Disaster plans used to seem like “kind of a bother” to Lance D. Query, Tulane University’s director of libraries. Then, in 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, flooding Tulane’s Howard-Tilton Memorial Library with more than eight feet of water. “I look at them much more carefully now,” says Mr. Query.

Digital Research Technologies Offer More Information, More Distraction for High School Students, According to Pew Report | School Library Journal | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

Digital research tools have a “mostly positive effect” on students’ work, according to 75 percent of teachers surveyed for a recent report from the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project. But 87 percent of those teachers contend that these technologies also foster an “easily distracted generation with short attention spans,” and 64 percent believe that they “do more to distract students than to help them academically.”

In the Library with the Lead Pipe » Libraries: The Next Hundred Years | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

Which is one way of explaining Paul Graham’s work on his hundred-year language, which he named Arc. The project is ambitious, perhaps even megalomaniacal. Which may be why it works equally well to interpret it as a project based in altruism or as a project bred from selfishness. Whether his goal is to start a project that he’ll never himself get to finish or use in its realized form, or his goal is to use the best programming language on the planet even if he has to write it himself, his goal is to create something so spectacularly good that it will benefit everyone. As is clear from his essays and other writing related to Arc, he’s willing to fail, publicly, in its pursuit.

I hope libraries are ready to do the same. I hope we’re ready to work individually and together to identify the hundred-year library for ourselves. And I hope we’re ready to work publicly and without fear of failure to bring it about in a span far shorter than a hundred years.

Bedford Bits: Ideas for Teaching Composition » Blog Archive » Restructuring Gen Ed: The Buckets | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

Our state categories are a curious reflection of what SACS requires. The humanities are included, fine arts are not. Natural sciences and Mathematics are divorced. Behavioral science is, presumably, part of social science. I suppose the addition of Communication is a boon and a hopeful sign that as a state we value the ability of students to communicate. I will say that some of the other committees opened the day discussing who should be where: is history a social science or part of the humanities? Even buckets so reductive have leaky boundaries, it would seem, and the implications of who goes where have ramifications for departments across all institutions in Florida. Who will gain? Who will lose?

Schools turn away from gimmicks to motivate students for test season

That means some schools and teachers go to extraordinary lengths to help motivate students. Some parents might hear that a teacher will allow students who do well on the exams to skip finals. Others use food to spur their students.

Steckbauer and other West educators such as Sue Clairmore-Dix, the director of counseling, say simple seems to be working this year.

“From my end of things, I’m seeing students knowing how important the exams are. I think kids know about things such as the new report cards (a state system of measuring schools’ effectiveness). They’re reading the newspaper,” Clairmore-Dix said.

One Mare's Suffering Comes To An End

One Mare's Suffering Comes To An End | Buffy Hamilton's Unquiet Commonplace "Book" | Scoop.it

Eleven years ago her nightmare began. A year ago one man ended it. Today, its time for her happy ending to begin. In 2001 in the Warm Springs area of Oregon, a liver chestnut mare roamed free with her wild herd. That is until a government roundup shattered her world forever. Chased by a helicopter and trapped in catch pens, this mare and her herd were scattered to auction lots around the country. Everything she once knew was ripped away from her in a moment, without warning. The chestnut mare - now called Epic - would spend a year moving from auction lot to auction lot, wondering what this strange new world was and undoubtedly longing for her family and her freedom.
