Building a Purpose Network to Increase Student Engagement and Retention (EDUCAUSE Review) | EDUCAUSE.edu | Bridging the Gap in Higher Ed | Scoop.it
EDUCAUSE Review Online
Corneel Den Hartogh's insight:

"The level of data collection and reporting available on the back end of purpose networks can be overwhelming. One of the blessings and curses with these three programs is that they provide a lot of information."

Learning Analytics isn't easy and not all acquired data is immediately useful. However, it is a blessing as well. Interesting patterns can be extracted and data-driven policy can be implemented. In addition, this project made sure to get student input. Since we want to track and improve their learning, this is key.

How do we engage students in a appropriate way in Learning Analytics? Any Thoughts?

The End Is Not Nigh for Colleges - Commentary - The Chronicle of Higher Education

The End Is Not Nigh for Colleges - Commentary - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Bridging the Gap in Higher Ed | Scoop.it
Doomsayers are predicting that MOOCs, for-profit colleges, or other forces will soon put many colleges out of business. Here's why they're wrong.
Corneel Den Hartogh's insight:

"Framing the debate about the costs of higher education solely in terms of what it costs students to go to college is the wrong way to go about fixing the problem. The debate instead should be framed in terms of value received. How much value do students, as producers and as consumers, receive for the dollars spent?"

Learning theories and e-learning

Learning theories and e-learning | Bridging the Gap in Higher Ed | Scoop.it
It's almost a month since the last post from the first draft of my thesis. So, after much time away here's the next installment. It's probably rougher than previous versions - which says something ...
Corneel Den Hartogh's insight:

Another article from David Jones, this time about learning theories. He identifies 4 which can both be linked to MOOC-types. These are the learning theories connected to the MOOCs, check the article for more information about the theories.

Cognitivism - duplicatiing knowledge, instructor centered --> xMOOC
Constructivism - meaning created by each learner personal --> MOUC (Open University, distance learning ideas)
Connectivism - learning from network --> cMOOC
Behaviourism - learning is black box, hence focus on actual behaviour --> Learning Analytics

What do you think, is David missing learning theories? Are my connections 'correct'?

The missing perspective(s) on MOOCs?

The missing perspective(s) on MOOCs? | Bridging the Gap in Higher Ed | Scoop.it
Yesterday I had the opportunity to listen to Sir John Daniel give a presentation titled "Higher Education Futures: Keeping an open mind". The text and slides from the presentation are available her...
Corneel Den Hartogh's insight:

Excellent, varied article. MOOCs are still in the explorative phase, we do not know how it will work, what the impact will be etc. To get a better understanding of this we need more diverse perspectives. Especially user-input is necessary. If we can listen and adapt to current learners integration in the educational system will be a lot easier. Any students that want to share their perspective?

What MOOCs Will, Won't, and Might Do - Edudemic

What MOOCs Will, Won't, and Might Do - Edudemic | Bridging the Gap in Higher Ed | Scoop.it
Ivy League school officials suggest that one of the biggest impacts of massive online open courses – MOOCs – could be a renewed focus on teaching over research at elite American universities.
Corneel Den Hartogh's insight:

Even at elite universities, academic staff focuses more and more on teaching, thanks to MOOCs! Flipping the lectureroom is now within reach (instead of within red tape as before). The question is not if, but to what extent MOOCs will change HigherEd. What are your thougts?

Corneel Den Hartogh's insight:

From #LAK13, the usage of Learning Analytics to get more insight in student behaviour and the results of that behaviour:

What is the relationship between LMS usage and student academic achievement? How do student characteristics — such as gender, race/ethnicity, family income, and previous academic achievement — affect this relationship?

Stanford's Online Strategy -- Campus Technology

Stanford's Online Strategy -- Campus Technology | Bridging the Gap in Higher Ed | Scoop.it
Stanford is the cradle of the MOOC movement, but the appointment of four high-level administrators to focus on online learning shows that the school now really means business.
Corneel Den Hartogh's insight:

Stanford looks at online learning as means to make campus education more interactive. Only 20-30% of students attends old-school lectures, but all of them are at the optional respond classes. The online platforms are used to provide a framework for experiments with a different pedagogy. While other universities are still seeing MOOCs foremost as PR or 'opening up', Stanford uses it as gateway to change education. In the words of the Vice-provost Online Learning:

"We really don't know where all of this will lead. We're just committed to improving education as much as we can."

About MOOC Completion Rates: The Importance of Student Investment | Bridging the Gap in Higher Ed | Scoop.it

Corneel Den Hartogh's insight:

MOOCs completion rates are really low since sign-up and failure costs are really low... This author suggests asking small fees to sign-up, to increase rates, but doesn't go against the whole idea of a MOOC?
