MACARTHUR Anglican School has welcomed the federal government's push to make Asian languages a priority in schools.

Students from MTsN 3 Jakarta and Macarthur Anglican School (Sydney) have engaged in a number of collaborative learning activities and cultural exchanges culminating with a visit by MTsN 3 educators and students in 2012. A reciprocal visit by Macarthur students and staff is planned for 2013.

The relationship between Leongatha Primary School in Victoria and Pondok Labu 11 Primary School in Indonesia is one of the 60 school partnerships between Australia and Indonesia formed under the BRIDGE program of Melbourne University's Asia Education Foundation since it started in 2008. Its success led to it being featured in the Australian Government's recent white paper, Australia in the Asian Century, as an example of innovative learning practices to connect with Asia.

Students from Karangmojo #1 State Junior High, Yogyakarta (SMPN 1 Karangmojo) taught visitors to ICT Week at Federation Square, Melbourne, how to do the Indonesian poco-poco dance on September 7th! School excursion all the way from Indonesia to Australia, right? Wrong. Indonesian students taught the dance to peers from Heathmont College, Victoria, via video conferencing using Skype.

CULTURAL exchanges just got better at Glenwood HS thanks to the input by two visiting Indonesian teachers.

Indonesian teachers, Imam Payitno and Viddya Nora Willova, spend two weeks in homestay and attending class with Australian teachers at their partner school Glenwood High as part of the BRIDGE professional learning program. Principal: "I think it is really important for the students to be globally aware of their neighbours, specially in Asia... It will also help them develop an understanding of languages and cultures."

Illawarra Sports High has been named an Access Asia School by the Federal Government and Year 8 students have been learning the Indonesian national language, Bahasa, since the beginning of the year.

The school is part of the  Building Relationships Through Intercultural Dialogue and Growing Engagement (BRIDGE) project this year. It recently hosted two Indonesian teachers from its sister school in central Java.

For one school in particular, ‘the BRIDGE project was an ideal opportunity to involve the school with Indonesia. We wanted to go beyond the walls of the school, beyond our area, and indeed beyond Australia.’Irene Beasley is the only teacher of Indonesian at Leongatha Primary School in Gippsland, in the heart of Victorian dairying country. Leongatha Primary is partnered with SD Pondok Labu 11, a school in the bustling 10 million‑strong metropolis of Jakarta. The two schools connect classes through Skype. This enables the children to have authentic, real‑time, face‑to‑face conversations. ‘We try to speak Indonesian at our end and they speak English,’ Irene said. The students investigate and use a range of Web 2.0 technologies to exchange their ideas, interests and information about their country and culture. These exchanges have led to regular teacher exchanges, and in 2012, to the first student exchanges.

Mount Tarcoola Primary School and partner school SD Negeri 4 Wates put pen to paper to cement their dedication to each other and the Australia-Indonesia BRIDGE School Partnerships Project.

The two schools signed a Memorandum of Agreement, signalling a strengthening of their relationship. The visit to Wates was a reciprocal visit, following the visit to Geraldton by SD Negeri 4 Wates teachers Ibu Arni and Ibu Sutarjilah in March this year.

Geraldton was the only regional city in Australia to host a professional development day for teachers involved in the Australia-Indonesia BRIDGE Partnerships Project.

In late May 2012, Kormilda College in the Northern Territory hosted a second visit from its BRIDGE Partner school, SMA Negeri 15 Surabaya. 

 

"I have really enjoyed this whole experience. It really is an eye-opener about how different their lives in Indonesia are compared to ours in Darwin. I have never been to Indonesia before but I would love to one day. All I ever hear about is Bali, but this experience has made me realise that there is more to Indonesia than JUST Bali and someday my family and I will go to Surabaya."

Schools are using video conferencing to enhance learners' ability to use foreign languages.

At Macarthur Anglican School, in Cobbitty, south-west of Sydney, the year 9 Indonesian class started twice-weekly Skype sessions with a madrasah in South Jakarta last year.

Students originally spoke to each other over laptops in groups of three but now converse one-on-one in front of the entire class.
