And with 72% of people more likely to buy from a company they follow on Twitter, small businesses everywhere need to start thinking big and take advantage of Small Business Saturday coming up in the UK (it was last week in the US).

A solid foothold on Twitter can be a challenge if your brand isn’t yet established, so to help your SME take that initial leap from unknown to well-known, we’ve compiled six essential steps to optimizing your Twitter account and getting the most out of the socially active audience. If you follow these tips and use our checklist below then you’ll have a Twitter strategy that matches your aspirations in no time....

I know I don't pay enough attention to Twitter and most SME's probably don't either. I think the reason is partly due to the fact that they don't know how to make it pay (as it is anything else).

wanderingsalsero's insight:

You know, it's amazing what you discover or realize when you look at the profit motive for doing things...i.e. the reasons other people do things.

I'm not saying there's anything bad about making money... or even that there's anything nefarious about being creative about ways to make money.... or even that there's anything bad about being less than totally candid about the reasons you do things. Sometimes it's just not relevant. .

But sometimes when you look 'under the hood' and find a squirrel in a rotating cage instead of the throbbing engine that you expected, you can really have your 'reverence' shattered.

In this case it's "The Stevies". I think it's actually kind of funny.

I was writing (another) article about an MLM company tonight that got a Stevie Award. I'd written about other MLM companies that had gotten Stevies too but this was a new 'order' I'd received.

In the process of doing some more research to add some 'beef' to my article, I found that 'The Stevies" is a BIG operation and by looking just a little deeper (i.e. Wikipedia and Google) I discovered that they probably make a LOT of money doing what they do.

So...you may ask, "Gee Art...what do they do?

Their deal is that they have bunches and bunches of categories of awards, open to companies and individuals from all over the world. And, as I understand it, they charge for entrants and/or nominations (I'm not totally clear on whether it's both or one or the other)... as much as $500 each. Then they charge to attend the award ceremonies (which I think is certainly fair). They might even charge to be a 'judge' but I sorta doubt that that would 'fly'.

Point is...they monetize the crap out their brand. This guy Paul Gallagher who started 'The Stevies' back in 2002, when they were originally called 'The American Business Awards', must have been a pretty sharp cookie. I don't know if he's still alive. I would think so.

And I'm not being critical.... more power to'em if they can pull it off. But just look through this website and imagine all the money that's generated from all these awards, and these dinners, and all these tickets to people attending these ceremonies, and all these hotel accommodations, and (maybe)  all these media reproduction rights, etc., etc.

Wow!...I must say it's pretty darn slick!! They ought to get a Stevie themselves :-) for 'creating value'.

WHICH 50 : By 2020 half of the world's population will be connected to the mobile web: GSMA | Building a Web Presence | Scoop.it

Within six years half of the human race will be on the mobile web, as 1.6 billion new subscribers join the third of the world’s population already connected, according to a report by the Groupe Special Mobile Association (GSMA), a global body set up to represent the interests of mobile operators worldwide. Called “Digital Inclusion report 2014”, the findings were released today at the GSMA Mobile 360-Africa.

According to Anne Bouverot, Director General of the GSMA, “Our new findings underline how mobile is now the gateway to the Internet for billions of citizens across the world and will be responsible for connecting millions of currently ‘offline’ global citizens to the Internet in the years to 2020 and beyond.”

She said developing innovative ways to accelerate digital inclusion in the form of affordable mobile Internet access is now a key focus for the GSMA, its operator members and the broader mobile industry ecosystem.

The report found that the vast bulk of new mobile subscribers will come from the developing world, where the number of mobile internet users will double from 1.5 billion in 2013 to three billion by 2020 — rising from 25 per cent of the developing world population to 45 per cent over the period

By way of contrast, in Sub-Saharan Africa only 17 per cent of the population were mobile internet subscribers in 2013, but penetration is forecast to increase to 37 per cent by 2020....

