With poor access to clean water, giving up breastfeeding is a serious health risk in this part of the world - but milk formula companies continue to sign up midwives
LISA Infant Milk & Nutrition's insight:

"Fifi, who is 20, started feeding Riska formula, rather than breastfeeding her, when her daughter was two months old; she was on contraceptives, and thought it was interfering with her milk supply. The midwife agreed, and gave her a free sample of formula milk. Now she spends 400,000 rupiah (about £26) a month on formula, which is half of her husband's monthly salary."

‘Label formula milk like cigarettes’ - a long lasting debate

‘Label formula milk like cigarettes’ - a long lasting debate | Breastfeeding Promotion & Scandals | Scoop.it

London - Formula milk should carry much larger “cigarette-style” warnings that breast is best, a leading charity says. A report, Superfood for Babies, released recently by Save the Children, says the lives of 95 babies could be saved every hour worldwide – 830,000 a year – if new mothers breastfed immediately after giving birth.

LISA Infant Milk & Nutrition's insight:

Clare Byam-Cook, former nurse, midwife and breast feeding counsellor, said the report was “emotive” and ignored the fact that feeding babies in the UK was different to the Third World.

“The saving of 95 babies applies to developing countries, not Britain,” she added. “I’m concerned that cigarette-style warnings will increase the guilt felt by moms who need or want to use formula feed - when all women are aware that breastfeeding is good for the baby and the mother. These mothers already feel a failure because they have to use formula feed and then they are treated like bad people when buying it.”
