Apps in Education: iPad Apps to Use as Student ePortfolios | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

By Reg Swnson

"I have yet to find the perfect Digital Portfolio app that I think I would use exclusively in a Visual Arts class. Some apps can be used as graphic portfolios or as beautiful sketchbooks, others are great at sharing. Not all of the apps available are great at all of these things. I have spent a heap of time trying to find one and would be more than happy for someone to send me the name of one they are using successfully. Having said that the following are apps that I would consider using;"

A Walmart Turned High-Tech Library, Ready for School | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

The new space and technology upgrade comes just in time to support the McAllen Independent School District as it rolls out a new digital curriculum. That includes putting an iPad 2 or iPod Touch in the hands of each of its 25,000 students, a process to be completed by the fall. This has prompted parents to visit the library seeking resources, says Horan. So the staff created pathfinders, online research guides that parents can bookmark. They’re also encouraging families to download available ebooks. “It’s exciting to see all ages coming in with technology and taking ebooks home with them,” she says.

What Schools Can Learn From the World of Photography

What Schools Can Learn From the World of Photography | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

When I thought about it, I wondered about the photography industry and how it has probably changed a great deal in the last ten years because of the evolution of digital photography. As I am admittedly no more of an expert on the field of photography as I am a strong photographer, I still wanted to share some observations and thoughts on what we can learn from photography and how it applies to what we do in school. The field of photography has grown and schools could probably learn a few lessons from the field.

Curate Your Next Online Course with the iTunes U Course Manager

Curate Your Next Online Course with the iTunes U Course Manager | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

Robin Good: I may be completely off the bat, but the new iTunes U Course Manager looks like a great new opportunity for teachers, professors and educators of all kind, to curate online courses that bring together the best learning materials available on a topic, and which can be accessed by anyone iOS, Mac or PC with iTunes installed.

With it you can upload any learning material you own while being able to add any additional materials (books, documents, video, audio, images, web pages and apps of your choice coming both from the iBookstore, the App Store or the iTunes store as well as from the web or from your own computer. Check this screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/Hwfjq.jpg

Given the above, any teacher using this new iTunes U authoring platform can effectively "curate" an online course that contains the very best resources and materials that one has been able to identify and bring together.

From TheNextWeb: "Apple’s iTunes U now lets teachers create their own courses for iPad, the company revealed on its site.

In practical terms, this means that students and pupils will be able to access this content on their tablet via the iTunes U app.

Teachers interested in using this feature need to register on iTunes U’s Course Manager page via Safari.

While the functionality is available for free, teachers not affiliated with schools that have public iTunes U sites will be limited to 12 courses and 50 students per course, Apple says."

Source: TheNextWeb

in iTunes U you can choose under which type of license you want to release your course: both All Rights Reserved and six flavors of Creative Commons licenses are available.

"iTunes U is a free service hosted by Apple that allows instructors, administrators, and affiliates to manage, distribute, and control access to educational audio and video content for students within a college or university."

The Conditions of Teaching

The Conditions of Teaching | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it
In the best of circumstances, teaching is difficult.

"Educators love to say that we should “celebrate diversity,” but it’s easier to put that slogan on a poster showing adorable kittens of different colors than it is to actually put into practice in a bad economy that exacerbates existing tensions. Professor Hopkins found the conditions of 1912—with homogeneous students, little concern for drop-outs, few students who spoke limited English, no standardized tests, and other factors that make demands on teachers’ time—to be oppressive and tragic.

In today’s more complicated world and schools, a century later, much remains the same. Professor Hopkins wrote that “[P]ublic opinion and public criticism enter to this statement an effective denial. The public doesn’t know anything about the circumstances, but it does seem to know that it pays for something that for some reason it is not receiving; and the teacher is not usually in a position to escape either the blame or the penalty.” Sound familiar?

How about putting 40 students in those classes (the recommendation of Bill Gates, one of the two most influential people in the nation in current educational policy)? How about if half of them would rather be working, like my grandfather, and resist the whole institution of school, much less the English class and its incessant demand for essays?"
