UK brand stitch up as EU ban Made in Britain

UK brand stitch up as EU ban Made in Britain | British Manufacturing | Scoop.it

BRITS reacted with fury last night as Eurocrats unveiled plans to ban “Made in Britain” labels.

EU officials want the tags to show where a product’s most expensive part comes from.

The new laws could see up to 90% of British-made products stripped of the prized label.

Furious Kate Hills, of UK trade body Make It British, said: “This is a slap in the face for UK manufacturing.”

Mulberry handbags will be marketed as “Made in Italy”, where the leather comes from. Savile Row suits would have to make a change because wool comes in from Australia and New Zealand.

Rolls-Royce and Asprey’s jewellery could also be hit.

Companies face hefty fines if they fail to comply.

Simon Rainer, chief executive of the British Jeweller’s Association, said: “The proposals are typical of the EU’s one-size-fits-all approach.

“The penalties may be huge, possibly in the region of 10% of company turnover, for non-compliance.”

The UK and Germany are opposing the plan.

One EU diplomat said: “This proposal offers no benefit for consumers.”
