A wheeled Lego robot may not look like a worm, but it "thinks" like one after programmers gave it the neuron connections in a C. elegans roundworm.

 

If the brain is a collection of electrical signals, then, if you could catalog all those those signals digitally, you might be able upload your brain into a computer, thus achieving digital immortality.

 

While the plausibility—and ethics—of this upload for humans can be debated, some people are foraging ahead in the field of whole-brain emulation. There are massive efforts to map the connectome—all the connections in the brain—and to understand how we think. Simulating brains could lead us to better robots and artificial intelligence, but the first steps need to be simple.

Přínos technologií tělesně postiženým

 

V následujících kapitolách se zaměřím na další skupinu možností neurálních implantátů. Jak jsem výše několikrát poznamenal, implantáty dokáží nejen zachycovat signály, které probíhají nervovou soustavou, ale také signály vysílat a tím ovlivňovat procesy v lidském organismu.

Rád bych se v dalších řádcích věnoval oblasti výzkumu, kde je dosahováno nejviditelnějších pokroků - vývoji kybernetických pomůcek, které přímo ovlivňují komunikaci člověka s jeho okolím a podporují nebo zcela nahrazují některé z pěti lidských smyslů. Jedná se o přístroje, které pomáhají umožnit lidem návrat zpět do společnosti zdravých lidí a možnost samostatného a důstojného života.

Nastíním současný stav výzkumu a zamýšlené směry dalšího pokroku na poli kybernetických pomůcek pro sluchově či zrakově postižené a v první řadě pomůcky pro tzv. amputees (termín užívaný především v USA pro lidi po amputaci končetiny).

The following was a speech given by Carly Nyst, Head International Adovacy, at the UN Forum on Business and Human Rights, Geneva on 3 December


The internet and innovations in technologies have opened up previously unimagined possibilities for communication, expression, and empowerment. New technologies have become essential enablers of the enjoyment of human rights, from the right to education, to participation, to access to information. Today, the internet is not only a place where rights are exercised, it is in itself a guarantor of human rights.

At the same time, changes in technologies have given rise to increased opportunities for State interferences with human rights, particularly the rights to privacy and free expression. Even the world’s most longstanding democratic States have obtained the technical capacity to conduct country-wide internet monitoring, tracking and surveillance. Today, as the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression observed in his report presented to the Human Rights Council in June 2013, “the State now has a greater capability to conduct simultaneous, invasive, targeted and broad-scale surveillance than ever before.”

In June 2014, the Supreme Court handed down its decision in Riley v. California, in which the justices unanimously ruled that police officers may not, without a warrant, search the data on a cell phone seized during an arrest. Writing for eight justices, Chief Justice John Roberts declared that “modern cell phones . . . are now such a pervasive and insistent part of daily life that the proverbial visitor from Mars might conclude they were an important feature of human anatomy.”1

 

This may be the first time the Supreme Court has explicitly contemplated the cyborg in case law—admittedly as a kind of metaphor. But the idea that the law will have to accommodate the integration of technology into the human being has actually been kicking around for a while.

Někteří vědci se nespokojí s pouhým teoretizováním, zda určitá technologie bude nalezena, či ne, ale pokoušejí se udávat konkrétní letopočty, kdy k takovému pokroku dojde. Zřejmě nejznámějším a nejpřesnějším prognostikem je již několikrát zmiňovaný Raymond Kurzweil. Proto se také budu při uvádění předpokládaného pokroku držet především tohoto vědce při srovnání s ostatními prognózami.

„Namísto klinických důvodů nastoupí snaha rozšiřovat a překonávat 'normální' lidské schopnosti," uvedl Rodney Brooks, ředitel ústavu umělé inteligence na MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). (Houser, 2004). Myslím, že tento fakt bude pro budoucnost specifický. Během několika let dospěje vývoj kybernetických náhrad, které jsem popsal v první části své práce, do stádia, kdy umožní postiženým plnohodnotný návrat do společnosti.

It’s still only an idea, but Lee sees great commercial promise in this area: “I’ve probably had the most emails from people wanting to get the spinal implant,” he says. “Once you have cyborg sex,” he predicts, “you will never want to return to normal sex.”

I think that is chance for stupid people with spinal problems which have a dream, for which they are able to do everything selfishly.

Assuming that scientific and technological progress continues, human-level machine intelligence is very likely to be developed. And shortly thereafter, superintelligence.

 

Biological brains are unlikely to be the final stage of intelligence. Machines already have superhuman strength, speed and stamina – and one day they will have superhuman intelligence. This is of course not certain to occur – it is possible that we will develop some other dangerous technology first that destroys us, or otherwise fall victim to some existential risk.

 

But assuming that scientific and technological progress continues, human-level machine intelligence is very likely to be developed. And shortly thereafter, superintelligence.

In order to stay human in the current intimate technological revolution, we must become high-tech people with quirky characters. Here are seven theses to nail to the door of our technological church.

 

Today, the most exciting discoveries and technological developments have to do with us, we humans. Technology settles itself rapidly around and within us; collects more and more data about us; and increasingly is able to simulate human appearances and behaviour. As our relationship with technology is becoming more and more intimate, we are becoming techno-people or cyborgs. On the one hand, intimate technology offers opportunities for personal development and more control over our lives. On the other hand, governments, businesses, and other citizens may also deploy intimate technologies in order to influence or even coerce us. To put this development on the public and political agenda, the Rathenau Instituut in the Netherlands has coined the term “intimate-technological revolution,” which is partly driven by smartphones, social media, sensor networks, robotics, virtual worlds, and big data analysis. The idea of intimacy used to pertain to matters of our body and mind that we would share only with people who were close to us. Without privacy we are nothing. Our data should therefore belong to us.
