Book Review : Thubten Chodron – “Don’t Believe Everything You Think- Living With Wisdom And Compassion “

Book Review : Thubten Chodron – “Don’t Believe Everything You Think- Living With Wisdom And Compassion “ | Buddha, Dhamma & Sangha | Scoop.it

Venerable Thubten Chodron is a notable author, Buddhist monastic and the founder/abbess of Sravasti Abbey, a meditation community in Newport, Washington. She also hosts the Bodhisattva Breakfast Corner channel on YouTube which I highly encourage you to check out as well as her website which is chock full of information. It’s quite remarkable how often I’ve gone down the rabbit hole of Dharma discovery when visiting it.

Her latest book, Don’t Believe Everything You Think: Living with Wisdom and Compassion is a commentary on The Thirty-seven Practices of Bodhisattvas by Togmay Zangpo, a Tibetan monk and Bodhisattva.

Thoughts of Compassion with Thich Nhat Hanh in Thailand

Thoughts of Compassion with Thich Nhat Hanh in Thailand | Buddha, Dhamma & Sangha | Scoop.it

April 8, 2013. 116-minute dharma talk given by Thich Nhat Hanh from Mahachulalungkornrajavidyalaya University in Bangkok, Thailand. The sangha is in the 5-Day Applied Ethics Retreat as part of the spring Asian Tour. The talk is given in English with simultaneous translation into Thai. This is the final talk of the retreat.

How do we apply the dharma into our daily lives? What is Applied Buddhism? In the last five years we have been trying to offer the teachings in non-Buddhist circles through classes in Europe and Hong Kong. We have now started to use the term Applied Ethics. This means translating Buddhism into a secular language. Today we will spend time on the teachings of Applied Ethics.

Equanimity: Going Beyond Right, Left, Red, and Blue

Equanimity: Going Beyond Right, Left, Red, and Blue | Buddha, Dhamma & Sangha | Scoop.it

by Suzanne Harvey (Guest Blogger at An Incrediby Minor Public Figure)

It’s hard to know which was more surprising: that I would run for political office at all—and then win—or that I would become a Buddhist. Politics happened first… or maybe not.

A recent return visit to the New Hampshire State House served to remind me that I’ve put dharma teachings to work in my interactions with individuals whom I find difficult. Putting your practice to work in a political setting should be no different from doing it at any office, but a legislature of 400 members wins hands down as a place to find plenty of challenging personalities.... Extremism Rises Among Myanmar Buddhists Wary of Muslim Minority

Extremism Rises Among Myanmar Buddhists Wary of Muslim Minority | Buddha, Dhamma & Sangha | Scoop.it

:: After a ritual prayer atoning for past sins, Ashin Wirathu, a Buddhist monk with a rock-star following in Myanmar, sat before an overflowing crowd of thousands of followers and launched into a rant against what he called the “enemy" — the country’s Muslim minority. “You can be full of kindness and love, but you cannot sleep next to a mad dog,” Ashin Wirathu said, referring to Muslims. “I call them troublemakers, because they are troublemakers,” Ashin Wirathu told a reporter after his two-hour sermon. “I am proud to be called a radical Buddhist.” ::

wingsie's curator insight, June 27, 2013 4:25 PM

Being a Buddhist majority country, there is a religion conflict between the Buddhists and the Muslims in Myanmar. It is claimed that Burmese Buddhists have killed more than fifteen thousand Muslims in Myanmar. The reason for this conflict is because the Buddhists view the Muslims as a threat to them, by having more children than Buddhists and buying up land that they own. I do not think that this is the right thing to do. As Buddhists, they should follow in Dalai Lama’s footsteps and uphold a higher sense of peacefulness and not practice violence.
