Excellent article about engaging students with technology rather than just doing the same old thing through technology. Electronic worksheets are not the same as project based learning. Hook them into being more curious through technology.

This issue tends to polarize teachers and parents, but I believe we can have both.

Curriculum. ALWAYS.

Factors to consider: 1) how are students using technology @home?, 2) Is SAMR built-in? and 3) connect with other educators/tech profesisonals.

SAMR success is NOT about Tech

"I was thinking today that I had to make it clear that competency with technology is not the first issue you should worry about if you want to make SAMR progress. The issue to tackle first is the teaching conventions and mindsets amongst the staff, and for this you need some pretty simple and effective arguments.

So here are some I’ve used to move staff on a little:"

One of the problems with mass adoption of education models is the way in which the models are 'massaged' to suit purposes other than what they do best. Most models have been developed to describe and categorise behaviours. They're often great for use as the basis for generating discussion. Where they to often fall down is when they become the basis for a curriculum guide into which practice is inserted according to a perceived hierarchy.

So it is with SAMR where writers such as Richard Wells are beginning to question some uses of the model.

Chris Carter's curator insight, February 26, 2014 7:20 PM

Could not agree more. It is about the willingness to embrace a growth mindset.

This post provides a wide range of resources that discuss SAMR, a model that looks at how technology may impact education and transform the classroom as the technology moves from being a direct tool substitute with with no real change to augmentation, where there is some functional improvement to modification providing redesign opportunities to redefinition, moving to new ways to accomplish new tasks. Learn more about SAMR in this post which includes a talk that Dr. Ruben presented at an iPad conference and many other resources that provide additional information about SAMR.

This concept, while discussion for education is the focus, it does have some great implications for business thinking.
