Special glasses (high tech) help surgeons 'see' cancer | Newsroom | BSD Educational Technology | Scoop.it

High-tech glasses developed at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis may help surgeons visualize cancer cells, whichglow blue when viewed through the eyewear.

The wearable technology, so new it’s yet unnamed, was used during surgery for the first time today at Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Centerat Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine.
Cancer cells are notoriously difficult to see, even under high-powered magnification. The glasses are designed to make it easier for surgeons to distinguish cancer cells from healthy cells, helping to ensure that no stray tumor cells are left behind during surgery.

Debating iPads or Chromebooks for 1:1? Why not both? -- THE Journal

Debating iPads or Chromebooks for 1:1? Why not both? -- THE Journal | BSD Educational Technology | Scoop.it
As more school districts consider 1:1 initiatives, they are faced with the decision of which device to roll out. Chromebooks and iPads are two popular choices, but instead of choosing between them, some innovative school districts are deploying both.

Ten Reflections on the First Year of an iPad Pilot

Ten Reflections on the First Year of an iPad Pilot | BSD Educational Technology | Scoop.it

Passing out iPads to students on the first day of school was like celebrating Christmas (or in this case Hanukkah)  with thirty antsy kids sitting around the tree,  attempting to hide their impatience.  Once the iPads had been handed out, students were instantly excited, engaged and enchanted with the new learning device in their hands. At first, everyone was confused about where to find work, where to save and store their products – and which app to use for what purpose. As with every pilot, these issues worked themselves out and soon classes were running pretty smoothly. Once they all learned what a “hard reset” was we were on our way. After an exciting year chalked full of learning lessons and changes in our learning landscape here are my takeaways:'

Lots of very interesting comments, the trends gated by acceptance, and use within the educational community and the " permission" or purchases within the schools.

I am also surprised 15% have no interests in using whiteboards though, not all schools have the chance or "permission" as already mentioned to use it or implement it

Good, but for teachers in New Zealand the curriculum and professional development still needs to be connecged to these resources. Teachers can do this, of course, but wouldn't it be nice if there were some resources available which make those connections?

This is awesome.  So much theory of teaching collides with the practice.  This could be a great way for teachers in the trenches share their experience and get genuine change in education happening.

Denise Weinhoeft-Renfro's comment, July 5, 2013 3:17 PM
This is truly a great tool in my estimation, but theory and reality also collide with technology. If you are not 1:1 then the potential of the app is not getting used in the best way that it can.
Peter Pappas's comment, July 5, 2013 3:22 PM
Good point Denise. I'm hoping it's something school will grow into over time.

Paula Jamieson's curator insight, May 9, 2013 5:23 PM

I have been having 'battery' issues with my iPhone so this post was timely. I use my iphone for personally and professional use almost 24/7 and often the battery is not lasting the day (particularly when I use camera/video/email/social networking/fitness tracking apps all day eg weekends!) I don't personally agree with all of it. In my opinion, by disabling some of this features you are also 'depowering' the device. I do agree with disabling the Location Services feature on 'unnecessary' apps that you don't regularly use. I also agree with disabling  the Notifications function on many apps (I've just done this on the majority of mine so will be interested to see if it makes a difference.). As with any 'tips and tricks' type advice I'd give it a go (as long as it is on a 'surface' level and not delving into the inner workings of the device and also that you have the confidence to 'revert' things if you need to), if it makes a difference for you then it was worth it.
