Mapping Transformation, Makerspaces and more at next week’s ALA Virtual Conference

Experimentation and innovation are the name of the game at the July 18 and 19 “Mapping Transformation” Virtual Conference. High-profile speakers and presenters will highlight how new services are transforming both their libraries and their communities, while the two days of interactive Web sessions, conversations and insights offer starting points for discussion as well as practical ideas for moving forward and trying something new.

Travis Good from MAKE Magazine is a late-breaking addition as a bonus keynote speaker, talking about what a Makerspace is and why libraries should care. After a year spent visiting Makerspaces in the U.S. and Canada, Good says he knows what makes these workshop facilities tick, filled as they are with people who love to learn, collaborate and create. Fueled by enthusiasm to make and enabled by technology advances, these groups are sprouting up around the world. He plans to share what he’s learned and why he thinks they're an important resource to help libraries advance their mission.

Circulating Ideas: Episode Fourteen: Liz Burns & Kelly Jensen

Circulating Ideas: Episode Fourteen: Liz Burns & Kelly Jensen | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

Liz Burns blogs about young adult books, TV, and other things that capture her fancy at A Chair, A Fireplace & A Tea Cozy at School Library Journal. By day, she is a Youth Services Librarian for an east coast regional library for the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. Liz co-authored, with Sophie Brookover, Pop Goes the Library: Using Pop Culture to Connect with Your Whole Community (Information Today, Inc., 2008).Three things to know about her: her favorite television show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer, she used to be a lawyer (but don't hold that against her) and she loves to read. Liz lives at the Jersey Shore.... and it's nothing like the TV show. Really. You can follow her on Twitter @LizB.

Kelly Jensen is a librarian, a reader, a writer, a copy editor, and compulsive consumer of all things books and blogs. She lives in a small town in Wisconsin but grew up near Chicago, spending time in rural Iowa and Austin, Texas in between. She enjoys really bad reality television, cooking, traveling, ice cream, and making art. Two crucial facts: she does not eat red meat and has not read Jane Austen. She's probably the cruelest person you will ever know. Kelly blogs at Stacked and you can find her on Twitter @catagator.

It’s Not About the Circuits. It’s About the Making. | Bud the Teacher

Gently and kindly, I’d like to say to you that Making isn’t just about circuits and transistors. Or about robots and tank treads. Or drones or LEDs embedded in belt buckles and clothing. Making is more primal than that, and far too important to leave to the geeks with soldering irons. #

The knitters are Makers. As are the cooks. The writers, the poets, and the children with construction paper, scissors and glue. The kid making dresses and slacks in his basement is a Maker. So is the young lady weaving flowers into bracelets and wreaths. #

If you’re building something from the stuff you’ve got on hand, then you count. You’re Making. That’s a good thing. And I want to help build cultures of Making and Makers that recognize that the thing made is less important than the habit of the Making. #

Is It Time to Break Up With Your Job? | lisacarlucci.com | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

Here's a question I received this week:

"When do you know the relationship between you (the librarian) and your library (your place of work) is over?"

As someone in the business of innovation, I'm often approached by fellow information professionals frustrated by the creative limitations of their organizational culture. What do you do? How do you know when it's time to move on?

"I ask you: if an article falls into the Taylor and Francis journal system and no one gets to read it, is any new knowledge created? If we’re all circulating these papers “pre-print” why are we bothering with these commercial publications at all, except for personal professional gain? And what should we do?"

Figure/Ground at the Cleveland Public Library | Library as Incubator Project

Figure/Ground at the Cleveland Public Library | Library as Incubator Project | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

"Cleveland Public Library’s See Also program is an innovative partnership with LAND Studio that brings a rotating suite of contemporary art installations to the library’s Eastman Reading Garden. See Also is a clever pun that plays on a reference cataloging term; if you find it on a digital book record (or on a card-catalog card, if your library is old school), it means “check out these terms too; they’re related to what you’re looking for.” In this case, See Also suggests that the visual arts can help the community see their library with a new perspective."

Maker Education Initiative | Every Child a Maker

Maker Education Initiative | Every Child a Maker | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

he mission of the Maker Education Initiative is to create more opportunities for young people to make, and, by making, build confidence, foster creativity, and spark interest in science, technology, engineering, math, the arts—and learning as a whole. We want young people to join—and eventually lead—the growing Maker Movement.
We are launching the Maker Education Initiative at Maker Faire Bay Area (May 19-20, 2012). Our goal is to build on the excitement and inspiration of Maker Faire and explore working with partners in our community to promote more opportunities for children and teens to participate in making activities and develop their own projects as makers.
