Scholarly publishing is broken: Is it time to consider guerrilla self-publishing? | Impact of Social Sciences | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

"I ask you: if an article falls into the Taylor and Francis journal system and no one gets to read it, is any new knowledge created? If we’re all circulating these papers “pre-print” why are we bothering with these commercial publications at all, except for personal professional gain? And what should we do?"

Figure/Ground at the Cleveland Public Library | Library as Incubator Project | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

"Cleveland Public Library’s See Also program is an innovative partnership with LAND Studio that brings a rotating suite of contemporary art installations to the library’s Eastman Reading Garden. See Also is a clever pun that plays on a reference cataloging term; if you find it on a digital book record (or on a card-catalog card, if your library is old school), it means “check out these terms too; they’re related to what you’re looking for.” In this case, See Also suggests that the visual arts can help the community see their library with a new perspective."

Maker Education Initiative | Every Child a Maker

Maker Education Initiative | Every Child a Maker | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

he mission of the Maker Education Initiative is to create more opportunities for young people to make, and, by making, build confidence, foster creativity, and spark interest in science, technology, engineering, math, the arts—and learning as a whole. We want young people to join—and eventually lead—the growing Maker Movement.
We are launching the Maker Education Initiative at Maker Faire Bay Area (May 19-20, 2012). Our goal is to build on the excitement and inspiration of Maker Faire and explore working with partners in our community to promote more opportunities for children and teens to participate in making activities and develop their own projects as makers.

Digital Humanities Made Me a Better Pedagogue: a Crowdsourced Article | Digital Pedagogy | HYBRID PEDAGOGY

Digital Humanities Made Me a Better Pedagogue: a Crowdsourced Article | Digital Pedagogy | HYBRID PEDAGOGY | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

Pedagogy is inherently collaborative. Our work as teachers doesn’t (or shouldn’t) happen in a vacuum. In “Hybridity, pt. 3: What Does Hybrid Pedagogy Do?,” Pete and Jesse write, “Teaching is a practice. Good teaching is an engaged, reflective, and generous practice. Pedagogy is not just talking and thinking about teaching. Pedagogy is the place where philosophy and practice meet (aka “praxis”). It’s vibrant and embodied, meditative and productive.” There is an important distinction here between teaching and pedagogy, between work that is productive and work that is productive and also reflective.

Circulating Ideas: Episode Fourteen: Liz Burns & Kelly Jensen

Circulating Ideas: Episode Fourteen: Liz Burns & Kelly Jensen | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

Liz Burns blogs about young adult books, TV, and other things that capture her fancy at A Chair, A Fireplace & A Tea Cozy at School Library Journal. By day, she is a Youth Services Librarian for an east coast regional library for the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. Liz co-authored, with Sophie Brookover, Pop Goes the Library: Using Pop Culture to Connect with Your Whole Community (Information Today, Inc., 2008).Three things to know about her: her favorite television show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer, she used to be a lawyer (but don't hold that against her) and she loves to read. Liz lives at the Jersey Shore.... and it's nothing like the TV show. Really. You can follow her on Twitter @LizB.

Kelly Jensen is a librarian, a reader, a writer, a copy editor, and compulsive consumer of all things books and blogs. She lives in a small town in Wisconsin but grew up near Chicago, spending time in rural Iowa and Austin, Texas in between. She enjoys really bad reality television, cooking, traveling, ice cream, and making art. Two crucial facts: she does not eat red meat and has not read Jane Austen. She's probably the cruelest person you will ever know. Kelly blogs at Stacked and you can find her on Twitter @catagator.

Hechinger Report | Bridging the digital divide in America’s rural schools | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

Rural schools have long been leaders in distance-learning and online education—to offer a full slate of courses to their students, they’ve had to be. In fact, Edison has a fully online school that enrolls about 100 other students in the district. But when it comes to technology inside traditional classrooms, the small sizes—and budgets—of rural schools present unique hurdles.

All the time? - Plan B Nation | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

Lately, I’ve been returning to the popular Three Good Things practice – taking time at the end of each day to write down three positive experiences from the past 24 hours. Over the years that I’ve played with this exercise, I’ve had mixed results. There are times it’s left me cold and seemed like a waste of time. But these days, it feels helpful so I’m sticking with it for now. That’s the great thing about a toolkit. It gives you choices.