Scoop.it Introduces New Layout Templates, Full Topic Embeds and Direct White-Label Publishing to WordPress

Scoop.it Introduces New Layout Templates, Full Topic Embeds and Direct White-Label Publishing to WordPress | Building a Web Presence | Scoop.it

Scoop.it, the content discovery, curation, distribution and publishing platform has recently added some very significant improvements to its offering, that make it service even more interesting for any kind of online publisher, company or agency looking forward to find, vet and curate the best content available online on a specific topic.

The first and long-awaited new feature is the availability of multiple layout templates that Scoop.it publishers can now utilize and which can be swtiched to instantly.

The second one is full embedding of curated topics onto any web page to make it easiest for any publisher to rapidly integrate and display scoop.it content directly on their sites.

The third and most powerful new addition is the availability of a new white label direct publishing feature for WordPress-based publishers.

Although I have not had the opportunity to test this new feature, which is available only through a new Marketers subscription plan, it surely looks as the perfect fit for all those publishers who wanted to use Scoop.it more as a backend for producing curated content for their site than as a final publishing destination.

With these new additions Scoop.it consolidates itself as feature-rich, reliable and affordable content curation system that can satisfy many different types of needs: from education, to content marketing, news publishing and community building.

What Everyone Needs To Know About MLM | TimothyTiah.com

What Everyone Needs To Know About MLM | TimothyTiah.com | Building a Web Presence | Scoop.it
I always thought that given how MLM has been around for so long people would know better but from the comments above it's obvious that's not the case. People still are getting into it with the wrong expectations.
wanderingsalsero's insight:

This is interesting because it's a case of somebody being angry.  First of all, it sounds like they're perhaps in China or some China continuous area.  And the fact is that the Asian countries and the consumers therein in really don't have the background to evaluate MLM 'offers' properly.

That's partly why Avon got into problems in China....as also did (I believe) USANA, and NuSkin.... i.e. some distributors got carried away and simply said some things they shouldn't have said.

In general, I think the reputable companies (like FGXpress, MonaVie, Vemma, Sunrider, Organo Gold, Legal Shield, Primerica, Mommys Club (it's got a new name now but I forget what it is), Synergy, and several others give the average person a lot better 'shot' at success than the average company does that will let them work 40 years of their life for a worthless fake gold watch to retire on 50% of what they couldn't live decently on in the first place.

Where people make their big mistake in MLM is to put all their eggs in one basket too early.  The time to have a P/T MLM job is when you DON'T need it.  Most people in the US know better how to evaluate an MLM opportunity nowadays but it's unfortunate that people in many other countries don't AND there isn't yet any well-informed regulatory bodies in most of those countries to establish a reasonable set of guidelines within which these companies work.

Danny Votra, Successful MLMer With Karatbars "Gets It" and Uses Scoop.it To Pull Traffic

Join our team build http://karat10k.com Fb Room https://www.facebook.com/groups/1427700144124825/ Develop Instant Credibility with your new fan base no matte...
wanderingsalsero's insight:

I stumbled across this video today and frankly was very pleased to see it because I've long been a fan of curation but usually get blank stares when I talk about it.  I guess that's the price of being an 'early adopter', eh?

Although curation has been around for a few years now and a goodly number of big companies use it, still very few individuals are aware of it.....and if they don't really understand some internet marketing basics they don't 'get it' when you try to explain it.

Personally, I've always like curation because I simply find it fun.  But Danny here really hits the nail on the head because he precisely articulates one of the advantages of curation....it's gives you credibility.  I just got through spinning and re-writing an article last night talking about 4 reason prospect say 'no' and the biggest reason was that they don't trust the presenter.... i.e. it's a credibility issue.

Danny here is in network marketing and he's talking about using a site called www.scoop.it (SI) to develop leads.  SI contributes toward driving leads into the top of your sales funnel because it will return tons of basic content to you from very credible sources, every day, based on whatever key words you tell it to look for.

Then, you (or in this case....the newbie distributor) simply comment on that content and redirect it via the SI functionality to your Facebook FanPage and VOILA....now YOU'RE the person with the credibility (by association).  Other than that, all you've got to do is drive traffic to your FP (which most people do with FB ads)

I've been in a few MLMs myself and I know first-hand how easy it is to waste tons of money on 'new tools'.  I've done it myself.  So....I think the method Danny describe here is something "real" that obviously works.

