Running a successful academic blog can make you feel like a rock star: authenticity and narrative are essential for forging your own digital identity | Impact of Social Sciences

The blog, The Thesis Whisperer, invites people to talk about the experience of doing a PhD and share their knowledge with others. I am not interested in PhD topics, but in the people who are doing them and how they manage the process of getting a degree from start to finish and beyond.

Available now: a guide to using Twitter in university research, teaching, and impact activities | Impact of Social Sciences | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

How can Twitter, which limits users to 140 characters per tweet, have any relevance to universities and academia, where journal articles are 3,000 to 8,000 words long, and where books contain 80,000 words? Can anything of academic value ever be said in just 140 characters?

The Finch Report on open access: it’s complicated | Impact of Social Sciences

The Finch Report on open access: it’s complicated | Impact of Social Sciences | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

"A committee set up by government was never going to foment a revolution. And so it has proved to be. The recommendations of the Finch Report released today mark a cautious, measured step in the right direction, but it is nevertheless a significant one.

The Finch committee was set up by science minister David Willetts at the end of 2011 and charged with examining “how to expand access to the peer-reviewed publications that arise from research undertaken both in the UK and in the rest of the world; and to propose a programme of action to that end.”

Debby helps build Southeast heat wave

Debby helps build Southeast heat wave | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it
Tropical system Debby will be drifting slowly from the Gulf of Mexico across northern Florida to off the Georgia coast by this weekend.

Last year the highest official temperature in Atlanta was 99 on August 26th. The last time Atlanta officially saw triple digit temperatures was August of 2007 when there were 9 days with highs of 100 or above.

My forecast highs Friday through Monday in Metro Atlanta are in the 96-101 range so it could be the hottest in 5 years. Some models and web page/phone apps show readings of 104-116. However, these are single computer algorithms with no meteorologist involved. My forecast is not so extreme, but bad enough.

Tribal norms

Tribal norms | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it
Shouldn’t we be hiring librarians who think and behave differently? Who see the world differently? Won’t that necessarily make for better libraries? I sometimes feel that librarianship is a closed society and that only those with a “very particular set of skills,” as Liam Neeson so cryptically stated in Taken, are accepted fully into its ranks. And I’m not talking about professional skills. I’m talking about tribal norms. If you’re not part of the tribe, how welcome or valued are you in this profession?

Are we afraid of something? If so, what?

Altmetrics, a guide to Twitter for academics, and increasing your academic footprint: our round-up of social media blogs in 2011 | Impact of Social Sciences | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

In 2011, we saw a growth in the use of social media as a tool for research and dissemination by academics and reseachers. Our most popular guest posts of 2011 investigate the possibilities that social media presents, yet academics’ use of such services such as 140 character microblog service Twitter, continue to spur a sharply divided debate.

Here are a small selection of our most read social media blog posts from the last year.

Failure is the new success | Plan B Nation

Failure is the new success | Plan B Nation | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

Failure has become something to brag about and these days; everyone’s out there bragging about what a huge failure they were. That little word — were — is crucial, because it’s past tense. It means recovery from failure, triumph over failure. Failure is the ball and chain of success and there isn’t anything more brag-worthy than shedding the ball and chain and living to tell the tale. Or, living to boast about the tale.
