Samsung is working on a brainwave-reading stroke detector | Future set | Scoop.it

Samsung engineers are undoubtedly interested in EEG. Following their research on brainwave technology to find an alternative way of interaction with mobile devices, now they announced a prototype device, named as the Early Detection Sensor & Algorithm Package (EDSAP), which can warn about impending strokes. The prototype device monitors brainwaves to detect early signs of strokes and alarms a user through a smartphone or tablet app.

We’ve Put a Worm’s Mind in a Lego Robot's Body

We’ve Put a Worm’s Mind in a Lego Robot's Body | Future set | Scoop.it

A wheeled Lego robot may not look like a worm, but it "thinks" like one after programmers gave it the neuron connections in a C. elegans roundworm.

If the brain is a collection of electrical signals, then, if you could catalog all those those signals digitally, you might be able upload your brain into a computer, thus achieving digital immortality.

While the plausibility—and ethics—of this upload for humans can be debated, some people are foraging ahead in the field of whole-brain emulation. There are massive efforts to map the connectome—all the connections in the brain—and to understand how we think. Simulating brains could lead us to better robots and artificial intelligence, but the first steps need to be simple.

IT's insight:

The first two paragraphs are accurate. I have the same opinion

The Age of Virtuous Machines

In the “hard takeoff” scenario, a psychopathic AI suddenly emerges at a superhuman level, achieving universal dominance. Hall suggests an alternative: we’ve gotten better because we’ve become smarter, so AIs will evolve “unselfish genes” and hyperhuman morality. More honest, capable of deeper understanding, and free of our animal heritage and blindnesses, the children of our minds will grow better and wiser than us, and we will have a new friend and guide — if we work hard to earn the privilege of associating with them.

Philosophical Disquisitions: Neuroenhancement and the Extended Mind Hypothesis

Philosophical Disquisitions: Neuroenhancement and the Extended Mind Hypothesis | Future set | Scoop.it

Now consider a question: is this information part of your mind? Does it form part of an extended mind loop, one that interfaces with and augments the mental processors inside your skull? According to some philosophers it does. They believe in something called theextended mind hypothesis, which goes against the neuro-physicalist wisdom and holds that the mind is not necessarily to be identified with the brain. On the contrary, they suggest that humans are natural-born cyborgs, constantly expanding their minds into their external environments.

5 Examples of Insect-Inspired Robotics

5 Examples of Insect-Inspired Robotics | Future set | Scoop.it

Everyone knows that robots are merely lifeless machines, no matter how amazing their abilities may be. However, you may be surprised at how often scientists replicate the features and capabilities of living creatures to increase robotic performance. In fact, there’s even a whole branch of robotics called “biomimetics” dedicated to that single premise. The term biomimetics means literally to “mimic life.” Insects are one form of life from which biomimetic scientists draw significant inspiration for new types of robotic technology.

Functions and behaviors that evolved over hundreds of millions of years in insects can be hard to top. So scientists increasingly looking to Mother Nature and biomimicry for innovative design ideas. The resulting technology is blurring the lines between living beings and machines more than ever.

ICT Implants : The Invasive Future of Identity?

„Namísto klinických důvodů nastoupí snaha rozšiřovat a překonávat 'normální' lidské schopnosti," uvedl Rodney Brooks, ředitel ústavu umělé inteligence na MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). (Houser, 2004).

IT's insight:

Jsem zvědav kdy přijde ten čas.