It sounds to me like the method he's talking about might require an upgrade from the Free Scoop.it platform to the $25 @ month 'Pro' platform (something I've been reluctant to do) but Danny's concept is still something that could probably be done on a smaller scale with the free version.  I'm just not sure.

There is another platform somewhat similar to SI in all ways but one.  That other platform is RebelMouse.  However, although RebelMouse does have what I consider to be a slightly more attractive layout and a few UI functionalities that SI does not have, their site has not been working correctly for me for about a month now and they're either unaware of it or can't fix it or don't want to.  I'm starting to suspect that they're censoring my very Libertarian and outspoken political views.

What Scoop.it has that I do not see in RebelMouse is their 'Discovery Engine' and that's what Danny is talking about leveraging to build credibility within his target demographic which is people concerned about 'gold', 'money' and 'currency'.  It just makes incredible sense and I'm sure it works in other niches too.  For somebody in MLM, I think it's genius.  In fact, I wrote an article about it in the MLM magazine I write for...but I never got any feedback on it.

I don't know Danny but obviously he's more independent and has more initiative than the average MLMer who simply sits around and waits for 'the company' to come out with 'exciting new tools' they can waste money on.

Most MLM companies talk a good game about the digital age but, in my view, very few of them really encourage their people to use it. Danny 'gets it'.  I don't know anything about his company, Karatbars International, but I think the idea of putting Gold into an MLM model makes sense considering today's very volatile socioeconomic situation.

Yes, it's probably true, that the layers of commission in the MLM model will make the product cost a bit more than if you simply bought it on the open market but I think Gold is going to continue its rapid rise in value as world economies turn to shit (from too much "professional" management").

Curation de contenu et SEO, must read !

Rachael Johnston's curator insight, November 19, 4:54 PM

Curated content is not the same as duplicated content. Although it is put on websites that are not its original, it is not duplicating because it is linked to the URL of the original source, therefore it drives traffic for the original owner and it beneficial to the creator. The curated content adds value for the readers and encourages SEO in Google. Google is against duplicated material but is strongly in favour of shared content, Google views the sharing of URLs and content as a way to determine reliability and  relevancy.

As curated content adds value for your readers, here are The New Rules for SEO when curating, as stated in slideshow:

- Freshness - keep the content current and up-to-date. You want readers to see value in what you are sharing, and it will not do that if it is out of date.

- Relevance - you want to share content that is relevant. Sometimes things can get off track and you can lose track of the initial goal. Content curation helps organize your topics. Because you separate your content into categories, it makes it easy to rank long-tail keywords and keyword combinations within the niche.

- Quality - you need to have value and quality in your created and curated content because that is the only way to get readers interested and seeing you as a leader and expert. Quality can be seen through Social Proof. Social proof is seen when readers share, indicating they found the content valuable and worthily of passing on to others. This can be measured by number of inbound links and social shares

Best 8 Content Curation Practices for SEO

- Focus on well-defined fopics

- Be relevant and consistent

- Curate from reliable sources

- Keep snippets short

- Add Insight

- Attribute to original creator

- Share to social networks

- Integrate Google Authorship with your content curation hub - add link when posting (helps SEO by creating Social Proof)

* All of these practices are very important in content curation and SEO. It is very important to start with a specific topic. You can choose this by determining the right keywords through the Google Keywords Tool, in order to help with SEO. You also want to make sure that you give credit to others for work that is not yours. It is imperative that once content is created and curated that it shared on the appropriate social networks in order to gain attraction and traffic.

I'm also impressed with this guy because he comes across as polite. I'm getting more than a bit jaded and typical 'internet marketers' who don't know me/you 'from Adam' but they seem to been it's OK to address everybody as 'Hey Guys'....i.e. like we're their bowling team or something. 11 Marketing Trends To Watch For In 2015

11 Marketing Trends To Watch For In 2015 | Building a Web Presence | Scoop.it

Transparency will become the most important tool of marketing. Consumers are going to continue to exert further power and influence. The idea of radical transparency is something that few brands are taking advantage of now, and most brands fight it.The fundamentals of marketing are always going to be the same, but with the landscape changing at the speed of technology, what matters most now is how one activates the fundamentals. Smart marketers know that they need to get ahead of the trends and anticipate the next big things, or else be devoured by their competitors. Here is what I believe could be some of the most interesting developments next year:..

