If Atlanta officials have their way, the sprawling parking lots surrounding Turner Field will be turned into a vibrant, mixed-use area anchored by retail and parks that draw crowds even when the Braves are on the road.

The “Come Write In” initiative is a sub-program of NaNoWriMo that encourages writers, or Wrimos, to use libraries as writing studios during NaNoWriMo. The initiative is part active programming, part marketing campaign – meaning that libraries can get involved to whatever degree they are comfortable with and however works best for their programming schedule

After Wikipedia Editor Calls Him 'Not Credible', Philip Roth Writes His Own Secondary Source - The Digital Reader

After Wikipedia Editor Calls Him 'Not Credible', Philip Roth Writes His Own Secondary Source - The Digital Reader | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

Wikipedia isn’t perfect. Sometimes the mechanisms in place meant to protect the credibility of the information can actually get in the way of the people who are in a position to know the most about the subject correcting things they know to be mistakes. There are good reasons for this, of course—people who are directly connected with a subject might have ulterior motives for making changes. For example, a well-known PR firm caught flak for editing its clients’ articles last December, leading to the Chartered Institute for Public Relations in June issuing guidelines for its members requiring them to seek changes through Wikipedia’s editors.

Of course, not all such changes are so dodgy as paid flunkies nipping in to make their clients look better.

HOW-TO: A Philosophy of Bold Promotion in Arkansas

HOW-TO: A Philosophy of Bold Promotion in Arkansas | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

Have you ever had that feeling of excitement and dread all at once, with your stomach in your throat, heart pounding, hands sweaty, mouth dry, mind racing, not exactly sure how all of this is going to work out? Well, that’s what it feels like to stand on the side of the highway and look up at a billboard that reads “Spoiler Alert! Dumbledore dies on page 596.” knowing that you’re responsible for it.
I’m a member of the creative team at Craighead County Jonesboro Public Library, and we have the privilege of feeling that way on a fairly regular basis. From a YouTube comedy series (www.youtube.com/publiclibrary1) to the ridiculous Facebook covers (www.facebook.com/ccjpl) to the billboards and posters around town, we are constantly looking for new and creative ways to sell the library to the people of Craighead and Poinsett counties in Arkansas.

Phase I: Where Everything Becomes Real | Lovett US Room 202: The Story Studio

We have created a threshold which invites students to enter the room and evokes a spirit of both imagination and responsibility. We plan to create a sign above the door with a quote from Kurt Vonnegut which reads “We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful what we pretend to be”. This will be visible while standing in the hallway and provokes students who may pass by the classroom but never even enter it.

Contemporary Art Education: STEM to STEAM: Maker Spaces

I'm working on a STEM+Art grant with colleagues at Adelphi. I'm really excited about the information and ideas I'm coming across and will be sharing as much as I can via this webspace as the work progresses. I'm convinced that this shift in arts education, at least, is critical to our field as a whole. Below is a blog post about a woodshop being turned into a 'maker space'. I see numerous similarities and intersections with the installation projects I did with my high school students in Los Angeles. When we did those large scale installations in public spaces, the level of participation and motivation levels with all of my students was very high. Read on and comments welcome!
