in US monthly desktop users and desktop pageviews both slipped into negative territory last year (though visitors from mobile are climbing)....

Google may kill its social network, Google+, following Vic Gundotra's departure.Google is reportedly planning to dismantle its social network, Google+. Google will consider Google+ a platform rather than a product, TechCrunch reports, citing "multiple sources.

"This means that it will no longer exist as a social network aimed at competing with Facebook, but it still might be integrated into Google's existing products. The company has allegedly been shifting the teams that used to be at "the core" of Google+ and is moving more talent toward the Android team....

wanderingsalsero's insight:

I must admit that I'm one of those people who was kind of irritated when I started to hear that Google+ was ANOTHER social network I had to worry about.  As if Facebook wasn't enough pain-in-the-ass.  However, I will admit also that any property that Google has is probably going to be impossible to ignore simply because they clearly are going to give it preferential treatment (just like Blogger).

Like countless others, I truly hope all this is premature 'idle chat'....like what the phone will look like, etc.  Google+ is a mainstay of mine; I have met and made numerous friends and business contacts/learned a multitude of new things/been introduced to entirely new concepts/the list goes on and on.

Please, if you feel as I do, LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD TO GOOGLE!  KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF GOOGLE+ UNLESS IT IS IMPROVEMENT TO UTILIZATION, ETC.

Thank you one and all.

Here's a post from Ryan Hanley.  I don't know who he is but obviously he knows a lot of Google+.  I've been endeavoring to learn more about G+ lately and I found several illuminating factoids and illustrations here.  There's an interesting video about "Circles" too.

This info came to me via Michael Stelzner's always excellent www.socialmediaexaminer.com .

Scott Sigler.com saved me about 75% on a new domain at GoDaddy.com!

Scott Sigler.com saved me about 75% on a new domain at GoDaddy.com! | Building a Web Presence | Scoop.it
GoDaddy code sigler295 gets a new domain for $2.95, including dot-com names. Or, GoDaddy coupon go35off5 saves 32% off entire single order of all products.
wanderingsalsero's insight:

I believe in giving credit where credit is due so I want the world to know that I just got a new domain, (www.buildingawebpresence.com) from GoDaddy for a grand total of ONLY $3.13.  It was quick and easy and, needless to say, I'm a 'happy camper'.  I've actually got one or two more to order soon.

It was strange though in one way.  I tried to use JoinHoney.com, which I had used successfully before, but this time it didn't seem to work.  The first time I used it, I was in Manila and it worked fine.

But now I'm in Ras al Khaimah, UAE.... and it didn't seem to work.  It's supposed to automatically give you the discount during the GoDaddy checkout process. I'm actually rather surprised because JoinHoney was recommended to me by a very successful internet marketer. But....whatever.

Thanks Scott Sigler!  I'll have my new website up in a week or so.