I think the MLM and DS industry isn't as proactive as it could be in their PR.

wanderingsalsero's insight:

I thought this was an interesting subject.  I have not, up to this point, ever felt the need for URL shorteners but I know they do have their uses.  It's often for privacy too, isn't it?

I remembered reading somewhere, perhaps in something internet marketing related, that URL shorteners hurt your on-page SEO.  So, I goggled it and found this brief article on SEO MOZ that says it does but only just an itty-bitty bit.

Top MLM Earners | They're all Hypocrites

Top MLM Earners? Here's who they are and why I believe they're hypocrites. http://www.entrepreneursuccessonline.com/mlm-secrets-opt-in/?s1=MLM-Earners&ad=yt ...
wanderingsalsero's insight:

I could be wrong...but I don't think I am.  This fellow is obviously very sharp and experienced and he has learned his craft very well.  He's actually correct in 95% of what he says.  The only problem is that there's a difference between "some" of the truth and 'the whole truth'.

What he's not telling you is that the MLM he's part of is (I suspect) The Empower Network.  TEN has made  many people a LOT of money but....those were the people who were willing to spend a lot more that $25 or $30 a month.  And TEN has had more than its share of controversy too.

I don't doubt for a minute that his 'system' that he sells does everything he says it'll do.  I know those things are necessary because I know something about internet marketing myself and the steps/tools he talks about here are the exact same things that big 'list builders' in internet marketing use to make BIG money....if they persevere.

What he's NOT telling you here is that the initial $30 he talks about has 2 or 3 further levels of upgrades(i.e. the REST of the truth) and you can BET that if you hang around long enough to get excited, you WILL want those other levels.

Should you care, i.e. as long as it works for you?

That's your decision.  Frankly, I would say that you could probably learn a lot from him and/or TEN but you better be ready to spend some more money, work very hard, and be comfortable selling at least a little bit of 'blue sky'.

Obama pushes for Ex-Im Bank extension - The Hill

Obama pushes for Ex-Im Bank extension
The Hill
Republicans have been divided over whether the Ex-Im Bank should be renewed.
wanderingsalsero's insight:

From what I hear, most Ex-Im money goes to liberal Democratic, well-connected Obama croonies.  I'm in favor of just letting free-market capitalism go where the wind blows it.  If we've learned anything in this present administration lately it's that they screw up everything they touch.  And furthermore, why should we waste any more of our money on countries that always criticize us anyway.   You'd think that by now we would have learned that money can't buy real friendship.

5 Ways To Enrich Your Life By Developing A Sense Of Humor | Building a Web Presence | Scoop.it
Humor – oh, dearest humor. Without it, life would be much more dull, and the basic human function of laughter would be absolutely useless. How boring that world would be!
wanderingsalsero's insight:

I'm going to spin this in my 'other life' of writing for an MLM magazine.  We mostly write about topic directly related to MLM and Direct Selling but this subject would make a good diversion I think.

wanderingsalsero's insight:

I thought this was interesting. Some of the tools I was already at least somewhat familiar with and others I wasn't.  Honestly, I thought the Snippet Organizer was an interesting idea because I know that it's just as much a pain-in-th- butt to fill in those On-Page SEO fields in the WP composition page as it is to write the article.

I mean, I rack my brain trying to write an article that's easily readable and has a few nuggets of truth and value in it and then I look down in the Yoost SEO (that's the SEO plugin that's on all my blogs) and I see they're asking me MORE questions because they don't know what I just got through saying!!!

So that leads me to realize another good use for a VA....i.e. to do that kind of thing.  And, considering that the average small or medium sized business person who even tries to figure out all this stuff is deluged with articles just like this wherein each one has another bushel of tools they're supposed to use.

BAM...information overload.  It's a wonder anybody ever makes it upstream to the spawning grounds.

BTW:  I write article for businesses too :-)
