OUDaily.com | COLUMN: Hip Hop as Poetry class makes an impact on student's experience

With another semester ending and the rush of finals week soon behind us, I have been reflecting on the many classes that I have taken. Over the past three years, all of these have been an experience. Some taught me useful facts and figures and, honestly, some were awful.

For the first time there is one class I am actually going to miss that made an impact on me more than any other. Professor Catherine John’s Hip Hop as Poetry and Cultural Expression is one that I am grateful to have experienced and saddened to see end.

One of the greatest documentaries I have seen. Bo Jackson was probably the greatest all around athlete, which is why "Bo Kows" became so popular, there wasn't many sports which he didn't excel at. Another dual sport athlete, and even better than Deion Sanders in my opinion!

Indeed, much of the hullaballoo about MOOCs this year has very little to do with the individual learner and more to do with the future of the university, which according to the doomsayers “will not survive the next 10 to 15 years unless they radically overhaul their current business models.”

Online Learning: a Manifesto | Online Learning | HYBRID PEDAGOGY | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

Online learning is not the whipping boy of higher education. As a classroom teacher first and foremost, I have no interest in proselytizing for online learning, but to roundly condemn it is absurd. Online learning is too big and variable a target. It would be like roundly condemning the internet or all objects made from paper.

Various Shades of Digital Literacy: The New Digital Divides | Inside Higher Ed | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

Besser is right to point out that "The digital divide also includes a gap between those who can be active creators and distributors of information, and those who can only be consumers." Nevertheless, the other types of digital divides I have been thinking about take place within those who can be both active creators and distributors of information, as well as consumers of that information.

Random Thoughts of an OutLaw Educator: Let's Get Ugly and True | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

Another day, another dismal library to fix. The Manchester Miracle is almost over. The Library was redone by Sam's Club. Truly. I know-- its strange: Sam Walton, the Wal-Mart goon who oppressed millions with his Carnegie-esque gospel of wealth philosophy fixing up a public school library. But let's face it: Sam is dead. The good Sam's Club did here was because of a community organizer named Kezia Ellison, who started a foundation called Educating Teens About HIV, Inc. and a solid group of working-class Sam's Club managers.

Essay critiques the ideas of Clay Shirky and others advocating higher ed disruption | Inside Higher Ed

Essay critiques the ideas of Clay Shirky and others advocating higher ed disruption | Inside Higher Ed | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

But how "open" is Udacity, really? Udacity’s primary obligation is to its investors. That reality will always push it to squeeze as much profit out of its activities as it can. This may make Udacity better at educating, but it also may not; the job of a for-profit entity is not to educate, but to profit, and it will. There’s nothing necessarily wrong with for-profit education -- and most abuses can be traced back to government deregulation, not tax status -- but the idea that "openness," as such, will magically transform how a business does business is a massively begged question.
