We Want Our Daughter to Love the Sciences. Should We Keep Her Away From Princesses? | Educational technology , Erate, Broadband and Connectivity | Scoop.it
When my 4-year-old told me the other day that she was “ready for princesses,” part of me died. Not just because the day had finally arrived when that virulent meme had infected her, but also because of how utterly powerless I was to contain it. Let me be clear: These...

The power of believing that you can improve

The power of believing that you can improve | Educational technology , Erate, Broadband and Connectivity | Scoop.it
Carol Dweck researches “growth mindset” — the idea that we can grow our brain's capacity to learn and to solve problems. In this talk, she describes two ways to think about a problem that’s slightly too hard for you to solve. Are you not smart enough to solve it … or have you just not solved it yet? A great introduction to this influential field.

Windows on Earth | Educational technology , Erate, Broadband and Connectivity | Scoop.it

"Windows on Earth is an educational project that features photographs taken by astronauts on the International Space Station.  Astronauts take hundreds of photos each day, for science research, education and public outreach.  The photos are often dramatic, and help us all appreciate home planet Earth.  These images  help astronauts share their experience, and help you see Earth from a global perspective."

Robots embrace Ubuntu as it invades the internet of things | David Meyer | GigaOM Tech News

Robots embrace Ubuntu as it invades the internet of things | David Meyer | GigaOM Tech News | Educational technology , Erate, Broadband and Connectivity | Scoop.it

Canonical has revealed what I reckon is its biggest announcement in years: Ubuntu is about to invade the internet of things with a minimal version of the Linux distribution that it hopes will provide a standardized platform for connected devices from drones to home hubs.

“Snappy” Ubuntu Core came out of Canonical‘s mobile efforts (which are yet to go anywhere) and was made available on Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and the Google Cloud Platform at the end of 2014. Now it’s available for smart devices, and Canonical has already got players such as the Open Source Robotics Foundation (OSRF), drone outfit Erle Robotics and connected hub maker NinjaBlocks on board.

Unlike traditional, package-based Ubuntu for servers and desktops, the extensible Core keeps apps and each part of the OS securely isolated from one another, and it allows for “transactional updates” — they only need to include the difference between the old and new version, allowing for easy upgrading and rolling-back if needed. In the cloud, Canonical is pushing Ubuntu Core as ideal for Docker and other containerized apps.

The era of ‘sage on the stage’ is dwindling in education. Teachers are no longer required to stand up and start talking in front of a group of students until the bell rings. Convert geographic data to 3-D models for printing

Convert geographic data to 3-D models for printing | Educational technology , Erate, Broadband and Connectivity | Scoop.it
This seems like fun. The NodeJS package shp2stl by Doug McCune lets you convert a shapefile to a 3-D model, which can then send to your favorite 3-D printer (because you know we all have at least two of them lying around). Assuming you have NodeJS setup, simply point the package to your shapefile, specify which attribute to use for height, and presto changeo there's your 3-D model.

35 maps that explain how America is a nation of immigrants

35 maps that explain how America is a nation of immigrants | Educational technology , Erate, Broadband and Connectivity | Scoop.it
Take a tour through America's immigrant heritage — at its most and least welcoming

American politicians, and Americans themselves, love to call themselves "a nation of immigrants": a place where everyone's family has, at some point, chosen to come to seek freedom or a better life. America has managed to maintain that self-image through the forced migration of millions of African slaves, restrictive immigration laws based on fears of "inferior" races, and nativist movements that encouraged immigrants to assimilate or simply leave.

But while the reality of America's immigrant heritage is more complicated than the myth, it's still a fundamental truth of the country's history. It's impossible to understand the country today without knowing who's been kept out, who's been let in, and how they've been treated once they arrive.
