donhornsby's curator insight, May 28, 2014 9:19 AM

(From the article): Take a noise retreat. Even if you can’t cut down on the noise in your daily life, you can find periods of respite. For me, that’s still escaping to my uncle’s farm, to the beach, or to the North Georgia mountains. For others, it’s taking advantage of “silent retreats,” where participants go to actively avoid speaking or experiencing other man-made sounds. Ecologist Gordon Hempton has found only 12 spots in the U.S. free of human-made noise for intervals of 15 minutes or more, but there are a number of resorts that promise as much escape from noise as possible without a long hike into the Alaskan wilderness.

It’s ironic that, as more of our tasks become mental, our environments make the concentration so necessary for intellectual labor more difficult. The noise permeating our environments can impact our health, concentration, and happiness. As silence becomes rarer and more valuable, we’d be wise to seek it out.

What do you mean, you don't have time? Time is a matter of priorities...

Ellen Naylor's curator insight, May 28, 2014 1:06 PM

I love the idea of taking a noise retreat when I go into the city. Were I working in a large office in the common cube environment, I would be taking noise breaks. Regardless, I like taking mindfulness breaks during the day. They help me get back on task if I have wondered.

You get all kinds of happiness advice on the internet from people who don't know what they're talking about. Don't trust them.

Actually, don't trust me either. Trust neuroscientists. They study that gray blob in your head all day and have learned a lot about what truly will make you happy.

UCLA neuroscience researcher Alex Korb has some insights that can create an upward spiral of happiness in your life.

Social media can be a challenge in more ways than one for many business owners. Conflicting advice abounds and time pressures makes following any advice difficult for those with limited social media experience. Having a structured approach to getting any business a reasonable level of social media exposure is a key element to success in this arena. Following the approach outlined in this article, will deliver far more, than most hit or miss attempts to gain social media traction.

Kenneth Mikkelsen's curator insight, November 30, 2015 11:31 PM

We all know what it feels like to have a “lightbulb” moment – that lightning-quick strike of momentary inspiration that plants the seed of genius and sends us racing to the whiteboard. But the feeling of sustained inspiration – a lifelong link to a particular point of reference that moors us, guides us, reminds us of what we might aspire to and what we can achieve – is something much deeper, and much greater.

As it turns out, inspiration has many faces. It spans many centuries. It covers all walks of life, and lives big and small.
