A look at Executive Branch earmarks | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it
As this blog has discussed many times, while Congressional earmarks have received a lot of attention over the years, the Executive Branch has escaped public scrutiny for its own budget earmarks, as administrations of both parties have doled out...

Professional digital practice in academia: From online networking to building apps | Impact of Social Sciences | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

In my previous post, I explained the concept of digital sociology and presented four aspects I considered integral to this sub-discipline: professional digital practice, sociological analyses of digital use, digital data analysis and critical digital sociology. In this post I focus on professional digital practice, or using digital media tools for professional purposes: to build networks, facilitate public engagement, receive feedback, establish an e-profile, curate and share content and instruct students.

Westport Library Maker Space: the early days | Library as Incubator Project

The Westport Library Maker Space is a couple of weeks old, and so much fun! We’ve had people of all ages wander in daily, and many of them have ended up helping to build the two planes we’re working on this summer. It’s an organic process—we don’t know exactly where the Maker Space is headed when the planes are finished and suspended from the ceiling. But we do know that we’re moving in the right direction for the library, offering another dimension to the traditional services we’ve always had.

Shareable: Library Brings People Together Through Collaborative Creation

Shareable: Library Brings People Together Through Collaborative Creation | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

via @shifted

When a coffeeshop inside the main branch of the Oak Park, Ill. library closed, library staff and administrators found themselves facing a decision: what to do with the now-vacant, very visible space? After tossing around ideas they came up with a plan to turn it into a collaboratively creative space, and the Idea Box was born. While not as headline-grabbing as, say, a Walmart that’s been transformed into a public library, the Idea Box has become a catalyst for library participation, group creativity and community building.

Data-Driven Decision-Making vs. Discovery-Driven Planning (don’t measure a butterfly using the metrics of a caterpillar) - The Ubiquitous Librarian - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

I prefer change to be human-driven. I’d much rather enable people to become more successful rather than focusing on making the numbers look better. Perhaps it boils down to a question of helping lots of people just a little bit vs. helping fewer people but more significantly. Anyway, that’s not even the direction I am heading with all this. This isn’t about one’s service-persceptive but assessment-perspective. What do we want/need to know to enact change? Or taken further— to foster innovation?

Bedford Bits: Ideas for Teaching Composition » Blog Archive » Bread Loaf | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

For my money, Bread Loaf is the best teacher development program in the country: distinguished faculty from across the country gather with the students for an intense summer of writing, reading, and talking about language, literature, rhetoric—and most of all about students and learning. In addition to coursework, most teachers there devote themselves to preparations of the coming school year.

A Lesson of Letting Go | Inside Higher Ed

A Lesson of Letting Go | Inside Higher Ed | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

Last Saturday, I attended a party there for the last time, the Department will move to a bigger campus next year. As I gave a tour of the building to my boyfriend, telling him stories of my college years, as well as my activities as actress and singer on the stage again during university years and how my years there contributed to my (still) amateur spirit of literary writing, I remembered the distinct culture of the Department which educated us as open-minded, self-learning and entrepreneurial intellectuals who also knew the value of relaxing and having fun.

Teaching Innovation Is About More Than iPads in the Classroom

Teaching Innovation Is About More Than iPads in the Classroom | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

Often visions and goals are nebulous -- if they exist at all. We can't just buy iPads (or any device), add water, and hope that strategy will usher schools to the leading edge of 21st century education. Technology, by itself, isn't curative. Human agency shapes the path.

In light of this dynamic, two critical questions need to be asked and provisionally answered when integrating technology into education. The first question, while obvious at first glance, isn't always fully articulated: "What are the educational goals of technology integration?"

The second question is equally important and often more elusive: "Do the current systems and processes support the integrative and innovative goals?"

Reflections on Connected Learning's Mozilla Webmaker Episode: Digital Literacy Through Making and Sharing | NWP Digital Is | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

We really enjoyed thinking through the thoughtful ideas and tools posed by the panel during this Connected Learning webcast. We hope others will chime in about some of these ideas as well: what do others think about using these tools in more traditional classrooms? Who should teach coding literacy? What can we learn from the maker culture that could shift some of the static ideas of schooling? Thanks to the panel for a provocative webcast.
