New Librarianship’s New Promise » Virtual Dave...Real Blog | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

"Abstract: We must make a promise with our communities. We promise to help them participate in the full scope and scale of today’s society. To not simply help the unemployed find a job, but to find meaning and respect. To not simply help the student get to college, but to do so without the shackles of crippling debt. To not simply inform the citizen, but empower them to govern themselves. The promise we must make with our communities is that we are not consumers, we are not customers. We are not an audience to democracy. We are the democracy. We are the market. We consume, we produce and we matter. This community, this city, this state, the country, matters and we will shape its destiny. And we librarians are essential forces of this promise. We are not obsolete, we are not quaint, we are the promise of the better tomorrow."

An Outsider in the University Library

An Outsider in the University Library | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

"I thought today I could sit and read and take notes (and tweet). It'd be a nice change of scenery, I tried to convince myself. But then, when I got inside the big brick-and-concrete building, , I couldn’t access the Internet -- I couldn’t log-in to the WiFi network, and I couldn’t access 3G on my phone either. Nor could I find a table near an ethernet outlet. I’d forgotten (or rather, I’m oblivious) that it’s the end-of-term. The library was full of students, studying, something that had me strangely taken aback.

I noticed too that the study rooms on the third floor had been converted into grad students’ office spaces. I wondered which departments had expanded there. I wondered how the space issues reflected disciplinary power, office politics, and enrollment figures. I felt bad for not paying closer attention and relieved that I didn't have to."

The Innovative Educator: Parents & Teachers Tell Pearson What They Think About Their Attempt to Demystify Testing

The Innovative Educator: Parents & Teachers Tell Pearson What They Think About Their Attempt to Demystify Testing | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

via @kjarrett Upset by what they claimed was misinformation and misperceptions permeated by media coverage, Pearson made a botched attempt to launch a social media campaign (see the internal memo) to “demystify testing for parents.”
Pearson employees spent the day censoring comments but as the 9 - 5ers left the office, parents and teachers came on duty to send a loud and clear message to Pearson: “We’re not mystified. We don’t want your tests.”

The Matter of the Master’s | American Libraries Magazine | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

Don’t be shocked that school boards, university administrators, city councils, city managers, library boards, and even library directors are taking close notice of this lack of perception. Yes, people still want libraries. That’s not the issue at all. No, I take that back. That is precisely the issue. People want libraries so desperately that they are quite willing to sacrifice the cost of professional staff to get full hours and robust book budgets restored.

I mentioned back in January that Char Booth and I were working on a project together. That’s finally wrapped up and we packaged it all together:

Before becoming a content strategist, I worked as an academic librarian for five years. Although academia and consulting can sometimes seem like different planets, content strategists and librarians have a lot in common—after all, we all love content. Selecting it. Categorizing it. Making it findable and relevant for users.

Confessions of an Aca/Fan: Archives: Confronting the Challenges of Participatory Culture: Media Education for the 21st Century (Part One) | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

Empowerment comes from making meaningful decisions within a real civic context: we learn the skills of citizenship by becoming political actors and gradually coming to understand the choices we make in political terms. Today's children learn through play the skills they will apply to more serious tasks later. The challenge is how to connect decisions in the context of our everyday lives with the decisions made at local, state, or national levels. The step from watching television news and acting politically seems greater than the transition from being a political actor in a game world to acting politically in the "real world."
