What is lung cancer?

What is lung cancer? | Brooks Composite Bio 20 | Scoop.it
Taylor Schaap's insight:

Interesting facts:

There are two main types of lung cancer:

-Non–small cell lung cancer (NSCSC), this is the most common type of cancer, it grows slower then small cell lung cancer.

-Small cell lung cancer (SCLC), it grows faster and spreads easier.

Did you know that a rare type of cancer called Pleural Mesothelioma is often mistaken for lung cancer. But, in Pleural Mesothelioma this condition of cancer starts in the lining of the lung and is different then lung cancer itself.

Lena's Story: "Smoking caused my lungs to collapse four times before I was diagnosed with Emphysema at 42. Without my oxygen tank, it feels like I'm breathing through a straw. Just breathing is torture."

My story:

Cancer runs on both sides of my family. On my mom's side my Great Grandma, Great Aunt and Grandma have all suffered from breast cancer. In order to ensure I do not trigger my cancer gene to become a cancer cell, I have a healthy diet, with regular exercise and doctor appointments. On my dad's side lung cancer is the main type. While learning about Lung Cancer I have received a better understanding about what has happened on both sides of my family. How to prevent it and also what questions I need to ask.

Taylor Schaap's insight:

Signs/ Symptoms:

There is no main cause for cancer, but some of the most common factors are through genetics, certain environmental or behavioral triggers, and life style choices. The most common is through inheritance. If your family has a cancer history it is best that you know so you can take the proper health precautions as needed. An example of behavioral and environmental triggers that would cause your cells to become more cancerous would be by smoking. If you are a smoker you are breathing in more then 70 chemical including tar into your lungs then oxygen. This causes some blockage to your Bronchioles. How do people know they have cancer?

Some common side effects include:

- extreme exhaustion

- swelling or lumps in certain parts of the body, such as the abdomen or neck

- headaches

- blurred vision

- nausea

- problems with walking or balance

- more infections

- unusual bleeding.

You are the only person who knows what is right and wrong in your body. If you are showing symptoms and you know you have a family history with cancer, go see a doctor or an oncologist who specializes in cancer diagnosis right away. Early diagnosis is easier to treat and your best defense.

Taylor Schaap's insight:

Preventions:

Pay attention to what your body is telling you. The most important thing you can do is get the "unusual" lump checked out. Do not panic though, just because you have a lump on your body it does not mean that you have cancer. It could a swollen lymph-nodes, fatty tissue or an un-cancerous tumor.  In any case get it checked out and do not jump to conclusions. A way to prevent your cancer from getting too serious would be by having a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and go to your doctor for regular check ups, and know your family history.

There are also treatments that can be used to help kill your cancer cells. There are two types of main treatments: Chemotherapy and Radiation also known as Radiotherapy. During Chemotherapy the patient can be given an outpatient basis. Which just states that you go to the hospital, you are then hooked up to an IV and the chemical is injected into your blood stream and "attacks" the cancer cell. Or the patient can take an oral pill, which does the same thing. Some side effects of chemo include:

-nausea

-fatigue

-unusual bleeding

-hair loss

-weight loss

-infections

-mood swings

-high liver enzymes.

Some patients have to take Chemo and Radiation. In radiation a machine feeds your cancer cells high x-ray or high-energy electrons until the cancerous cell decreases in size or disappears completely. Side effects include:

-skin feels fiery

-rashes

-dry skin

-fatigue

Taylor Schaap's insight:

Brief Description:

Lung Cancer is the uncontrolled and invasive growth of abnormal cells in your lungs. It is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths, in both males and females. Abnormal cells multiply and form maligant tumors, also known as carcinomas. These tumors will reduce the surface available for gas exchange and may stop air from entering the Bronchioles. The growing tumors may cause damage towards your lung tissue or produce a toxin that is very harmful to your lung cells. Cancer is the over growth of cells in an uncontrolled way. In a healthy body cell the cells will continue to grow and divide until it eventually dies. While in a cancer cell, it will continue to grow and divide then start to gather, forming tumors. A tumor is a lump that interferes with your normal body processes, sometimes the tumor will break away and move to another tissue or organ, this is the cancer cell spreading. This movement is known as metastasis or secondary cancer.
