Grande traversée Sinatra, The Voice of America - France Culture | Bruce Springsteen | Scoop.it

Montclair's Al Mercuro co-directs Roger McGuinn DVD - NorthJersey.com

Montclair's Al Mercuro co-directs Roger McGuinn DVD - NorthJersey.com | Bruce Springsteen | Scoop.it

On the concert DVD included with the two-CD box set "Stories, Songs & Friends," Springsteen says "That riff, I mean, it is THE classic 12 string riff of all time," about the opening guitar riff of The Byrds' 1965 hit "Mr. Tambourine Man."

Listen to "Tell Ole Gil"

Even McGuinn was taken aback: "I was surprised to learn that Bruce Springsteen was even aware of The Byrds' music," stated the rocker in an email to The Montclair Times.

Al Mercuro co-directed the mini documentary/concert DVD with Paul Erickson, whom he has known since attending Verona High School. Mercuro, a Montclair resident, is a board member of Outpost in the Burbs.

The recording of the concert was made for McGuinn's mother Dorothy McGuinn to celebrate her 102nd birthday.

"It was the last one she got to hear, because she passed away at 102 and three days," McGuinn stated. "I felt it was important for her and my kids to hear my story."

When he emailed The Times, McGuinn was touring Europe. as a one-man show. Though the music business has evolved since he entered it in the late '50s, making artists less dependent on record labels, McGuinn's approach to giving a concert is the same, he noted.

'EXTREMELY EASY'

Getting celebrities to rave about McGuinn for the camera was "extremely easy," said Mercuro with a laugh. "Bruce was the first one to jump on. I got a call back without asking, within an hour."

Mercuro had actually produced a Springsteen concert at Montclair State University in 1974. "He was not a big star yet," Mercuro recalled. The band were paid $1,500, and Springsteen said he wouldn't see a dime of it, Mercuro said.

When Springsteen arrived to be filmed in a suite in a New York hotel, Mercuro greeted him with photographs from that show 40 years ago. "He said, 'Do you have more?'" said Mercuro with a smile. The Boss took off his sunglasses, and introduced himself.

In the documentary, McGuinn sings and tells his stories, including how he changed his name from Jim to Roger (a guru suggested a name with an R to vibrate with the universe. The rocker was born James Joseph McGuinn III in 1947 in Chicago. Viewers learn how McGuinn studied banjo at the Old Town School of Folk Music, performed in local coffeehouses, and skipped college to become a professional musician.

Along with Springsteen, Petty and Baez, the documentary includes Judy Collins, Dave Barry, Pete Seeger, footage from McGuinn of The Byrds' 1967 tour of England, and much more.

When Erickson called to ask if he was interested, there was no budget.

"It was my idea to get other people to fill in, and speak on his behalf," Mercuro said. The end result is a short film that is mostly McGuinn telling the story of his fascinating journey from folk to pop stardom to folk, interspersed with celebrity interviews.

The project began in 2009, and was completed this past February.

Some of the final edits on the project were McGuinn's, who is credited as a producer.

Due to the way contracts were written at the time, none of The Byrds received royalties for their greatest hits, only a small advance, long since spent.
